you left thirsty? Did you not visit him when he was in prison? Therefore, and for this reason, you will hear: "You did not have mercy on yourself, you will not receive mercy."
But if someone says: "And since," he says, "it is so, and we have no reward for the money or things given by us, what need is there to give to the poor?" let him listen to the one who is going to judge him and render to each according to his works, as if saying to him: "Fool, what did you bring into the world or what visible thing did you yourself make? Did you not come forth naked from your mother's womb, and will you not depart from life naked and stand exposed before my judgment seat? And for what money of yours do you demand wages from me? Through what things of yours do you say you have mercy on your brothers and through them on me, who set all these things forth not for you alone, but for all in common? Or do you suppose that I desire anything and think that I am to be bribed (175) like the avaricious among judging men? For it is possible for you to think this out of ignorance. It is not because I desire money at all, but because I have mercy on you, not because I want to receive what is yours, but because I want to free you from the judgment upon them, that I legislate these things and for no other reason."
But do not think, brother, that God is in need and is not able to feed the poor and for this reason commands us to have mercy on them and to hold this commandment in high regard. May it not be so! But what the devil did through covetousness against us and for our destruction, this Christ has accomplished for us through almsgiving and has caused it to become for our salvation. What do I mean? The devil suggested to us to appropriate and hoard for ourselves those things set forth for common need, so that through this covetousness he might fasten two charges upon us and make us liable to eternal punishment and condemnation, one being that of mercilessness, and the other that of hope in hoarded wealth and not in God. For one who has wealth set aside cannot hope in God; and this is clear from what Christ our God said: "For where," He says, "your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Therefore, the one who distributes to all from the wealth he has stored up is not owed a reward for it, but is rather liable for the unjust withholding up to that point; and not only that, but he is also responsible for those who from time to time leave this life because of hunger and thirst, whom he, being able to feed them then, did not feed, having buried what belongs to the poor and allowed them to die violently from the (176) cold and hunger, being shown to be the murderer of as many as he was able to feed.
The good and compassionate Master, then, having remitted for us the judgment for all these charges, does not reckon these things as belonging to others that we are holding, but as our own, and promises to give us not only tenfold, but a hundredfold, to those who distribute these things to the brothers with cheerfulness. And cheerfulness is not to reckon these things as one's own, but as entrusted to him by God for the stewardship of his fellow servants, and to scatter them abundantly with joy and magnanimity, not out of grief or necessity, and especially so that we might with joy empty out what has been hoarded in hope of the true promise, which God has promised us, to give a hundredfold reward for this. For God, knowing that we are entirely held by the desire for money and the madness of wealth and are separated from them with difficulty, and that those who are deprived of these things in many ways despair of their very own life, used the appropriate medicine, promising to give us, as has been said, a hundredfold reward for what we empty out for the poor, so that, in the first place, we might be delivered from the judgment of covetousness upon them, and then also from having our confidence in them

Εἰ δέ λέγει τις· "Καί ἐπειδή, φησί, τοιοῦτόν ἐστι καί μισθόν τῶν παρ᾿ ἡμῶν διδομένων χρημάτων ἤ πραγμάτων οὐκ ἔχομεν, τίς καί διδόναι τοῖς πένησι χρεία ἐστίν;" ἀκουσάτω τοῦ μέλλοντος αὐτόν κρῖναι καί ἀποδοῦναι ἑκάστῳ κατά τά ἔργα αὐτοῦ, οἱονεί λέγοντος πρός αὐτόν· "Ἄφρων, τί εἰσήνεγκες εἰς τόν κόσμον ἤ τί τό ὁρώμενον αὐτός ἐποίησας; Οὐχί γυμνός ἐκ κοιλίας μητρός σου προῆλθες, γυμνός δέ ἐξελεύσῃ τοῦ βίου καί τετραχηλισμένος τῷ ἐμῷ βήματι παραστήσῃ; Καί ὑπέρ ποίων σου χρημάτων μισθούς μοι προσαπαιτεῖς; ∆ιά ποίων δέ σῶν πραγμάτων ἐλεεῖν λέγεις τούς ἀδελφούς σου καί διά τούτων ἐμέ, τόν πάντα ταῦτα οὐχί σοί μόνῳ, ἀλλά κοινά τοῖς πᾶσι προθέμενον; Ἤ ἐπιθυμεῖν με ὑπολαμβάνεις τινός καί δωροδοκεῖσθαι (175) ὁμοίως τοῖς φιλαργύροις τῶν κρινόντων ἀνθρώπων οἴει κἀμέ; ἔστι γάρ καί τοῦτο ἐξ ἀγνοίας λογίσασθαί σε. Οὐχί χρημάτων ὅλως ἐπιθυμῶν, ἀλλά ὑμᾶς ἐλεῶν, οὐχί τά ὑμέτερα θέλων λαβεῖν, ἀλλά τοῦ ἐπ᾿ αὐτοῖς κρίματος ἐλευθερῶσαι ὑμᾶς βουλόμενος, ταῦτα νομοθετῶ καί δι᾿ ἕτερόν τι οὐδέν".
