such a thing, which grace does not grant and pardon does not heal. 13.3.3 And who is so dull of hearing and deaf to the words of Job, crying out plainly to all that "No one is clean from filth, not even if his life is one day"? And what person in their right mind would think such a thing, as, being subject to charges, and these in the court of God, to think pardon superfluous and mercy useless? 13.4.1 But even if they had attained the summit of righteousness and exactness, having truly trodden according to what is written "on serpents and scorpions," and were proclaimed victors and crowned ones against sin, not even then should they have regulated the lives of all others by their own manliness, but rather to acknowledge the grace to God who gave it for their own success, that they both mastered their nature and were not overcome by satanic temptations, and to extend a right hand of brotherly love to those who have grown weak, and raise them from the mud and cleanse them from defilements. 13.4.2 For thus they would have won double praise, receiving the rewards both of their own courage together and of their brotherly and kind sympathy. But now, being men who walk upon the earth and living a life not angelic nor near to the incorporeal beings, but such a one as someone might both bring to account and mock, they judge austerely and with much authority cast the condemning vote, so that I, often choked by their arrogance and pride, say concerning them the gospel sayings, that "not seeing the beams in your own eyes, you blow away the specks from the sight of others." 13.4.3 And binding the heaviest burdens on others, you go about as harsh judges and weak burden-bearers, anticipating the judgment seat of Christ and usurping the decision of the Judge, despicable servants and inexorable judges of your fellow servants. 13.5.1 If you are zealous for God as ones created in His image, imitate your archetype; O Christians, that humane name, be zealous for the love of Christ, look to the richness of his philanthropy. For being about to appear to men through a man, He sent John beforehand, a preacher of repentance, a promoter of remorse, and all the prophets before John as teachers of conversion. 13.5.2 Then He Himself, appearing after a little while, cries out in person with his own voice: "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." And how did he receive those who obeyed the call? He gave remission of sins without toil, an instantaneous and brief release from sorrows; the Word sanctified, the Spirit sealed; the old man was buried in the water, the new was born, rejuvenated by grace. 