If you wish to learn the teaching of Christianity, grant me a day 4.15.22 and listen. The proconsul said: Persuade the people. Polycarp said: You I have thought worthy of a response, for we have been taught to give fitting honor to rulers and authorities appointed by God, such honor as does not harm us; but as for them, I do not consider them worthy 4.15.23 to hear my defense. But the proconsul said: I have wild beasts; I will throw you to them, unless you repent. But he said: Call them. For repentance from better to worse is a change not permitted to us, but it is a noble thing to change from evil to righteous. 4.15.24 And he again to him: I will have you consumed by fire, if you despise the wild beasts, unless you repent. Polycarp said: You threaten fire that burns for an hour and after a little is quenched; for you are ignorant of the fire of the coming judgment and eternal punishment 4.15.25 reserved for the impious. But why do you delay? Bring what you wish. Saying these and many other things, he was filled with courage and joy, and his face was filled with grace, so that he not only did not collapse in confusion at what was said to him, but on the contrary the proconsul was astounded and sent his herald to proclaim in the middle of the stadium: Thrice Polycarp has confessed that he is a Christian. When this had been said by the herald, 4.15.26 the whole multitude of Gentiles and Jews dwelling in Smyrna cried out with uncontrollable anger and a loud voice: This is the teacher of Asia, the father of the Christians, the destroyer of our gods, who teaches many not to sacrifice nor 4.15.27 to worship. Saying these things, they cried out and asked the Asiarch Philip to let loose a lion on Polycarp; but he said that it was not lawful for him, since he had finished the beast-hunts. Then it seemed good to them to cry out with one accord that the living Polycarp 4.15.28 be burned. For it was necessary that the vision which had appeared to him concerning his pillow should be fulfilled; when while praying he saw it burning, he turned to the faithful with him and said prophetically: I must be burned alive. These things therefore with 4.15.29 so much speed happened faster than they were said, the crowds immediately gathering wood and kindling from the workshops and from the baths, with the Jews especially being zealous, as is their custom, 4.15.30 in assisting in this. But when the pyre was prepared, taking off for himself all his clothes and loosing his belt, he tried also to take off his shoes, not having done this before because each of the faithful was always eager to be the first to touch his skin; for on account of his good life he had been honored 4.15.31 in every way even before his gray hairs. Therefore the instruments prepared for the pyre were immediately placed around him; and when they were about to nail him also, he said: Leave me thus; for He who gives me to endure the fire will also give me to remain on the pyre without the security of your nails, unmoved 4.15.32. So they did not nail him, but tied him. And he, with his hands behind him and bound like a choice 4.15.33 ram, brought up from a great flock as a whole burnt offering acceptable to God Almighty, said: O Father of your beloved and blessed Son Jesus Christ, through whom we have received the knowledge of you, the God of angels and powers and of all creation and of the whole race of the righteous who live before you, I bless you that you have deemed me worthy of this day and hour, to take a part in the number of the martyrs in the cup of your Christ for 4.15.34 the resurrection to eternal life of both soul and body in the incorruptibility of the Holy Spirit; among whom may I be received before you today as a rich and acceptable sacrifice, just as you have prepared beforehand, revealed beforehand 4.15.35 and fulfilled, O true and faithful God. For this reason and for all things I praise you, I bless you, I glorify you through the eternal high priest Jesus Christ your beloved Son, through whom to you with him in the Holy Spirit be glory both now and for the 4.15.36 coming ages, Amen. And when he had sent up the Amen and
