happening will be brought in with it, that is, this one of ours, and a better legislation. Which indeed Paul, establishing, said, For when the priesthood is changed, of necessity a change of the law also takes place, and of these there is one creator. For since the greater part of the legal ordinances was expended on the succession of the priesthood, and the former priesthood was cast out, it is clear that when another was introduced in its place, a greater legislation also had to be introduced in its place. Then showing of whom these things are said, For He of whom these things are said, he says, partook of another tribe, from which no one has attended to the altar. For it is very clear 48.925 that our Lord has sprung from Judah, to which tribe Moses said nothing concerning priesthood. When, therefore, Christ appears to be of that tribe, that is, of Judah, and a priest according to the order of Melchizedek, and Melchizedek being much more venerable than Abraham; it is universally acknowledged that another priesthood is introduced in place of the other, one much higher than the former. For if the type was such, and was more splendid than the Jewish priesthood, much more so is the truth itself; which therefore he said when establishing it: It is yet more abundantly evident, if another priest arises according to the likeness of Melchizedek, who was not according to the law of a carnal commandment, but according to the power of an endless life. What is, Not according to the law of a carnal commandment, but according to the power of an endless life? That none of his ordinances were carnal. For he did not command to sacrifice sheep and calves, but to serve God through virtue of the soul; and for these he has appointed for us as rewards a life that is never destroyed. And again, when we were deadened by sins, he came and raised us up, and made us alive, having loosed a twofold death, that of sin, and that of the flesh. Since, therefore, he came bringing such good things to us, for this reason he says: Not according to the law of a carnal commandment, but according to the power of an endless life. 5. Already then this also has been jointly demonstrated, that the priesthood having been changed, it was likely that a change of the law would also of necessity take place. But nevertheless it was possible to demonstrate this very thing explicitly, and to bring forward the prophets again as witnesses, saying that the law will also be changed, and the polity will be transformed for the better, and that no Jewish king will ever again arise. But since one should say only as much as the hearer is able to receive, and not all things at once, nor all together, having reserved those things for another time, for now we will end the discourse here, having exhorted your love to remember what has been said, and to connect these things with what was said before; and what we asked before, this we will ask now also, to rescue your brothers, and to take much care for the neglected members. For we undertake such labor for this reason, not that we might simply speak, nor that we might enjoy applause and clamor, but that we might bring back to the way of truth those who have been broken off. And let no one say to me, I have nothing in common with that person, may it be for me to set my own affairs straight. No one can set his own affairs straight without love for and salvation of his neighbor. For this reason Paul also says, Let no one seek his own, but each one that of another, knowing that his own interest lies in that of his neighbor. You are healthy, but your brother is sick. If, therefore, you are wise, you will grieve more for the one who is weary, and in this too you will imitate that blessed one, who says: Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is made to stumble, and I do not burn? For if when we contribute two obols, and spend a little 48.926 silver on the poor, we rejoice; if we are able to save souls, what great pleasure shall we reap? and what great a reward shall we enjoy in the age to come? For even here, as often as we meet, we shall receive much joy from the encounter, remembering their achievements, and seeing them there at the fearful judgment seat, we shall have great confidence.