13.5.3 What followed? The man became one of the household instead of a stranger, a son instead of a foreigner, an initiate from a profane person, a holy one from the ungodly. The one, therefore, who was enriched with such magnificent and unsurpassable gifts, having sinned against his generous and good benefactor, before you, the difficult and unmerciful judges, immediately without being given a hearing, would certainly have been led to destruction, both cut off from life here and punished there. 13.5.4 But since the Lord of the vote is another, He who shows mercy to thousands and ten thousands and does not desire the death of the sinner, but awaits his conversion, not even so were those who had insulted the former grace punished, but again a second mercy follows the first and pardon is joined with amnesty, and a falling tear is equivalent to the font, and a weary groan brings back the grace that had withdrawn for a little while. 13.5.5 If you disbelieve the word, ask Peter sitting in the house of the high priest, and he will tell you, how, bitterly lamenting the transgression of his denial, he was cleansed, and did not return to being Simon, but remained Peter the apostle. 13.6.1 But I think, that even Judas Iscariot, if he had not quickly become his own executioner, judging his sin to be unpardonable, but had fallen before mercy

τοιοῦτον, ὃ μὴ χάρις δωρεῖται καὶ θεραπεύει συγγνώμη. 13.3.3 Καὶ τίς οὕτως ὑπόκωφος καὶ ἀνήκοος τῶν λόγων τοῦ Ἰὼβ διαρρήδην πρὸς πάντας ἐκβοῶντος ὅτι Οὐδεὶς καθαρὸς ἀπὸ ῥύπου, οὐδ' ἂν μία ἡμέρα ἡ ζωὴ αὐτοῦ; Τίς δ' ἂν σωφρονῶν τοιοῦτον φρονήσειεν, ὡς ὑποκείμενος εὐθύναις καὶ ταύταις ἐν δικαστηρίῳ Θεοῦ περιττὸν οἴεσθαι συγγνώμην καὶ ἀχρεῖον τὸν ἔλεον; 13.4.1 Εἰ δὲ καὶ πρὸς τὸ ἀκρότατον δικαιοσύνης καὶ ἀκριβείας ἦσαν ἐληλακότες, πατήσαντες δὲ ἀληθῶς κατὰ τὸ γεγραμμένον ἐπάνω ὄφεων καὶ σκορπίων, νικηταὶ δὲ καὶ στεφανῖται κατὰ τῆς ἁμαρτίας ἀνηγορεύθησαν, οὐδ' οὕτως ἐχρῆν πρὸς τὴν οἰκείαν ἀνδρείαν καὶ τῶν ἄλλων ἁπάντων κανονίζειν τὸν βίον, ἀλλὰ τῆς μὲν ἰδίας εὐδοκιμήσεως τῷ δεδώκοτι Θεῷ τὴν χάριν ὁμολογεῖν, ὅτι καὶ φύσιν ἡγεμονικῶς ἡνιόχησαν καὶ πειρασμῶν σατανικῶν οὐκ ἐγένοντο χείρους, τοῖς δὲ ἀσθενήσασιν ὀρέγειν φιλαδελφίας δεξίαν καὶ ἀνεγείρειν ἐκ τοῦ πηλοῦ καὶ καθαίρειν ἐκ τῶν μολυσμάτων. 