But to give away all possessions and money, yet not to contend nobly against the assaults of temptations and other afflictions, seems to me the mark of a neglectful soul, and one ignorant of the purpose of its own benefit. For just as gold that has been deeply corroded cannot otherwise be well purified and return to its proper brightness unless it is cast into the fire and beaten many times with hammers, so too a soul, corroded by the poison of sin and deeply debased, cannot otherwise be purified and recover its ancient beauty unless it communes with many temptations and enters into the furnace of afflictions. For the very word of our Lord indicates this, saying thus: "Sell your possessions and give to the poor, and take up your cross and come, follow me"(178), alluding through the cross to temptations and afflictions.Therefore, those who cast away these things and desert to the solitary life will gain nothing from the mere rejection of money and possessions, if they do not persevere to the end in temptations and afflictions and sorrows according to God. For Christ did not say: "In the putting away of your possessions you shall possess your souls," but "in your patience." For it is clear that both the distribution of money to the poor and the flight from the world are good and beneficial, but this by itself alone cannot make the man of God perfect without the endurance of temptations. And that this is so and seems good to God, hear him saying to the rich man: "If you wish," he says, "to be perfect, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and take up your cross and come, follow me" - alluding through the cross, as has been said, to afflictions and temptations.
For since the kingdom of heaven suffers violence and the violent take it by force, and it is not otherwise possible for the faithful to enter into it, except through the narrow gate of temptations and afflictions, the divine oracle rightly commands us: "Strive," it says, "to enter through the narrow gate," and again: "In your patience possess your souls," and: "You must through many tribulations enter into the kingdom of heaven." For the one who scatters (179) his own money to those in need and withdraws from the world and its affairs in hope of a reward, bears his conscience with great pleasure and at times is even robbed of his rewards by vainglory. But the one who, after giving everything to the poor, also endures painful things with thanksgiving of soul and perseveres in dreadful things, is sensible of all bitterness and painful toils, but has his reasoning inviolate and expects a great recompense both now and in the future, as one who has imitated the sufferings of Christ and abides in him in the days of the onset of temptations and afflictions.
For this reason I beseech you, brothers in Christ, let us be eager, according to the voice of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ, since we have renounced the world and the things in the world, that we may enter through the narrow gate, which is the cutting off and avoidance of our carnal mind and will. For without our being dead to the flesh and its desires and its wishes, it is not possible to obtain rest and release from evils and the freedom that comes to us from the consolation of the Holy Spirit. And without this - I mean, the visitation of the Spirit - no one will see the Lord, neither in the present age nor in the one to come. For that you have done a good thing, having scattered all your money to those in need, if indeed you left nothing for yourself like that Ananias, and in addition to these things renounced the world and the things in the world, and fleeing this life and its cares (180) you have run to a harbor of life, clothing yourself with the form of piety, I too agree and I praise you for the endeavor. ∆ιά τοι τοῦτο παρακαλῶ ὑμᾶς, ἐν Χριστῷ ἀδελφοί, σπουδάσωμεν κατά τήν φωνήν τοῦ Κυρίου καί Θεοῦ καί Σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ἐπειδή κόσμῳ καί τοῖς ἐν κόσμῳ ἀπεταξάμεθα, ἵνα διά τῆς στενῆς εἰσέλθωμεν πύλης, ἥτις ἐστίν ἡ ἐκκοπή καί ἀποφυγή τοῦ σαρκικοῦ ἡμῶν φρονήματος καί θελήματος.
