And we say the Son is like the Father in all things, as the holy scriptures both say and teach. When these things had been read, those to whom these things were not pleasing stood up and said, “We have not come here in need of a faith; for we keep sound the one which we received from the beginning; but so that, if any innovation concerning it should arise, we might prevent it. If, therefore, what has been read innovates nothing, openly now anathematize the Arian heresy, in the same manner as the ancient canon of the church cast out the other heresies as blasphemous. For that the blasphemous doctrine of Arius has stirred up the tumults of the church and the disturbances that have occurred up to now, this has become clear to the whole world.” This proposition, not having been accepted by those around Ursacius and Valens, and Germanius and Auxentius and Demophilus and Gaius, completely divided the church. For these men sided with what was then read at Ariminum; but the others again confirmed the faith of Nicaea, and they also derided the proscription of what had been read; especially Athanasius, who, in writing to his own acquaintances, says the following things word for word. For what teaching for piety was lacking to the catholic church, that now they should inquire about the faith, and should prefix the consulate of the present times to the words set forth by them, allegedly concerning the faith? For Ursacius and Valens and Germanius have done what has neither happened nor ever been heard of among Christians. For the prophecies of the saints have a record of times; and Isaiah and Hosea lived “in the days of Uzziah and Jotham and Ahaz and Hezekiah” and Jeremiah in the days of Josiah; and Ezekiel and Daniel under Cyrus and Darius. And others prophesied in other times, not laying down the beginning of their piety; for it existed even before them and always and before the foundation of the world; this God prepared for us beforehand in Christ; nor did they mark the times of their own faith; for they themselves were faithful even before these times; but the times were of the message through them. καὶ εἰς τὰ καταχθόνια κατελθόντα, καὶ τὰ ἐκεῖσε οἰκονομήσαντα, ὃν «πυλωροὶ ᾅδου ἰδόντες ἔφριξαν,» καὶ ἀναστάντα τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ,
καὶ ἀναστραφέντα μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν, καὶ τεσσαράκοντα ἡμερῶν πληρουμένων, ἀναληφθέντα εἰς τοὺς οὐρανοὺς, καὶ καθεζόμενον ἐκ
δεξιῶν τοῦ Πατρὸς, καὶ ἐλευσόμενον τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ δόξῃ τῇ πατρικῇ, ἀποδιδόντα ἑκάστῳ κατὰ τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ. Καὶ εἰς τὸ Ἅγιον
Πνεῦμα, ὃ αὐτὸς ὁ μονογενὴς τοῦ Θεοῦ Υἱὸς Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς ἐπηγγείλατο πέμψαι τῷ γένει τῶν ἀνθρώπων, τὸν Παράκλητον, κατὰ τὸ
γεγραμμένον, «Ἀπέρχομαι πρὸς τὸν Πατέρα μου, καὶ παρακαλέσω τὸν Πατέρα μου, καὶ ἄλλον Παράκλητον πέμψει ὑμῖν, τὸ Πνεῦμα τῆς
ἀληθείας. Ἐκεῖνος ἐκ τοῦ ἐμοῦ λήψεται, καὶ διδάξει καὶ ὑπομνήσει ὑμᾶς πάντα.» Τὸ δὲ ὄνομα τῆς «οὐσίας,» διὰ τὸ ἁπλούστερον
ὑπὸ τῶν πατέρων τεθεῖσθαι, ἀγνοούμενον δὲ ὑπὸ τῶν λαῶν, σκάνδαλον φέρειν, διὰ τὸ μήτε τὰς γραφὰς τοῦτο περιέχειν, ἤρεσε τοῦτο
περιαιρεθῆναι, καὶ παντελῶς μηδεμίαν μνήμην «οὐσίας» ἐπὶ Θεοῦ εἶναι τοῦ λοιποῦ, διὰ τὸ τὰς θείας γραφὰς μηδαμοῦ περὶ Πατρὸς
καὶ Υἱοῦ οὐσίας μεμνῆσθαι. Ὅμοιον δὲ λέγομεν τὸν Υἱὸν τῷ Πατρὶ κατὰ πάντα, ὡς αἱ ἅγιαι γραφαὶ λέγουσίν τε καὶ διδάσκουσιν.
