having brought the Maccabees to Antioch he tortured and killed them. And he deposed the high priesthood of Judea, and the temple of the Jews, which was Solomon's, he made a temple of Zeus 207 Olympius and Athena, defiling the house with swine's flesh, and he prevented the Jews from their ancestral religion and forced them to Hellenize for three years. And this same Antiochus died, and his son Antiochus Glaucus, called Hierax, reigned for two years. And after him Demetrianus, son of Seleucus, reigned for 8 years. and a certain man named Judas, a Jew by race, having come to Antioch the great, besought Demetrianus the king, entreating him, and he gave him the temple and the relics of the Maccabees. and they buried them in Antioch the great in the so-called Kerateion; for there was a synagogue of the Jews there; for a little before the city of Antioch, Antiochus had punished them on the ever-weeping mountain opposite Casius Zeus. And Judas, having purified the temple and rebuilt Jerusalem, celebrated the Passover to God. This was the 2nd capture of Jerusalem, as Eusebius of Pamphilus chronicled. And after Demetrianus, Antiochus the grandson of Grypus became king, the son of Laodice, daughter of Ariarathes, king of the Cappadocians, for 9 years. and Antioch the great then suffered a divine wrath in the eighth year of his reign, under the same Macedonians, 152 years after the foundation of the wall was laid from the beginning by Seleucus Nicator, at the 10th hour of the day, on the 21st of the month 208 Peritius, which is also February. and it was all renewed, as Domnus the chronicler wrote; and after the walls and the whole city were completed, it suffered after 122 years; and it became better. And after Antiochus, grandson of Grypus, reigned Antiochus Euergetes, who was tyrannized by the Parthians and campaigned greatly against them. and after many Parthians had perished, they came to friendship; and he took for his son Antiochus, called Cyzicenus, a wife, the daughter of Arsaces the Parthian who had tyrannized him, by name Brittane; and the war ceased. And after Antiochus Euergetes, 9 other kings from his line reigned until the reign of Antiochus Dionicus the leper, the father of Cleopatra and Antiochis. And in the times of the reign of those before the aforementioned Antiochus Dionicus, the king, or rather toparch, Pyrrhus the Epirote, ruled the Romans, having received an oracle that he would die by a woman. and Curius, the consul of the Romans, joining battle with him, defeated him; and Pyrrhus, having fled, came near a city which had houses outside the walls; and a woman, having thrown a tile against the top of his head, killed him. And after these things, Magnus, also called Paulus the Macedonian, became consul; who killed in battle the king of Macedonia 209 named Perses, and taking the country of Macedonia, he made it subject to the Romans; whom Sallust mentions in his Catilinarian exposition, recalling the oration of Caesar. and after these things, Perses the Epirote, the neomachos and toparch of Thessaly, reigns over his own country, whom Eutropius the Roman writer named Perses in his own exposition in his translation. And Palaephatus also mentions him. And Lucius Paulus, consul of the Romans, destroyed this same Perses in war. In which times, a certain Hannibal by name, king of the Africans, tyrannized Rome for twenty years, it being without a king, but administered by the consuls. who destroyed the greater part of all Italy, subjugating it by wars, and he slays the aforementioned Paulus. And finally the senate of Rome put forward a consul powerful in all things, but especially in wars, the so-called Scipio the great. which Scipio, while Hannibal was lingering in Italy, took a multitude of soldiers and went away into the country of Hannibal, to Africa, and destroyed it, setting it on fire
