while he was besieging, we did not obtain this small and humble favor. Glory to God also for this. For we do not cease glorifying him for all things. May his name be blessed forever. But I was very surprised at you, that although I have sent this fourth or even fifth letter to your affection and modesty, I have received only one. And yet this was not a matter of difficulty, to write more frequently. And I say these things not to blame you; for what pertains to love is not of necessity, but of choice. But I am greatly pained, that you have suddenly cast us out of your mind, having sent us one letter in so long a time. If, therefore, we ask for nothing burdensome nor offensive, provide this for us, of which you are the mistress, and which rests with you. For regarding other things we do not trouble you, lest in addition to accomplishing nothing we might also seem to be burdensome and offensive to you. 121. To Arabius. The furnace of despondency, which you carry in your soul over what has happened to us, your letter has shown to us most clearly, though we knew it even before this. For we will not be able to forget the fount of tears which you shed at the beginning when these evils were being woven. Nevertheless, the letter has revealed to us the flame of grief in your heart no less than those tears and lamentations. Expect the rewards for these things from the man-loving God. For there is also a reward for grief, and a great and plentiful one. Since also in the case of the evils of the Jews there were some who were not able to correct what was being done by them, but only groaned and lamented, and they reaped such a reward that, when all the others were perishing and being delivered to utter destruction, they escaped the wrath. For, he says, Set the mark upon the foreheads of those who sigh and cry. And yet they did not prevent the things that were happening, but because they did what was in their power, they groaned, they lamented the things that were happening, and from this they acquired the greatest security. Therefore, do not cease, my lords, groaning over these things and entreating the man-loving God to grant a release to the common shipwreck of the world. For you know, you know clearly, that all things are filled with tumult and confusion, and one must not pray for Constantinople alone, but for the whole world; since the evil, having begun from here, like a wicked stream poured out, is ravaging the Churches everywhere on earth. But what you have asked of us, be you also asked of this by us, as long as we are separated from you in the body—for in soul we are always bound both to your nobility and to your house—do not hesitate to write to us continually, and to announce the good news concerning your health. For you know52.676 how great a favor you will give us. Since you ordered that we should be lodged in your properties, as I learned upon my departure, it was no longer decided for us to be brought to Sebasteia, but to a most desolate place of Armenia, Cucusus, and a most dangerous one on account of the Isaurian raids. Nevertheless, we are grateful to your nobility, and we have accepted the honor, that even in our absence you took such care as to prepare lodging for us, and to ask that we be lodged in your properties. But if you have any friends in Cucusus, please be so good as to write to them. 122. To Marcian. You are blessed, and thrice-blessed, and this many times over, for showing such magnanimity towards those in need in so harsh a winter and so great a storm of affairs. For the greatness of your charity has not escaped our notice, and that you have become a new harbor for all, standing by orphans, comforting widows in every way, bearing their poverty, rectifying their destitution, not even letting them feel this distress, but becoming all things to them, and nourishing a whole populace with wheat, and wine, and oil, and all other things. May God repay you the reward both in the present life and in the age to come for this magnanimity, this munificence, this eagerness, this zeal, this love for the poor, this genuine love; for indeed in all these things you abound and flourish,