συμβαίνουσα συνεισαχθήσεται, αὕτη ἡ ἡμετέρα δηλονότι, καὶ νομοθεσία βελτίων. Ὅπερ δὴ κατασκευάζων ὁ Παῦλος ἔλεγε, Μετατιθεμένης γὰρ τῆς ἱερωσύνης, ἐξ ἀνάγκης καὶ νόμου μετάθεσις γίνεται, καὶ τούτων δημιουργὸς εἷς ἐστιν. Ἐπειδὴ γὰρ τὸ πλέον τῶν νομίμων περὶ τὴν τῆς ἱερωσύνης ἀκολουθίαν ἀνηλίσκετο, ἡ δὲ ἱερωσύνη ἡ προτέρα ἐξεβέβλητο, εὔδηλον ὅτι ἑτέρας ἀντεισαχθείσης, καὶ νομοθεσίαν μείζονα ἀντεισαχθῆναι ἔδει. Εἶτα δηλῶν, περὶ τίνος ταῦτα λέγεται, Ἐφ' ὃν γὰρ λέγεται ταῦτα, φησὶ, φυλῆς ἑτέρας μετέσχηκεν, ἀφ' ἧς οὐδεὶς προσέσχηκε τῷ θυσιαστηρίῳ. Πρόδηλον 48.925 γὰρ, ὅτι ἐξ Ἰούδα ἀνατέταλκεν ὁ Κύριος ἡμῶν, εἰς ἣν φυλὴν οὐδὲν περὶ ἱερωσύνης Μωσῆς ἐλάλησεν. Ὅταν οὖν φαίνηται ὁ Χριστὸς ἐξ ἐκείνης ὢν τῆς φυλῆς, δηλονότι τῆς Ἰούδα, καὶ ἱερεὺς κατὰ τὴν τάξιν Μελχισεδὲκ, ὁ δὲ Μελχισεδὲκ πολὺ τοῦ Ἀβραὰμ σεμνότερος ὤν· πανταχόθεν συνωμολόγηται, ὅτι καὶ ἑτέρα ἀνθ' ἑτέρας εἰσάγεται ἱερωσύνη πολὺ τῆς προτέρας ὑψηλοτέρα. Εἰ γὰρ ὁ τύπος τοιοῦτος, καὶ τῆς ἱερωσύνης τῆς Ἰουδαϊκῆς λαμπρότερος ἦν, πολλῷ μᾶλλον αὐτὴ ἡ ἀλήθεια· ὅπερ οὖν κατασκευάζων ἔλεγε· Περισσότερον ἔτι κατάδηλόν ἐστιν, εἰ κατὰ τὴν ὁμοιότητα Μελχισεδὲκ ἀνίσταται ἱερεὺς ἕτερος, ὃς οὐ κατὰ νόμον ἐντολῆς σαρκικῆς, ἀλλὰ κατὰ δύναμιν ζωῆς ἀκαταλύτου. Τί ἐστιν, Οὐ κατὰ νόμον ἐντολῆς σαρκικῆς, ἀλλὰ κατὰ δύναμιν ζωῆς ἀκαταλύτου; Ὅτι τῶν προσταγμάτων αὐτοῦ οὐδὲν ἦν σαρκικόν. Οὐ γὰρ πρόβατα θύειν καὶ μόσχους ἐπέταξεν, ἀλλὰ διὰ τῆς κατὰ ψυχὴν ἀρετῆς τὸν Θεὸν θεραπεύειν· καὶ τούτων τὰ ἔπαθλα ζωὴν ἡμῖν ἔθηκε τὴν οὐδέποτε καταλυομένην. Καὶ πάλιν νεκρωθέντας ἡμᾶς ὑπὸ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ἐλθὼν ἀνέστησε, καὶ ἐζωοποίησε, διπλοῦν θάνατον λύσας, τὸν μὲν τῆς ἁμαρτίας, τὸν δὲ τῆς σαρκός. Ἐπεὶ οὖν τοιαῦτα κομίζων ἡμῖν ἦλθεν ἀγαθὰ, διὰ τοῦτό φησιν· Οὐ κατὰ νόμον ἐντολῆς σαρκικῆς, ἀλλὰ κατὰ δύναμιν ζωῆς ἀκαταλύτου. εʹ. Ἤδη μὲν οὖν καὶ τοῦτο λοιπὸν συναποδέδεικται, ὅτι τῆς ἱερωσύνης μετατεθείσης, καὶ νόμου μετάθεσιν ἐξ ἀνάγκης εἰκὸς ἦν γενέσθαι. Ἀλλ' ὅμως