The black garments signify that we should be unseen to the world, as having our citizenship in heaven. But if someone should take the pallium, being four-cornered, also as the four cardinal virtues, he will not err from what is likely.

QUESTION A,69 ................................... RESPONSE [“The priest proclaims peace to the Church from the height of the cathedra,

imitating the Lord of the cathedra being taken up, both leaving and giving his own peace. But the response of the people, “and with your spirit,” (14Α_316> signifies this: You have granted us peace, O Lord, and concord with one another; grant us also peace, the undivided union with you, so that, being at peace with your Spirit, which you placed in us at the beginning of creation, we may be inseparable from your love.]

QUESTION A,70 ................................... RESPONSE [If the dead are not raised at all, why are they baptized on their behalf? the divine

Apostle said. If at all, he says, our bodies are not raised, why also in being baptized do we believe they are transformed into incorruptibility?]

QUESTION A,71 ................................... RESPONSE [If you seek a clarification of scriptural music, it must be understood thus. “Praise the

Lord with the sound of the trumpet”; in memory of the resurrection, the earth being shaken by a trumpet as it is written. “Praise him with the psaltery and kithara”; with our tongue and mouth being struck by the Spirit as with a plectrum. “Praise him with the drum and dance”; in flesh and soul, from which prayers proceed to God like dances. “Praise (14Α_318> him with strings and organ”; in the heart and in all the inward parts and sinews, which he has called an organ. “Praise him with well-sounding cymbals”; with the lips, through which the harmonious melodies of the psalmody are woven.]

QUESTION A,73 Since in certain copies of the Apostle it is contained that “we shall all

indeed fall asleep, but we shall not all be changed,” but in others that “we shall not all fall asleep, but we shall all be changed,” I ask to learn which of the readings one must approve and what is signified by them?

RESPONSE I think that according to either of the readings, since also the ancient

of the copies contain both, someone taking them piously will not fall away from the apostolic aim. According to “we shall all indeed fall asleep, but we shall not all be changed,” it must be understood thus, that we will all indeed endure the sleep of death, but we shall not all exchange glory and confidence; which the same Apostle sets forth more clearly elsewhere, saying, “since indeed when we are clothed, we shall not be found naked.” But according to “we shall not all fall asleep, but we shall all be changed,” it must be understood thus, that we shall not all sleep the sleep of time, so as to require burial and dissolution into corruption; but those found living then will endure a brief death, (14Α_320> not requiring the sleep of time on account of the resurrection that happens immediately; but all shall be changed, that is, they will put on incorruptibility.

μὲν κοιμηθησόμεθα, οὐ πάντες δὲ ἀλλαγησόμεθα», κατά τινα δὲ ὅτι «πάντες μὲν οὐ κοιμηθησόμεθα, πάντες δὲ ἀλλαγησόμεθα», παρακαλῶ μαθεῖν ποίαν χρὴ τῶν ἐκδόσεων ἐγκρῖναι καὶ τί τὰ ἐκ τούτων δηλούμενα;
