TITLE 38. -Concerning judgment, and retribution, and the exactness of God; and that one must not exact vengeance beyond the wrath of God, or show humanity contrary to His commandments. Samuel said to Saul: Were you not small in the sight of the Lord, a leader of the scepter of a tribe of Israel, and the Lord anointed you king over Israel? And He said to you: Go, and utterly destroy Amalek, those who sin against me, and you shall fight them until you have consumed them. And why did you not listen to the voice of the Lord, but rushed upon the spoil, and brought the king and spared him? And you have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord will reject you from being king over Israel. Elijah came and said to Ahab king of Israel: Thus says the Lord: Because Syria has said, 'The Lord is a God of the mountains, the God of Israel, and not a God of the valleys is He'; I will give this great power into your hand, and you shall know that I am the Lord. And Israel struck Syria, a hundred thousand foot soldiers in one day, and the wall fell on twenty-seven thousand men, and the son of Ader fled, and his servants said to him: Behold, we know that the kings of Israel are kings of mercy. Let us put sackcloth on our loins and ropes on our heads, and let us go out to the king of Israel, so that he may save our lives. And they did so, and said to the king of Israel: Your servant the son of Ader says, Let my soul live. And the king said: Is he still alive? My brother. And the son of Ader went out to him, and they brought him up to him on the chariot. And he said to him: The cities which my father took from your father, I will restore to you, and you shall make streets for yourself in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. And he made a covenant with him and sent him away. And after a little while: The man of God said to him: Thus says the Lord: Because you have let go out of my hand a man of destruction, your life shall be for his life, and your people for his people. I will search Jerusalem with a lamp, and I will punish the men who despise their own observances. Open her storehouses; search her as a cave, and utterly destroy her, let there be no remnant of her. O earth, earth, hear the word of the Lord: Write this man down as an outcast to men; for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting on the throne of David, ruling in Judah. Indeed, concerning those who are hostile to the truth, and who hinder the commandments of God, it is necessary to act according to the command of the Lord who said: If your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and cast it from you. For philanthropy towards such persons is similar to the undisciplined goodness 95.1249 of Saul towards Agag, which he showed contrary to what was commanded him by the Lord.

TITLE 39. -Concerning forced service. The poor have worked the vineyards of the impious fasting and without wages.

Whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. He who builds his house not with righteousness, and his upper rooms not with judgment, works for his neighbor for nothing, and will not give him his wages. Behold, the wages of the laborers who have reaped your fields, which you have kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of the reapers have entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. TITLE 40. -Concerning good shame. Shem and Japheth, taking the garment, laid it upon both their shoulders, and walked backward, and covered the nakedness of their father, and they did not see their father's nakedness. There is a shame that brings sin, and there is a shame that is glory and grace. Before the thunder hastens

ΛΗʹ.
