storing up for yourself the greatest rewards in the age to come. We too, learning these things while sitting in so great a wilderness, and surrounded by many tribulations; for indeed the siege of Isaurian fear, and the desolation of the place, and the severity of winter afflict us; but nevertheless, hearing these things about your honor, we have no perception of these painful things, but we also reap much consolation, leaping, rejoicing, being glad at so many good deeds, at the unspeakable wealth which you are gathering for yourself in heaven. So that we may rejoice in another matter as well, do not hesitate to write to us continually, announcing the good news about your health. For we greatly desire to hear about your well-being. And you yourself know this, since you also know that other thing, how we always hold fast to your love. 223. To the presbyters and monks in Phoenicia, who are instructing the Greeks. When pilots see the sea raging, and swelling, and the great storm, and the squall, not only do they not abandon the ship, but then they also apply greater diligence and greater eagerness, being sober themselves and rousing the others. And again, when physicians see a fever has arisen and become severe, not only do they not abandon the one who is sick, but then they also do everything, both by themselves and through others, employing greater diligence and eagerness, 52.677 so as to get rid of the evil. For what reason do I say these things? So that no one may deceive you because of the disturbance that has occurred to abandon Phoenicia and to depart from there; but by as much as the difficulties are more numerous, and the waves more harsh, and the disturbance greater, by so much the more do you remain, being diligent, sober, watchful, showing forth greater eagerness, so that your most beautiful building may not be destroyed, nor so much labor become useless, nor your husbandry be wiped out. For God is able both to end the disturbance and to give you the reward for your endurance. For your reward is not so great when things were accomplished with ease, as it is for you now, when the difficulty is great, the disturbance is great, and many are those who cause scandal. Considering, therefore, both the toil you have toiled, and the labor you have endured, and the good deeds you have accomplished, and that by the grace of God you have destroyed so great a portion of impiety, and the affairs of Phoenicia have advanced, and that your reward is now more plentiful and your recompense greater, and that God will quickly destroy the hindrances, and will give you many returns for your endurance, remain, stand firm. For nothing is to be lacking to you even now, but I have ordered that you enjoy the same abundance and plenty, whether in clothing, or in footwear, or in provisions for the brothers. But if we, being in so great an affliction and tribulation, and inhabiting the wilderness of Cucusus, take such great care for your good deeds, how much more ought you also, enjoying great abundance—I speak with respect to the need of necessities—to contribute what is from yourselves. Therefore I beseech you, let no one frighten you. For affairs also have more favorable hopes; and you will be able to learn this from the copies that were sent from my lord, the most devout presbyter Constantius. And if you remain, even if the hindrances are countless, you will overcome them all. For nothing is equal to endurance and perseverance; for it is like a rock; but these disturbances and plots, which are made against the Church, are like waves breaking against the rock, and dissolving into their own foam. Consider how many things the blessed apostles suffered both from their own people and from strangers, and that the whole time of their preaching they went through by means of temptations, by means of dangers, by means of plots, being spent in prisons, and chains, and abductions, and scourgings and famines, and nakedness. But nevertheless, even while living in the very prisons, they did not abandon the stewardship entrusted to them; but
