A terrible earthquake in Constantinople on the 25th of the month of September, in the 1st indiction, and many churches, 126 houses, and porticoes fell to the ground, and innumerable multitudes of people were buried; and the sphere of the statue of the Forum fell, and the column of Theodosius the Great, the one on the column of Taurus, and the inner walls for a considerable distance; and the earthquake lasted a long time, so that the city stank. And Stephen, having been put forward in Antioch by common vote by those of the same mind as Peter the Fuller, was accused to Zeno as a Nestorian. But an eastern synod, having convened in Laodicea by order of the emperor, restored him to the throne as blameless. In the same year Theuderic, son of Triarius, also called Strabo, nephew of the wife of Aspar, who was killed by Leo, rose up against Zeno with a multitude of barbarians, having been allied with Basiliscus and made a general by him. And after the return of Zeno, going out from there into Thrace he revolted, and having plundered all the areas around Byzantium up to the mouth of the Pontus, then also, being about to be betrayed by his own men, perceiving the ambush and returning, he kills those who were plotting this. And he himself dies, suddenly falling on a spear standing in front of his tent while mounting his horse. Year of the world 5971. Year of the divine incarnation 471. Zeno, emperor of the Romans, for 17 years. 5th year. Valas, king of the Persians, for 4 years. 3rd year. Simplicius, bishop of Rome, for 14 years. 10th year. Acacius, bishop of Constantinople, for 17 years. 8th year. Anastasius, bishop of Jerusalem, for 18 years. 3rd year. Timothy, bishop of Alexandria, for 4 years. 2nd year. Stephen, bishop of Antioch, for 3 years. 2nd year. In this year Marcian, the son of Anthemis who had reigned in Rome, and the husband of Leontia, daughter of Verina and sister of the empress Ariadne, rises up in Byzantium against the emperor Zeno, on the grounds that his wife Leontia was born after Leo's reign; for Ariadne was born before he became emperor. And when a mighty war broke out between Zeno and Marcian, Marcian wins decisively, driving all 127 of Zeno's men into the palace guard, with his brothers Romulus and Procopius fighting alongside him, and he almost seized the palace. But having made light of his accomplishments and turning to dinners and sleep, and having many of his allies taken from him during the night by Illus the magister, who persuaded them with gifts, he was so diminished in the battle on the next day, that he fled for refuge to the oratory of the Apostles and was ordained a presbyter by Acacius at the command of Zeno; and he is exiled to the castle of Papyrion in Cappadocia. And Procopius and Romulus, his brothers, while bathing at night in the Zeuxippus, were captured by Illus, and they, having escaped, reached Rome. 6. 4. 11. 9. 4. 3. 3. In this year, Illus the magister advised the emperor Zeno to expel Verina, his mother-in-law, from the city. And by some trick he sent her to Chalcedon, and a little later he dispatched her to the castle of Papyrion to live with Marcian and her own daughter Leontia. And she wrote to her own daughter Ariadne, begging to be recalled from exile; and the empress implored Zeno. And he said to her: "Ask the patrician Illus about her." And she, having summoned him, asked him with tears. But he was not persuaded, saying: "You seek to make another emperor against your husband." Then Ariadne, becoming angry, said to the emperor, "Either Illus is to be in the palace, or I am;" and the emperor said to her, "I want you. If you can do anything to him, do it." And she arranged for him to be murdered, and orders Urbicius the cubicularius to urge someone to kill Illus. And as he was going up the spiral staircase of the hippodrome, a guardsman named Spanicius, having been instructed, against his head
