having first served for Rachel and, against his will, having been joined to Leah, he had Levi as his third son from her, clearly within three years. So one must believe neither Africanus, who says that Levi was born in the 87th year of Jacob, nor Eusebius, who says in the 86th year. For according to both, Joseph will be found to have been born either in the 96th or the 95th year of Jacob's life; which is inconsistent with the divine scripture, which presents him as beginning to rule Egypt at 30 years of age and after ten years—I mean seven of plenty and three of famine—receiving his father Israel with his whole household at 130 years old, he being forty years old, clearly. Therefore from these things the birth of each is accurately established, and so it will be systematized by us, having also other later ecclesiastical historians who agree, but not, however, with the foregoing reasoning and precise proof. In his 91st year, Jacob begot Joseph, the last of all the children born to him in Mesopotamia, but the first from Rachel. And Joseph, after his father's return to the land of Canaan, was sold as a slave out of his brothers' envy and was brought down to Egypt in the 107th year of Jacob, being 17 years old himself; and after 13 years, being 30 years old, the rule of Egypt is entrusted to him under Apophis Pharaoh, king of Egypt, according to the dynasty, in the 120th year of his father. And after 10 years, the seventh of the plenty and the third of the famine, Jacob went down into Egypt, in the 40th year of Joseph, being in his 130th year, and he lived on in Egypt for 17 years, as the divine scripture of Genesis testifies. And so Joseph was, according to the consequent enumeration, 57 years old at the time of Jacob's death. And when his father had died in the 147th year of his life, which was the cosmic year 3619, Joseph himself lived on for a remaining 53 years. The years of Joseph's life become 110 in total, and of the world, 3672. Sacred Genesis, then, records events up to his death, nowhere outlining for us the times of Levi, in which he begot Kohath, or those of Kohath, in which he begot Amram, or Amram, Moses. 135 The enumeration of the 430 years of Israel's sojourn in the land of Canaan and in Egypt, according to God's prophecy to Abraham, is numbered by all the interpreters and historians from the 5th and 70th year; and from this same 75th year of Abraham until the death of Joseph and of the book of Genesis is the 6th year of this same sojourn, as follows: from the 75th year of Abraham until the birth of Isaac, 25 years. Isaac begot Jacob in his 60th year. Jacob, at 130 years of age, moved to Joseph in Egypt, in the tenth year of his rule and the 40th of his life. And Joseph lived after the 130th year of Israel, that is, the 40th of his own life, 70 years. So in the 130th year of Jacob it was the 215th year of the divine prophecy and of the sojourn in the land of Canaan, as all agree with the scripture, and of the world, 3600. And Joseph lived on for 70 years of the sojourn in Egypt. And there remain for the completion of the 430 years, from the 110th year of Joseph until the exodus and freedom of the sons of Israel, which happened in the 80th year of Moses, a remaining 145 years. These things being agreed, we have the 80 years of Moses, but the remaining 65 years from the death of Joseph and of the book of Genesis until the first year of Moses are passed over in silence by the scripture, being recorded nowhere, but only from the subtraction just mentioned of the 430 years of the sojourn are they manifest to us, that there are 65 years from the death of Joseph to the birth of Moses, which years it is impossible to trace genealogically from Joseph down to Moses because Moses himself is descended from another tribe, that of Levi. There is therefore every necessity, having set forth here the things clearly stated in the scripture and agreed to by all, to run back to another starting point. The first year of Levi, and this was, as has been shown a little before, in the 82nd year of Jacob, and this same year again was the 167th year of the sojourn in the land of Canaan, as follows: Abraham from his 75th year, for 125 years. Isaac until the first of Jacob, 60. Jacob until the first year of Levi, 82. In total, 167. remaining 136 of the 430 of the sojourn, 263. which, though testified to by the scripture
