having completed his prayer, the men in charge of the fire kindled the fire, and when a great flame flashed up, we saw a miracle, to whom it was granted to see, who were also preserved to report to the rest 4.15.37 what happened. For the fire, taking the shape of a vault, like a ship's sail filled by the wind, walled about the body of the martyr in a circle, and it was in the middle not like flesh being burned, but like gold and silver being refined in a furnace; for we also perceived such a fragrant scent as of frankincense blowing or some other 4.15.38 of the precious spices. Finally, when the lawless men saw that his body could not be consumed by the fire, they ordered 4.15.39 an executioner to go up to him and thrust a sword into him, and when he did this, a great quantity of blood came out, so as to extinguish the fire and to make the whole crowd marvel that there was such a difference between the unbelievers and the elect; of whom this one was also one, the most wonderful in our times, an apostolic and prophetic teacher, who became bishop of the catholic church in Smyrna; for every word that he uttered from his mouth both was fulfilled and will be fulfilled. 4.15.40 “But the rival, and envious evil one, the adversary of the race of the righteous, seeing the greatness of his martyrdom and his blameless conduct from the beginning, and that he was crowned with the crown of incorruption and had carried away an incontestable prize, contrived that not even his little body should be taken by us, although many desired to do this and to have fellowship with his holy little flesh. Therefore, some suborned Nicetes, the father of Herod 4.15.41 and brother of Alce, to entreat the governor not to give his body, ‘lest,’ he says, ‘leaving the crucified one, they begin to worship this man.’ And they said these things at the instigation and with the strong support of the Jews; who also kept watch when we were about to take him from the fire, being ignorant that we will never be able either to forsake Christ, who suffered for the salvation of the whole world of those who are being saved, or to worship 4.15.42 any other. For we worship this one as the Son of God, but the martyrs we love as disciples and imitators of the Lord, worthily, on account of their unsurpassed goodwill toward their own king and teacher; of whom may it be granted that we also become fellow partakers and fellow 4.15.43 disciples. Therefore, the centurion, seeing the contentiousness caused by the Jews, placed him in the middle, as is their custom, and burned him, and so we afterward took up his bones, more precious than costly stones and more valuable than gold, 4.15.44 and laid them where it was fitting. There, as we are able, gathering together in exultation and joy, the Lord will grant us to celebrate the birthday of his martyrdom, both for the memory of those who have already contended and for the training and 4.15.45 preparation of those who are to come. Such are the things concerning the blessed Polycarp; with those from Philadelphia, he being the twelfth to be martyred in Smyrna, who alone is remembered more by all, so that he is even spoken of by the gentiles in every place.” 4.15.46 Such then was the end to which the wonderful and apostolic Polycarp was counted worthy, the brethren of the church of Smyrna having set down the history in their letter which we have related; and in the same writing about him other martyrdoms were also appended that took place in the same Smyrna during the same period of time as the martyrdom of Polycarp, among whom Metrodorus also, who seemed to be a presbyter of the Marcionite error, was given over to the fire and destroyed. Indeed, 4.15.47 a certain renowned martyr of that time was known as Pionius; whose detailed confessions, the boldness of his speech, and his apologies for the faith before the people and the rulers, his instructive public speeches, and also his greetings to those who had fallen in the temptation during the persecution, and the words of comfort which he set before the brethren who came to him in prison, and the things which in addition to these he endured
