he says, which was last added as a mourning. For having accused them of making an idol and being occupied with the worship of Plouton, after the destruction of Sennacherib; Therefore, to this little idol, he says, you made burnt offerings to Plouton, as if you would be stronger than death. And that he is speaking about this, the following reveals. For he says: *Therefore, behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, 64.925 and this place will not be called fall, and polyandrion of the son of Ennom. But the Hebrew has it thus: The fall of Topheth, which is, Altar of the maiden. But they interpreted it "son of Ennom," from the place being of Ennom; but the meaning is clearer in the Hebrew, reproving their impiety. But the polyandrion of the slaughter, that is, the valley of slaughter; for so the Hebrew has it. It should be noted here also, that the interpreters translated it "polyandrion" from the multitude of those slain. But that he is now discoursing about Topheth, which he interpreted as son of Ennom, he reveals as he proceeds. For having said that he broke the flask according to the command of God, he adds: Thus says the Lord. So that its wound might be incurable, I gave you hope of salvation; I said: I will turn back the nation, and the captivity, and the kingdom—you did not heed. I take away also this consolation, I cut off also these hopes. *And the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the kings of Judah, shall be as the place that is falling to ruin. That is, where the Barbarians once fell when they attacked the city. All the houses of the kings of Judah as a place of Topheth because of the impurities which they committed in all the houses. They offered incense on their rooftops to all the host of heaven. That is, so now also all Judah will fall to ruin, and the houses of the kings on account of the place of Tapheth, that is, the altar of Plouton, just as those who attacked the city fell. And proceeding he says: *And in Tapheth they will bury, for lack of a place to bury. Therefore, since they hold the place in high regard, and worshipping it as a god, they brought nothing unclean into it, he threatens them to fill the place with corpses.
CHAP. 20.
And Pashur heard. See how great a crime, and he was a priest, and against a priest, and a prophet, and one speaking such things. The one who ought to have mourned, was learning—perhaps he was learning through both words and deeds their wickedness, so that he might not marvel at the captivity. And Pashur struck Jeremiah the prophet, and cast him into the cataract, that is, into the prison. Which was in the gate of Benjamin of the appointed house, of the upper room, which was in the house of the Lord. Of the appointed house, that is, of the guard; and he called it cataract from its shape; and of the upper room, because it was in the court, so as to say, in the open air; but the phrase, "which was in the house of the Lord," speaks of Pashur, instead of, "The priest who served in the house, this man handed him over to the prison." And Jeremiah said to him. How was this man not afraid to say these things? And how 64.928 did that one cast him out? for even if they hated the men—perhaps the man—, yet they could not show their wickedness further, as their conscience convicted them. So also Herod with John; for he loved him, only so far as not to hear the things being said. *The Lord has not called your name Pashur, but a sojourner round about. The Hebrew, he said, has "parable" instead of "sojourner." And the "round about," instead of, "to all the nations." But the prophecy against this man came to pass in the time of Jehoiakim and Jeconiah. You have deceived me, O Lord, and I was deceived. Perhaps to many this prophet seems to speak boldly; but now he says that God deceives, and to trifle with