13.4.2 ∆ιπλοῦν γὰρ ἂν οὕτως τὸν ἔπαινον ἤραντο τῆς τε ἰδίας ἀνδραγαθίας ὁμοῦ καὶ τῆς φιλαδέλφου καὶ χρηστῆς συμπαθείας τὰ γέρα λαμβάνοντες. Νυνὶ δὲ ἄνθρωποί τε ὄντες τῶν χαμαὶ ἐρχομένων καὶ ζῶντες βίον οὐ τὸν ἀγγελικὸν καὶ ἐγγὺς τῶν ἀσωμάτων, ἀλλὰ τοιοῦτον οἷον ἄν τις καὶ ὑπ' εὐθύνας ἀγάγοι καὶ σκώψειεν, δικάζουσιν αὐστηρῶς καὶ μετὰ πολλῆς τῆς αὐθεντίας τὴν κατακρίνουσαν φέρουσι ψῆφον, ὡς ἐμὲ πολλάκις ὑπὸ τοῦ τύφου καὶ τῆς ἀλαζονείας ἀποπνιγόμενον εἰπεῖν ἐπ' αὐτοῖς τὰς εὐαγγελικὰς ῥήσεις, ὅτι τὰς δοκοὺς ἐν τοῖς ἰδίοις ὀφθαλμοῖς μὴ βλέποντες τῶν ἀλλοτρίων ὄψεων ἀποφυσᾶτε τὰ κάρφη. 13.4.3 Καὶ τὰ βαρύτατα φορτία τοῖς ἄλλοις δεσμεύοντες περινοστεῖτε βαρεῖς κριταὶ καὶ ἀσθενεῖς ἀχθοφόροι τὸ βῆμα τοῦ Χριστοῦ προλαμβάνοντες καὶ τοῦ κριτοῦ τὴν ἀπόφασιν προαρπάζοντες, δοῦλοι καταφρονηταὶ καὶ ἀπαραίτητοι τῶν ὁμοδούλων κριταί. 13.5.1 Εἰ ζηλοῦτε Θεὸν ὡς κατ' εἰκόνα κτισθέντες, μιμήσασθε ὑμῶν τὸν ἀρχέτυπον· ὦ χριστιανοί, τὸ φιλάνθρωπον ὄνομα, ζηλώσατε τοῦ Χριστοῦ τὴν ἀγάπην, ἀποβλέψατε πρὸς τὸν πλοῦτον τῆς ἐκείνου φιλαν θρωπίας. Μέλλων γὰρ ἀνθρώποις ἐπιφαίνεσθαι δι' ἀνθρώπου προκαθῆκε τὸν Ἰωάννην, μετανοίας κήρυκα, μεταμελείας εἰσηγητὴν καὶ πάντας πρὸ Ἰωάννου προφήτας ἐπιστροφῆς διδασκάλους. 13.5.2 Εἶτα καὶ αὐτὸς μετ' ὀλίγον ἐπιφανεὶς οἰκείᾳ φωνῇ βοᾷ αὐτοπροσώπως· ∆εῦτε πρὸς μέ, πάντες οἱ κοπιῶντες καὶ πεφορτισμένοι, κἀγὼ ἀναπαύσω ὑμᾶς. Τοὺς δὲ τῇ κλήσει πεισθέντας πῶς ὑπεδέξατο; Ἄπονον ἔδωκεν τῶν ἁμαρτημάτων τὴν ἄφεσιν, ἀκαριαίαν καὶ σύντομον τὴν τῶν λυπούντων ἀπαλλαγήν· Λόγος ἡγίασεν, Πνεῦμα ἐσφράγισεν· ὁ παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος ἐνετάφη τῷ ὕδατι, ὁ νέος ἐτέχθη ἀνηβήσας τῇ χάριτι. 13.5.3 Τί τὰ ἑξῆς; Ὁ ἄνθρωπος οἰκεῖος ἀντ' ἀλλοτρίου, υἱὸς ἀντὶ ξένου, μύστης ἐκ βεβήλου, ἅγιος ἐξ ἀσεβῶν. Ὁ τοίνυν ταῖς οὕτως μεγαλοπρεπέσι καὶ ἀνυπερβλήτοις δωρεαῖς πλουτισθείς, ἁμαρτὼν εἰς τὸν φιλότιμον καὶ ἀγαθὸν εὐεργέτην, παρὰ μὲν ὑμῖν τοῖς δυσκόλοις καὶ ἀμειλίκτοις δικασταῖς εὐθὺς μήτε λόγου μεταλαβών, πάντως ἂν ἐπὶ τὸν ὄλεθρον ἤχθη καὶ τῆς ἐνθάδε ζωῆς ἀποκοπεὶς καὶ τὴν ἐκεῖ κολαζόμενος. 13.5.4 Ἐπεὶ δὲ ἄλλος ἐστὶν ὁ τῆς ψήφου Κύριος, ὁ ποιῶν τὸ ἔλεος εἰς χιλιάδας καὶ μυριάδας καὶ μὴ θέλων τὸν θάνατον τοῦ ἁμαρτωλοῦ, ἀναμένων δὲ τὴν ἐπιστροφήν, οὐδ' οὕτως οἱ τὴν πρώην χάριν ὑβρίσαντες ἐτιμωρήθησαν, ἀλλὰ πάλιν δεύτερος ἔλεος ἀκολουθεῖ τῷ προτέρῳ καὶ ἀμνηστείᾳ συγγνώμη συν άπτεται καὶ δάκρυον στάζον ἰσοδυναμεῖ τῷ λουτρῷ καὶ στεναγμὸς ἐπί μοχθος ἐπανάγει τὴν χάριν πρὸς ὀλίγον ἀναχωρήσασαν. 13.5.5 Εἰ ἀπιστεῖς τῷ λόγῳ, Πέτρον ἐρώτησον ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ τοῦ ἀρχιερέως καθήμενον, καὶ λέξει σοι, ὅπως τὸ παράπτωμα τῆς ἀρνήσεως πικρῶς ὀδυράμενος ἐκαθάρθη καὶ οὐκ ἀνέλυσεν εἰς τὸν Σίμωνα, ἀλλὰ Πέτρος διέμεινεν ὁ ἀπόστολος. 13.6.1 Ἐγὼ δὲ νομίζω, ὅτι καὶ Ἰούδας ὁ Ἰσκαριώτης, εἰ μὴ ταχέως αὐτὸς ἑαυτοῦ ἐγένετο δήμιος ἀσύγγνωστον κρίνας τὴν ἁμαρτίαν, προσ πεσὼν δὲ τὸν ἔλεον
