For He Himself does not wish to postpone the gift, but by the delay He contrives for us to wait upon Him. For this reason He both defers the request, and often permits temptation to come, so that we may continually take refuge in Him, and having taken refuge, remain. So also do affectionate fathers, and mothers who love their children; when they see their children leaving their company and playing with their peers, they arrange for the servants to pretend many 57.192 frightful things, so that out of fear they are compelled to flee to their mother's bosom. So too God often raises a threat, not to bring it to pass, but to draw us to Himself. When, at any rate, we return to Him, He immediately dispels the fear; for if we were the same in temptations and in times of ease, there would be no need for temptations. And why do I speak of ourselves? For even for those saints, much correction came from this source. For this reason the Prophet also says: It is good for me that you have humbled me. And He Himself said to the Apostles: In the world you will have tribulation. And Paul hints at this very thing, when he says: A thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, to buffet me. For which reason, though he prayed to be delivered from the temptation, he did not succeed, because of the great benefit that came from it. And if we go through the whole life of David, we shall find him being more illustrious in dangers, both him and all the others like him. For Job shone more greatly then, and Joseph thus was more approved, and Jacob, and his father, and his, and all whoever bound on more glorious crowns, were both crowned and proclaimed from tribulations and temptations. Being aware of all these things, according to the wise saying, let us not be hasty in time of trial, but let us teach ourselves one thing only, to bear all things nobly, and not to be meddlesome, nor to be overly curious about what is happening. For to know when the tribulations must be ended belongs to God who permits them to come; but to bear them when they have been brought on with all thanksgiving, is henceforth the work of our gratitude; which if it happens, all good things will follow. Therefore, that these things may follow, and that we may become more approved here, and more glorious there, let us accept whatever is brought upon us, giving thanks for all things to the One who knows our benefit better than we do, and loves us more intensely than our parents; and chanting both these thoughts to ourselves in each of our troubles, let us quell our despondency, and in all things glorify God who does and provides all things for us. For thus we shall easily foil the plots, and we shall obtain the incorruptible crowns, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom be glory, power, honor to the Father, with the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen. 57.191 HOMILY 11. But when he saw many of the Sadducees and Pharisees coming to his baptism, he said to them: You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? a. How then does Christ say that they did not believe John? Because this was not to believe, to not receive the one preached by him. Since they seemed to pay attention to the Prophets and to the Lawgiver; but nevertheless He said they had not paid attention, because they did not receive the one prophesied by them. For if you had believed, He says, Moses, you would have believed Me; 57.192 And after this, when asked by Christ, The baptism of John, from where is it? they said, If we say, from earth, we fear the crowd; if we say, from heaven, he will say to us, Why then did you not believe him? So from all these things it is clear, that they came and were baptized; but they did not remain in the faith of the preaching. For John also shows their wickedness, from what they sent to the Baptist, saying: Are you Elijah? Are you the Christ? for which reason he also added: And those who were sent were from the Pharisees. What then? 57.193 Did not the crowds also think this same thing?