Τούτων ἀναγνωσθέντων, διαναστάντες οἷς ταῦτα οὐκ ἤρεσκεν ἔφασαν, «Οὐ δεόμενοι πίστεως ἐνταῦθα συνεληλύθαμεν· ὑγιῆ γὰρ φυλάττομεν,
ἣν ἐξ ἀρχῆς παρειλήφαμεν· ἀλλ' ἵνα, εἴ τις περὶ ταύτην καινοτομία γένοιτο, ταύτην κωλύσωμεν. Εἰ οὖν τὰ ἀναγνωσθέντα μηδὲν
καινοτομεῖ, φανερῶς ἤδη τὴν Ἀρειανὴν αἵρεσιν ἀναθεματίσατε, καθ' ὃν τρόπον καὶ τὰς ἄλλας αἱρέσεις ὁ παλαιὸς κανὼν τῆς ἐκκλησίας
ὡς βλασφήμους ἐξέβαλεν. Ὅτι γὰρ τὸ βλάσφημον Ἀρείου δόγμα τοὺς θορύβους τῆς ἐκκλησίας καὶ τὰς ἄχρι νῦν γινομένας, ἐκίνησε
ταραχὰς, τοῦτο τῇ οἰκουμένῃ δῆλον καθέστηκεν.» Αὕτη ἡ πρότασις, ἡ ὑπὸ τῶν περὶ Οὐρσάκιον καὶ Οὐάλεντα, Γερμάνιόν τε καὶ Αὐξέντιον
καὶ ∆ημόφιλον καὶ Γάϊον μὴ δεχθεῖσα, τελέως τὴν ἐκκλησίαν διέσπασεν. Οὗτοι μὲν γὰρ τοῖς τότε κατὰ τὴν ἐν Ἀριμίνῳ ἀναγνωσθεῖσι
προσέθεντο· οἱ δὲ τὴν ἐν Νικαίᾳ πίστιν αὖθις ἐκύρωσαν, κατεγέλασαν δὲ καὶ τῆς προγραφῆς τῶν ἀναγνωσθέντων· μάλιστα δὲ Ἀθανάσιος,
δι' ὧν πρὸς τοὺς ἑαυτοῦ γνωρίμους ἐπιστέλλων τοιάδε κατὰ λέξιν φησίν. Τί γὰρ ἔλειπε διδασκαλίας εἰς εὐσέβειαν τῇ καθολικῇ
ἐκκλησίᾳ, ἵνα νῦν περὶ πίστεως ζητῶσι, καὶ τὴν ὑπατείαν τῶν παρόντων χρόνων προτάσσωσι τῶν παρ' αὐτῶν ἐκτιθεμένων ῥημάτων
δῆθεν περὶ πίστεως; Οὐρσάκιος γὰρ καὶ Οὐάλης καὶ Γερμάνιος πεποιήκασιν, ὃ μήτε γέγονεν μήτε ἠκούσθη ποτε παρὰ Χριστιανοῖς.
Γράψαντες γὰρ ὡς ἤθελον αὐτοὶ πιστεύειν, προέταξαν τὴν ὑπατείαν καὶ τὸν μῆνα καὶ τὴν ἡμέραν τοῦ παρόντος χρόνου, ἵνα δείξωσι
πᾶσι τοῖς φρονίμοις, ὅτι μὴ πρότερον ἀλλὰ νῦν ἐπὶ Κωνσταντίου ἀρχὴν ἔχει τούτων ἡ πίστις. Πάντες γὰρ πρὸς τὴν ἰδίαν αἵρεσιν
βλέποντες ἔγραφον. Πρὸς τούτοις περὶ τοῦ Κυρίου προσποιούμενοι γράφειν, ἄλλον «δεσπότην» ἑαυτῶν ὀνομάζουσι Κωνστάντιον· αὐτὸς
γὰρ ἦν ὁ τὴν δυναστείαν τῆς ἀσεβείας αὐτοῖς παρέχων. Καὶ αἰώνιον δὲ αὐτὸν βασιλέα εἰρήκασιν οἱ τὸν Υἱὸν ἀΐδιον ἀρνούμενοι·
οὕτως εἰσὶ πρὸς ἀσέβειαν Χριστομάχοι. Ἀλλ' ἴσως ἐστὶν αὐτοῖς πρόφασις τῆς ὑπατείας ἡ τῶν ἁγίων προφητῶν χρονογραφία. Ἀλλὰ
κἂν τοῦτο τολμήσωσιν εἰπεῖν, πολὺ τὴν ἀμαθίαν ἑαυτῶν ἐξαγγέλλουσιν. Αἱ μὲν γὰρ τῶν ἁγίων προφητεῖαι χρόνων ἔχουσι μνήμην·
καὶ Ἡσαΐας μὲν καὶ Ὠσηὲ «ἐν ἡμέραις Ὀζίου καὶ Ἰωάθαμ καὶ Ἄχαζ καὶ Ἐζεκίου» γεγόνασιἸερεμίας δὲ ἐν ἡμέραις Ἰωσίου· Ἰεζεκιὴλ
δὲ καὶ ∆ανιὴλ ἐπὶ Κύρου καὶ ∆αρείου. Καὶ ἄλλοι ἐν ἄλλοις χρόνοις ἐπροφήτευσαν, οὐ τῆς θεοσεβείας ἀρχὴν καταβαλλόμενοι· ἦν
γὰρ καὶ πρὸ αὐτῶν καὶ ἀεὶ καὶ πρὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου· ταύτην ἡμῖν ὁ Θεὸς ἐν Χριστῷ προητοίμασεν· οὐδὲ τῆς αὐτῶν πίστεως τοὺς
χρόνους ἐσήμαινον· ἦσαν γὰρ καὶ πρὸ τούτων τῶν χρόνων αὐτοὶ πιστοί· ἀλλὰ τῆς δι' αὐτῶν ἀπαγγελίας ἦσαν οἱ χρόνοι. Ἡ δὲ ἀπαγγελία
