Having kept your life in purity, and having adorned your works with faith, of the
heavenly glory you were deemed worthy, honorable Fathers, wherefore you hymn Christ unto the ages. Theot. Hail, gate and living cloud; hail, mountain, and bush, and lampstand; hail, temple,
and throne, and paradise; hail, she who gave birth to the Creator of all, blessed one.
Ode 9. The one foretold. Well through dispassion and contemplation, thrice-blessed one, you taught us the words of life of the
eternal, having left your confession to the world as a living pillar of orthodoxy. Truly you were glorified, God-bearing Fathers, by tortures and scourgings, by persecutions and
dangers, having contended in bonds and prisons, and irons, and exiles. Our holy Fathers, who with zeal and desire together completed
the course of martyrdom, entreat God and Master, to deliver your servants from all error.
Theot. A bush burning with fire and not consumed Moses of old foresaw (213),
O Virgin Mother of God, prefiguring the God-receiving womb that received the uncreated fire.
Exaposteilarion. Unchanging Light. You were shown to be a trumpet of wisdom, with your sweet-sounding tongue striking the hosts of the adversaries,
O Maximus, light of monastics; wherefore, delighting in your words, we understand the knowledge of existing things.
SERVICE II. At "Lord, I have cried." Stich. Tone 4. Prosomia. As one noble among martyrs. He who through compassion became, as He was pleased, man, in two wills
and energies understood, you preached, O holy Maximus, shutting the un-gated mouths of the profane, of those who glorify the monothelite, monoenergist error, through the influence of the devil, who contrived this evil.
With the sinews of your dogmas, you choked Pyrrhus, O Father, who was talking nonsense,
O Maximus, the evil-minded one; and you endured persecutions and afflictions, O ever-memorable one, being severely scourged, and having your tongue cut out, and your divine hand, ever raised to God, by which you continually wrote the most sublime dogmas.
Like the pen of a swift writer sharpened by the Spirit has your holy tongue become, O blessed one,
yours, writing beautifully in the Spirit upon the tablets of our hearts the law of divine virtues and the precision of dogmas, and the incarnation of Him who willed to appear to men in two natures and one hypostasis.
Glory. Tone pl. 4.