Οὐδὲ γὰρ αὐτὸς βούλεται ἀναβάλλεσθαι τὴν δόσιν, ἀλλὰ τῇ μελλήσει τὴν προσεδρείαν ἡμῖν σοφίζεται. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο καὶ ὑπερτίθεται τὴν αἴτησιν, καὶ πειρασμὸν συγχωρεῖ πολλάκις ἐπελθεῖν, ἵνα συνεχῶς πρὸς αὐτὸν καταφεύγωμεν, καὶ καταφυγόντες μένωμεν. Οὕτω καὶ πατέρες φιλόστοργοι ποιοῦσι, καὶ μητέρες φιλόπαιδες· ἐπειδὰν ἴδωσι τὰ παιδία τὴν πρὸς αὐτοὺς συνουσίαν ἀφέντα καὶ μετὰ τῶν ὁμηλίκων παίζοντα, πολλὰ τοὺς οἰκέτας ὑποκρίνασθαι 57.192 παρασκευάζουσι φοβερὰ, ὥστε ὑπὸ τοῦ δέους καταναγκασθῆναι πρὸς τὸν μητρικὸν κόλπον καταφυγεῖν Οὕτω καὶ ὁ Θεὸς ἀνατείνεται πολλάκις ἀπειλὴν, οὐχ ἵνα ἐπαγάγῃ, ἀλλ' ἵνα πρὸς αὑτὸν ἐφελκύσηται. Ὅταν γοῦν ἐπανέλθωμεν πρὸς αὐτὸν, λύει τὸν φόβον εὐθέως· ὡς εἴγε ὅμοιοι ἦμεν ἐν πειρασμοῖς καὶ ἐν ἀνέσει, οὐδ' ἂν ἐδέησε πειρασμῶν. Καὶ τί λέγω περὶ ἡμῶν; Καὶ γὰρ τοῖς ἁγίοις ἐκείνοις πολὺς ἐντεῦθεν ὁ σωφρονισμὸς ἦν. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο καὶ ὁ Προφήτης λέγει· Ἀγαθόν μοι ὅτι ἐταπείνωσάς με. Καὶ αὐτὸς δὲ τοῖς Ἀποστόλοις ἔλεγεν· Ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ θλῖψιν ἕξετε. Καὶ ὁ Παῦλος τοῦτο αὐτὸ αἰνίττεται, ὅταν λέγῃ· Ἐδόθη μοι σκόλοψ τῇ σαρκὶ, ἄγγελος Σατᾶν, ἵνα με κολαφίζῃ. ∆ιὸ καὶ δεηθεὶς ἀπαλλαγῆναι τοῦ πειρασμοῦ, οὐκ ἐπέτυχε, διὰ τὸ πολλὴν ἐξ αὐτοῦ τὴν ὠφέλειαν ἐγγίνεσθαι. Ἐὰν δὲ καὶ τοῦ ∆αυῒδ τὸν βίον ἐπέλθωμεν ἅπαντα, εὑρήσομεν αὐτὸν ἐν τοῖς κινδύνοις λαμπρότερον ὄντα, καὶ αὐτὸν, καὶ τοὺς ἄλλους ἅπαντας τοὺς κατ' ἐκεῖνον. Καὶ γὰρ ὁ Ἰὼβ τότε μειζόνως ἔλαμψε, καὶ ὁ Ἰωσὴφ δὲ οὕτως ἐπὶ πλέον εὐδοκίμησε, καὶ ὁ Ἰακὼβ δὲ, καὶ ὁ τούτου πατὴρ, καὶ ὁ ἐκείνου, καὶ πάντες ὅσοι πώποτε λαμπροτέρους ἀνεδήσαντο στεφάνους, ἀπὸ θλίψεων καὶ πειρασμῶν καὶ ἐστεφανώθησαν, καὶ ἀνεκηρύχθησαν. Ἅπερ πάντα συνειδότες, κατὰ τὸν σοφὸν λόγον, Μὴ σπεύσωμεν ἐν καιρῷ ἐπαγωγῆς, ἀλλ' ἓν μόνον ἑαυτοὺς παιδεύσωμεν, τὸ φέρειν πάντα γενναίως, καὶ μηδὲν πολυπραγμονεῖν, μηδὲ περιεργάζεσθαι τῶν γινομένων. Τὸ μὲν γὰρ εἰδέναι, πότε δεῖ λυθῆναι τὰς θλίψεις, τοῦ συγχωροῦντος αὐτὰς προσελθεῖν Θεοῦ· τὸ δὲ ἐπενεχθείσας μετὰ πάσης φέρειν εὐχαριστίας, τῆς ἡμῶν εὐγνωμοσύνης λοιπὸν