he sent, this became the cause of all his evils. For it is sufficient even by itself to corrupt every virtue of the soul, whether it finds almsgiving, or prayer, or fasting, or anything whatsoever. For that which is exalted among men, he says, is an abomination before the Lord. Therefore not only fornication, nor adultery is wont to defile those who practice it, but also pride, and much more than those. Why? Because for fornication, even if it is an unpardonable evil, yet one has desire to plead; but arrogance would not find any cause, nor any pretext whatsoever, by which it might obtain even a shadow of pardon; but this is nothing else than a perversion of soul and a most grievous disease, born from nowhere else than from folly. For there is nothing more foolish than an arrogant man, even if he is clothed in wealth, even if he possesses much external wisdom, even if he is established in power, even if he carries about all things that seem to be enviable among men. For if the one who is arrogant over things truly good is wretched and miserable, and loses the reward for all of them; how would he who is puffed up over things that are nothing, and because of the shadow and the flower of the grass (for this is present glory) inflates himself, not be the most ridiculous of all, doing the same thing as a poor and needy man would do, who, though wasting away with hunger all the time, if it should ever happen that he sees a good dream for one night, exults because of this? O wretched and miserable one, when your soul is being corrupted by a most grievous disease, and you are poor with the utmost poverty, are you proud that you have so and so many talents of gold? that you have a multitude of slaves? But these things are not yours. And if you are not persuaded by my words, learn from the experience of those who have gone before. But if you are so intoxicated as not to be taught these things from what happens to others, wait a little while, and you will know from what happens to you that there is no benefit from these things to you 59.107, when you are at your last gasp, and not master of a single hour, nor of a brief moment, you will unwillingly leave them to those present, and often to those whom you do not wish. For many were not even permitted to give instructions concerning them, but departed suddenly, wishing to enjoy them, but not being permitted, but being dragged away, and yielding them to others, and by force surrendering them to those they did not wish. So that we may not suffer this, from this moment, being strong and healthy, let us send them away to our own city. For only thus shall we be able to enjoy them, but in no other way; thus we shall store them away in an inviolable and safe place. For there is not, there is not anything there that can take them away; there is no death, there are no true wills, there are no successors to inheritances, no slanders and plots; but it is possible for the one who departs from here bringing many things with him, 59.108 to reap their fruit forever. Who then is so wretched as not to wish to revel in his own riches completely? Let us therefore transport our wealth, and transfer it there. We shall not need donkeys, and camels, and carriages, nor ships for such a transfer; for God has freed us from this difficulty too; but we only need the poor, the lame, the maimed, the sick. They have been entrusted with such a transfer; these are they who send the riches to heaven, these are they who bring the owners of such riches into the inheritance of eternal goods; of which may we all be counted worthy to attain, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom and with whom to the Father be glory, together with the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

59.107 HOMILY 17. These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where was

John baptizing. The next day he sees Jesus coming to him, and says; "Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world."
