Ligystinoi Campanians Celtiberians Iberians Gauls Aquitanians Illyrians Basantes Cannio Cartanoi Lusitanians Vaccaei British Scots Spaniards. 113.6 And their islands are Britain, Sicily, Euboea, Rhodes, Chios, Lesbos, Cythera 113.7 Zacynthus, Cephalenia, Ithaca, Corcyra, Cyprus. And if anywhere the name of a nation or an island is assigned twice, in the lot of one and again of another, according to the common borders or according to the colonies that arose from time to time or according to the seizure by Ham, who was greedy and took parts of Shem, let no one be surprised or doubt it. 114.1 Since, therefore, these nations came to be in this way from the three sons of Noah and the world was divided in three ways among the three sons, as I said before, an oath was demanded from them by their father that no one 114.2 should encroach upon his brother’s lot; and they said in the oath that the one who transgressed the command of the oath would be utterly destroyed, and all his 114.3 seed. Since, therefore, Palestine and all its neighboring lands fell within the lot of Shem, and Canaan son of Ham, being greedy, later came to the land of the Palestinians, that is Judea, 114.4 and seized it, God was patient, giving them time for repentance, so that those of Ham might repent and give back their proper inheritance to those of Shem, but they did not repent, but wished to fill up their measure, 114.5 - then God, being just, after many generations later, avenges the transgression of the oath; for thus it was necessary for the measure of the 114.6 Amorites to be filled. For Shem begat Arphaxad; and Ham begat Canaan, and Canaan after the act of greediness begat the Amorite and the Girgashite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Arkite and 114.7 the Arvadite and the Sidonian. Therefore, the generations are thus numbered until the vengeance for Shem: Shem, who was wronged, begat Arphaxad, as we said; and Arphaxad begat Cainan, Cainan Sala, Sala Eber, and the tower-building takes place; Eber begat Peleg, and the division of the earth and of languages takes place; Peleg begat Reu, Reu begat Serug, Serug begat Nahor, Nahor begat Terah, Terah begat Abraham, Abraham begat Isaac, Isaac begat Jacob who was called Israel, from whom are the Israelites, Jacob begat Judah, Judah begat Perez, Perez begat Hezron, Hezron begat Ram, Ram begat Amminadab, Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon. This is the generation of those from Shem 114.8 begotten. Therefore God avenges these, who were wronged by the sons of Ham and deprived of their own place, by utterly destroying those of Canaan according to their oath, and the seed of Shem receives back its own land. God therefore did not act unjustly, allotting what is just to each part; "for God is not mocked," as I said before. 115.1 Therefore in the exodus, God, preparing for himself a congregation, says to Moses, "take off the sandals from your feet." For everyone 115.2 who is about to approach pure baths first takes them off. Since therefore much time had passed and everyone "has gone astray in his own way," and this congregation remained in its own evils, God did not yet reveal "the bath" "of regeneration," but for many years it was postponed, but later to the holy church the all-holy 115.3 bath he revealed; in Moses taking off sandals, in the prophets stripping off the outer tunic, leaving only a loincloth for Jeremiah, in John changing all the garments of the world, he transformed them from camel's hair, and in the Savior himself and his disciples he stripped off "the fashion of the world," and from above, from the heavens, after the cleansing of the waters, he put on the garment "of fire and of spirit." 115.4 But those seeing