ἔργον ἐστίν· ὅπερ ἐὰν γένηται, πάντα ἕψεται τὰ ἀγαθά. Ἵν' οὖν ταῦτα ἕπηται, καὶ δοκιμώτεροι μὲν ἐνταῦθα, λαμπρότεροι δὲ ἐκεῖσε γενώμεθα, πᾶν ὃ ἐὰν ἐπενεχθῇ δεχώμεθα, χάριν εἰδότες ὑπὲρ πάντων τῷ εἰδότι μᾶλλον ἡμῶν τὸ συμφέρον, καὶ τῶν γεγεννηκότων σφοδρότερον ἡμᾶς φιλοῦντι· καὶ τούτους ἀμφοτέρους τοὺς λογισμοὺς καθ' ἕκαστον τῶν δεινῶν ἑαυτοῖς ἐπᾴδοντες, καταστέλλωμεν τὴν ἀθυμίαν, καὶ δοξάζωμεν ἐν πᾶσι τὸν πάντα ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν ποιοῦντα καὶ πραγματευόμενον Θεόν. Οὕτω γὰρ καὶ τὰς ἐπιβουλὰς διακρουσόμεθα ῥᾳδίως, καὶ τῶν ἀκηράτων ἐπιτευξόμεθα στεφάνων, χάριτι καὶ φιλανθρωπίᾳ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, μεθ' οὗ τῷ Πατρὶ δόξα, κράτος, τιμὴ, σὺν ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι, νῦν καὶ ἀεὶ καὶ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. Ἀμήν. 57.191 ΟΜΙΛΙΑ ΙΑʹ. Ἰδὼν δὲ πολλοὺς τῶν Σαδδουκαίων καὶ Φαρι σαίων ἐρχομένους ἐπὶ τὸ βάπτισμα αὐτοῦ, εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν, τίς ὑπέδειξεν ὑμῖν φυγεῖν ἀπὸ τῆς μελλούσης ὀργῆς; αʹ. Πῶς οὖν φησιν ὁ Χριστὸς, ὅτι οὐκ ἐπίστευσαν Ἰωάννῃ; Ὅτι οὐκ ἦν τοῦτο πιστεῦσαι, τὸ τὸν κηρυττόμενον ὑπ' αὐτοῦ μὴ δέξασθαι Ἐπεὶ καὶ τοῖς Προφήταις ἔδοξαν προσέχειν καὶ τῷ Νομοθέτῃ· ἀλλ' ὅμως ἔφησεν αὐτοὺς μὴ προσεσχηκέναι, ἐπειδὴ τὸν παρ' ἐκείνων προφητευόμενον οὐκ ἐδέξαντο. Εἰ γὰρ ἐπιστεύσατε, φησὶ, Μωϋσῇ, ἐπιστεύσατε ἂν ἐμοί· 57.192 Καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα δὲ ἐρωτώμενοι παρὰ τοῦ Χριστοῦ, Τὸ βάπτισμα Ἰωάννου πόθεν ἐστίν; ἔλεγον, ὅτι Ἐὰν εἴπωμεν, ἀπὸ γῆς, φοβούμεθα τὸν ὄχλον· ἐὰν εἴπωμεν, ἀπὸ οὐρανοῦ, ἐρεῖ ἡμῖν, Πῶς οὖν οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε αὐτῷ; Ὥστε ἐξ ἁπάντων τούτων δῆλον, ὅτι παρεγένοντο μὲν καὶ ἐβαπτίσθησαν· οὐ μὴν ἔμειναν ἐπὶ τῆς πίστεως τοῦ κηρύγματος. Καὶ γὰρ ὁ Ἰωάννης δείκνυσιν αὐτῶν τὴν πονηρίαν, ἐξ ὧν πρὸς τὸν Βαπτιστὴν ἔπεμπον λέγοντες· Εἰ σὺ εἰ Ἠλίας; εἰ σὺ εἶ ὁ Χριστός; διὸ καὶ ἐπήγαγεν· Οἱ δὲ ἀπεσταλμένοι ἦσαν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων. Τί οὖν; 57.193 οὐχὶ καὶ οἱ ὄχλοι τὸ αὐτὸ τοῦτο ἐνόμιζον;