Ἀλλά γάρ μή δοκῇς, ἀδελφέ, ὅτι ἀπορεῖ ὁ Θεός καί οὐ δύναται θρέψαι τούς πένητας καί διά τοῦτο προστάσσει ἡμῖν ἐλεεῖν αὐτούς καί περί πολλοῦ ποιεῖσθαι τήν ἐντολήν ταύτην. Μή γένοιτο! Ἀλλ᾿ ὅπερ διά πλεονεξίας καθ᾿ ἡμῶν καί εἰς ἀπώλειαν ἡμῶν ἐποίησεν ὁ διάβολος, τοῦτο διά τῆς ἐλεημοσύνης ὑπέρ ἡμῶν κατεσκεύασε καί εἰς σωτηρίαν ἡμῶν ἐποίησε γίνεσθαι ὁ Χριστός. Οἷόν τι λέγω; Ὑπέθετο ἡμῖν ὁ διάβολος τά εἰς κοινήν προτεθέντα χρείαν ἰδιοποιήσασθαι καί ἀποθησαυρίσαι αὐτά, ὅπως διά τῆς πλεονεξίας ταύτης δύο ἡμῖν ἐγκλήματα περιάψῃ καί τῆς αἰωνίου τιμωρίας καί κατακρίσεως ὑπαιτίους ποιήσῃ, ἕν μέν τό τῆς ἀνελεημοσύνης, ἕτερον δέ τῆς ἐπί τά ἀποκείμενα χρήματα καί οὐκ ἐπί τόν Θεόν ἐλπίδος.Ὁ γάρ ὑποκείμενα χρήματα ἔχων ἐπί τόν Θεόν ἐλπίζειν οὐ δύναται· καί τοῦτο δῆλον ἐξ ὧν ὁ Χριστός καί Θεός ἡμῶν εἶπεν· "Ὅπου, φησίν, ὁ θησαυρός ὑμῶν, ἐκεῖ καί ἡ καρδία ὑμῶν ἔσται". Ὁ οὖν μεταδιδούς τοῖς πᾶσιν ἐκ τῶν ἀποκειμένων αὐτῷ χρημάτων, μισθόν ὑπέρ αὐτῶν οὐ χρεωστεῖται λαβεῖν, ἀλλά καί ὑπόδικος μᾶλλόν ἐστι τῆς ἕως τότε ἀδίκου ἀποστερήσεως· οὐ μήν ἀλλά καί ὑπεύθυνος τῶν κατά καιρούς λιμῷ καί δίψει τόν βίον ἀπολειπόντων, οὕς αὐτός τότε δυνάμενος θρέψαι οὐκ ἔθρεψε, κατορύξας τά τῶν πενήτων καί ἐάσας αὐτούς τῷ (176) κρύει καί τῷ λιμῶ βιαίως ἀποθανεῖν, ὡς φονεύς τοσούτων ἀποδειχθείς, ὅσους θρέψαι ἠδύνατο.
Τούτων τοίνυν ἁπάντων τῶν ἐγκλημάτων τό κρίμα ἡμῖν ἀφείς ὁ ἀγαθός ∆εσπότης καί εὔσπλαγχνος, οὐχ ὡς ἀλλότρια κατέχοντας ἡμᾶς, ἀλλ᾿ ὡς οἰκεῖα ἡμῶν λογίζεται ταῦτα καί οὐ δεκαπλασίονα μόνον, ἀλλ᾿ ἑκατονταπλασίονα δοῦναι ἡμῖν ἐπαγγέλλεται, τοῖς ἐν ἱλαρότητι ταῦτα τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς διανέμουσιν. Ἱλαρότης δέ ἐστι τό μή ὡς οἰκεῖα λογίζεσθαι ταῦτα, ἀλλ᾿ ὡς ὑπό τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐγχειρισθέντα αὐτῷ εἰς οἰκονομίαν τῶν συνδούλων αὐτοῦ, καί ἀφθόνως ταῦτα μετά χαρᾶς καί μεγαλοψύχως σκορπίζειν, μή ἐκ λύπης ἤ ἐξ ἀνάγκης, ἄλλως τε δέ καί ἵνα μετά χαρᾶς τά ἀποθησαυρισθέντα κενώσωμεν ἐπ᾿ ἐλπίδι τῆς ἀληθινῆς ἐπαγγελίας, ἧς ἡμῖν ὁ Θεός ἐπηγγείλατο, ἑκατονταπλασίονα δοῦναι τόν μισθόν ὑπέρ τούτου. Εἰδώς γάρ ὁ Θεός ὅτι ὅλως ὅλοι τῇ τῶν χρημάτων ἐπιθυμίᾳ καί τῇ τοῦ πλούτου μανίᾳ κρατούμεθα καί δυσαποσπάστως ἔχομεν πρός αὐτά, καί οἱ τούτων πολυτρόπως ἀποστερούμενοι αὐτήν τήν ἑαυτῶν ζωήν ἀπολέγονται, τῷ καταλλήλῳ φαρμάκῳ ἐχρήσατο, ἐπαγγειλάμενος δοῦναι ἡμῖν, ὥσπερ εἴρηται, ὑπέρ ὧν κατακενοῦμεν εἰς τούς πένητας, ἑκατονταπλασίονα τόν μισθόν, ἵνα καί τοῦ ἐπ᾿ αὐτοῖς κρίματος τῆς πλεονεξίας ἐν πρώτοις ἀπαλλαγῶμεν, ἔπειτα καί τοῦ ἐπ᾿ αὐτά ἔχειν τήν πεποίθησιν