καὶ τοῦτο αὐτὸ ῥητῶς ἐνῆν ἀποδεῖξαι, καὶ τοὺς προφήτας πάλιν παραγαγεῖν μάρτυρας λέγοντας, ὅτι καὶ ὁ νόμος μετατεθήσεται, καὶ ἡ πολιτεία ἐπὶ τὸ βέλτιον μετασχηματισθήσεται, καὶ ὅτι βασιλεὺς οὐδεὶς οὐδέποτε λοιπὸν ἀναστήσεται Ἰουδαῖος. Ἐπειδὴ δὲ τοσαῦτα χρὴ λέγειν ὅσα δυνατὸν ὑποδέχεσθαι τὸν ἀκροατὴν, καὶ μὴ πάντα ὑφ' ἓν, μηδὲ ἀθρόως, εἰς ἕτερον ἐκεῖνα ταμιευσάμενοι καιρὸν, τέως ἐνταῦθα καταλύσομεν τὸν λόγον, παρακαλέσαντες ὑμῶν τὴν ἀγάπην, μεμνῆσθαι τῶν εἰρημένων, καὶ τοῖς ἔμπροσθεν λεχθεῖσι ταῦτα συνάψαι· καὶ ὃ πρότερον ἐδεόμεθα, τοῦτο δεησόμεθα καὶ νῦν, τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς ἀνασώσασθαι τοὺς ὑμετέρους, καὶ πολλὴν ὑπὲρ τῶν ἠμελημένων μελῶν ποιήσασθαι πρόνοιαν. ∆ιὰ γὰρ τοῦτο τοιοῦτον ἡμεῖς ἀναδεχόμεθα πόνον, οὐχ ἵνα ἁπλῶς εἴπωμεν, οὐδ' ἵνα κρότων καὶ θορύβων ἀπολαύσωμεν, ἀλλ' ἵνα ἐπαναγάγωμεν πρὸς τὴν τῆς ἀληθείας ὁδὸν τοὺς ἀποῤῥαγέντας. Καὶ μή μοι λεγέτω τις, ὅτι Κοινὸν οὐδὲν ἔχω πρὸς ἐκεῖνον, γένοιτό μοι τὰ ἐμαυτοῦ κατορθῶσαι πράγματα. Οὐδεὶς τὸ ἑαυτοῦ κατορθῶσαι δύναται χωρὶς τῆς τοῦ πλησίον ἀγάπης καὶ σωτηρίας. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο καὶ ὁ Παῦλός φησι, Μηδεὶς τὸ ἑαυτοῦ ζητείτω, ἀλλὰ τὸ τοῦ ἑτέρου ἕκαστος, εἰδὼς, ὅτι τὸ ἑαυτοῦ ἐν τῷ τοῦ πλησίον κεῖται συμφέροντι. Ὑγιαίνεις σὺ, ἀλλ' ὁ ἀδελφός σου ἀσθενεῖ. Ἂν τοίνυν εὖ φρονῇς, περὶ τοῦ κάμνοντος μειζόνως ἀλγήσεις, καὶ μιμήσῃ καὶ ἐν τούτῳ τὸν μακάριον ἐκεῖνον, τὸν λέγοντα· Τίς ἀσθενεῖ, καὶ οὐκ ἀσθενῶ; τίς σκανδαλίζεται, καὶ οὐκ ἐγὼ πυροῦμαι; Εἰ γὰρ δύο καταβάλλοντες ὀβολοὺς, καὶ δαπανῶντες ὀλίγον 48.926 ἀργύριον εἰς πένητας, χαίρομεν· ἂν ψυχὰς σῶσαι δυνηθῶμεν, πόσην μὲν καρπωσόμεθα ἡδονήν; πόσης δὲ κατὰ τὸν αἰῶνα τὸν μέλλοντα ἀπολαύσομεν τῆς ἀμοιβῆς; Καὶ γὰρ καὶ ἐνταῦθα, ὁσάκις ἂν συντύχωμεν, πολλὴν δεξόμεθα τὴν εὐφροσύνην ἀπὸ τῆς συντυχίας, τῶν κατορθωμάτων ἀναμιμνησκόμενοι τῶν κατ' αὐτοὺς, καὶ ἐπὶ τοῦ βήματος αὐτοὺς ἐκεῖ θεασάμενοι τοῦ φοβεροῦ, μεγάλης μεθέξομεν τῆς παῤῥησίας.
