τοῦ σίγματος, καὶ τῶν δήμων ἐξαιτουμένων κατὰ τὸ σύνηθες ἀχθῆναι ἱππικὸν ἱπποδρόμιον, κελεύσει τοῦ βασιλέως δίδοται τὸ βηλάριον
καὶ κρεμμᾶται, καὶ τῇ ἑξῆς ἡμέρᾳ τελεῖται ἱππικὸς ἀγών. ἰστέον, ὅτι τῇ αὐτῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῆς ἱπποδρομίας δίδοται μανδάτα, συναθροισθῆναι
πάντας ἐν τῷ ἱπποδρόμῳ, καὶ κελεύσει τοῦ βασιλέως ἐξερχόμενος ὁ πραιπόσιτος ἐκλέγεται ἀπὸ μὲν τῶν ταγμάτων νʹ, ἀπὸ δὲ τῶν
δύο μερῶν τῶν δημωτῶν ἀνὰ νʹ καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν πολιτῶν νʹ, καὶ τούτων ἱσταμένων ἔνθεν κἀκεῖθεν, λέγει πρὸς αὐτοὺς ὁ πραιπόσιτος,
ὅτι "κελεύει ὁ βασιλεὺς ἡμῶν ὁ ἅγιος, ἵνα κατὰ τὸν κρατήσαντα παλαιὸν τύπον καὶ τὴν ἀρχαίαν συνήθειαν ἀθροισθῆτε τῇ ἕωθεν,
(ἤγουν τῇ πέμπτῃ ἡμέρᾳ τῆς τοῦ παιδὸς γεννήσεως,) καὶ ἐκφωνήσητε τόδε ὄνομα τῷ τεχθέντι πορφυρογεννήτῳ." τῇ δὲ ἕωθεν, ἤγουν
τῇ εʹ ἡμέρᾳ, συναθροίζονται ἐν τῷ αὐτῷ ἱπποδρόμῳ, καὶ λέγουσιν οἱ τῶν δήμων ἄκτα, καὶ εὐφημοῦσιν τοὺς δεσπότας καὶ τὰς αὐγούστας
καὶ τὸ τεχθὲν πορφυρογέννητον ἐξ ὀνόματος. ἰ 618 στέον, ὅτι τῇ ὀγδόῃ ἡμέρᾳ καλλωπίζεται ὁ τῆς αὐγούστης κοιτὼν μετὰ τῶν χρυσοϋφάντων
βήλων τοῦ χρυσοτρικλίνου καὶ πολυκανδήλων. καὶ μετὰ τὸ γενέσθαι παρὰ τοῦ ἱερέως τὴν εὐχὴν ἐν τῷ προπυλαίῳ τῆς ἐκκλησίας καὶ
ἐπιτεθῆναι τὸ παρὰ τῶν δήμων ἐκφωνηθὲν ὄνομα αὐτῷ καὶ τὸ ἱμάτιον ἐνδυθῆναι πάλιν ἀποφέρεται τὸ παιδίον, καὶ τίθεται εἰς
