that drunkenness, but the one in the bosom of the patriarch after that extreme poverty and famine. But lest we extend our discourse to great length, it is sufficient to condense the teaching to this point, and to exhort your charity, not to pursue the wide gate, nor the broad way, nor to seek comfort by every means, but considering the end of each, to flee the one, considering what befell this rich man, and to pursue the narrow gate and the afflicted way, so that we may be able to arrive at the place of rest after the affliction here. Flee, therefore, I beseech you, the satanic spectacles, and the harmful sight of the hippodromes. For on account of those who are dragged away and walk towards the broad way, we were moved to say these things, so that having learned, they might abandon that one, and having walked the afflicted way, I mean that of virtue, they might be deemed worthy of the patriarch's bosom, just like Lazarus, and all together being freed from the Gehenna of fire, we may enjoy those ineffable good things, which eye has not seen, and ear has not heard; may it be that we all attain them, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father be the glory, together with the Holy Spirit, unto the ages of ages. ἐκείνην καὶ τὴν μέθην, τὸν δὲ ἐν τοῖς κόλποις τοῦ πατριάρχου μετὰ τὴν πενίαν ἐκείνην τὴν ἐσχάτην καὶ τὸν λιμόν. Ἀλλ' ἵνα μὴ εἰς πολὺ μῆκος ἐκτείνωμεν τὸν λόγον, ἀρκεῖ μέχρι τούτου συστεῖλαι τὴν διδασκαλίαν, καὶ παρακαλέσαι τὴν ὑμετέραν ἀγάπην, μὴ τὴν πλατεῖαν μεταδιώκειν πύλην, μηδὲ τὴν εὐρύχωρον ὁδὸν, μηδὲ τὴν ἄνεσιν ἐκ παντὸς τρόπου ζητεῖν, ἀλλὰ τὸ τέλος ἑκατέρας ἐννοοῦντας, ταύτην μὲν φεύγειν, λογιζομένους τὰ κατειληφότα τὸν πλούσιον τοῦτον, τὴν δὲ στενὴν πύλην μεταδιώκειν καὶ τὴν τεθλιμμένην ὁδὸν, ἵνα εἰς τὸ τῆς ἀνέσεως χωρίον μετὰ τὴν ἐνθάδε θλῖψιν καταντῆσαι δυνηθῶμεν. Φεύγετε τοίνυν, παρακαλῶ, τὰς σατανικὰς θεωρίας, καὶ τὴν ἐπιβλαβῆ τῶν ἱπποδρομιῶν θέαν. ∆ιὰ γὰρ τοὺς ὑποσυρέντας καὶ πρὸς τὴν εὐρύχωρον ὁδὸν βαδίσαντας, ταῦτα εἰπεῖν προήχθημεν, ἵνα μαθόντες, ἐκείνην μὲν καταλίπωσι, τὴν δὲ τεθλιμμένην ὁδεύσαντες, τὴν τῆς ἀρετῆς λέγω, τῶν κόλπων τοῦ πατριάρχου ὁμοίως τῷ Λαζάρῳ ἀξιωθῶσι, καὶ τῆς γεέννης τοῦ πυρὸς κοινῇ πάντες ἐλευθερωθέντες, τῶν ἀποῤῥήτων ἐκείνων ἀγαθῶν, ἃ ὀφθαλμὸς οὐκ εἶδε, καὶ οὖς οὐκ ἤκουσεν, ἀπολαύσωμεν· ὧν γένοιτο πάντας ἡμᾶς ἐπιτυχεῖν, χάριτι καὶ φιλανθρωπίᾳ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, μεθ' οὗ τῷ Πατρὶ ἡ δόξα, ἅμα τῷ ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι, εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων.
