Longinus, who was magister and his friend, and trusting in these, he thought to have the kingdom without effort. But when Ariadne and the senate and the whole army proclaimed Anastasius the silentiarius as emperor, Longinus was thwarted in his hope. Therefore, when Anastasius became emperor, he was required by Euphemius the patriarch to give a written confession that he would not disturb anything of the church and the faith, calling him unworthy of the Christians and of the kingdom. But when the empress Ariadne and the senate compelled him, he received from him his own signature, that he accepted the dogmas of the council in Chalcedon as the rule of faith.
