my day, and he saw it and was glad." 5.105 This is Isaac, who unwillingly handed over to Jacob the blessing promised to him and to his father by God, saying: “Let nations serve you, and rulers bow down to you; and be lord over your brother, and may your father’s sons bow down to you. Cursed be he who curses you, and blessed be he who blesses you.” But we do not see all these things happening in the case of Jacob, but rather he himself, falling seven times to the ground, bowed down to Esau; and thirty kings reigned from Esau, before any king reigned in Israel, so that the blessings remain for the expected Lord Christ from them, to whom the whole purpose of divine Scripture looks. Marginal Note 5.106 And he, having become a co-heir of the gifts and promises of God and a type of the Lord Christ, who also himself, having received the blessing from his father, did not hand it over to the son he wished, but to whom God ordained it to be given. Glory to him who wisely ordains all things concerning man. 5.107 This Jacob, also a co-heir of the promises of God, himself looking for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God, that is, the heavenly Jerusalem, where Christ has entered “as a forerunner on our behalf,” to which state all the religion of the Christians looks, which the Lord Christ first of all inaugurated for us, a new and living way, which the great Jacob also foretells, referring to his own son Judah, blessing him, from whom also the Lord Jesus Christ of the promises and blessings appeared, saying thus: “Judah, your brothers shall praise you; your hands shall be on the neck of your enemies; your father's sons shall bow down before you. Judah is a lion's whelp; from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as a young lion. Who will rouse him? The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a ruler from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs; and he is the expectation of nations. Binding his foal to the vine, and his donkey's colt to the choice vine, he will wash his garment in wine, and his robe in the blood of grapes. His eyes are gladdening from wine, and his teeth whiter than milk.” 5.108 And his father's sons did not bow down to this one, but on the contrary he himself bowed down to Joseph even after his father's death. It is clear therefore that all this prophecy had its fulfillment in the Lord Christ born from him according to the flesh, representing both his power and royalty, and the passion and the blessed resurrection from the passion. Marginal Note 5.109 And this Jacob, counted with the two as the third patriarch, not having married the woman he himself wished to marry from the beginning, I mean Leah, he laid down the blessings and the promises to the fourth born from her, that is to Judah, so that it is clear from this that the blessing did not run to just anyone by chance, but through those from whom the Lord Christ appeared according to the flesh, the author of the second state. And it is possible to learn also from Judah himself that not from his own wife, but from his daughter-in-law Tamar his seed is genealogized, from which also the Lord of the blessings appeared. 5.110 Furthermore. Most clearly the patriarchs, having received such great promises from God that in them and in their seed all the nations would be blessed, and likewise: “To you I will give this land and to your seed,” and though they themselves received not even a foot's pace, but dwelt in tents, the most faithful were clearly looking for and hoping for some other state, through which they would receive the promises. Wherefore also at the time of dying, each of them handed over the blessing to whomever God had ordained. Wherefore the Scripture, as if treasuring up the fathers, cried out: “And he was gathered to his fathers,” saying about each as if: All together will one day receive, being treasured up for the future state. Φανερώτατα οἱ πατριάρχαι τηλικαύτας ἐπαγγελίας λαβόντες παρὰ Θεοῦ ἐνευλογεῖσθαι ἐν αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐν τῷ σπέρματι αὐτῶν πάντα τὰ ἔθνη, ὁμοίως καί· "Ὑμῖν δώσω τὴν γῆν ταύτην καὶ τῷ σπέρματι ὑμῶν", καὶ μηδὲ βῆμα ποδὸς αὐτοὶ λαβόντες, ἀλλ' ἐν σκηναῖς κατοικοῦντες, δῆλοι ἦσαν οἱ πιστότατοι, ἐκδεχόμενοι καὶ ἐλπίζοντες ἑτέραν τινὰ κατάστασιν, δι' ἧς ἀπολήψονται τὰς ἐπαγγελίας. Ὅθεν καὶ ἐν καιρῷ τοῦ θνῄσκειν, παρεδίδου ἕκαστος αὐτῶν τὴν εὐλογίαν ᾧπερ ὁ Θεὸς ᾠκονόμησεν. Ὅθεν ἡ Γραφή, ὡς θησαυρίζουσα τοὺς πατέρας, ἐβόα· "Καὶ προσετέθη πρὸς τοὺς πατέρας αὐτοῦ", περὶ ἑκάστου λέγουσα ὡσανεί· Πάντες ὁμοῦ ποτε ἀπολήψονται θησαυριζόμενοι εἰς τὴν μέλλουσαν κατάστασιν.
