and being mad, and being darkened, to speak by the spirit within him. Secondly, that the one who prophesies, in naming Jesus Lord, is true; but he who does not do this, but anathematizes, is a liar. “Now there are diversities of gifts.” Having given the difference, he begins to console those having the lesser gift. It is as if he were to say: Why are you disheartened, because you did not receive as much as the other? but consider that it is a gift, and not a debt, and you will console your pain. For this reason, “diversities of gifts,” he said, and not of signs, nor of wonders, persuading him by the name of the gift, not only to grieve, but also to be thankful. Do you see that he shows no difference in the gifts, revealing the equal honor of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. “but the same Spirit.” Even if you are lesser in measure, he says, yet from that same one, the greater gift was also received. “And there are diversities of administrations, and the same Lord; and there are diversities of workings.” Gift, and working, and administration are the same thing, but there is a difference only of names; since the things are the same. For what is a gift, this is also an administration; 95.665 and what is an administration, this is also a working. For “I have fulfilled my ministry,” he says; and, “I magnify my ministry.” And to Timothy, “I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God, which is in you.” And to the Galatians: “For He who worked for Peter for the circumcision, worked also for me for the Gentiles.” Do you see that there is no difference of gift, and of administration, and of working. See how everywhere he makes this addition, saying, “in the same Spirit;” and, “according to the same Spirit.” For he knows that the consolation from this is great. So that if you are zealous to show this, that you have the Spirit, of this you have the proof from being baptized. But to the unbeliever this will in no way be manifest, except from the signs, so that even from this again, there is no small consolation. For even if the gifts are different, but the indication is one, whether much greater, or little, it is likewise to him. “But it is the same God who works all things in all. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for what is profitable.” Lest anyone say, “Even if it is the same Lord, and the same Spirit, and the same God, but I have received less;” he says, “It was thus profitable.” When therefore, he says, both the giver is one, and what was given to you is a gift, and the manifestation comes from this, and this is more profitable, do not grieve as though despised. For he has not done this dishonoring you, but considering what is profitable. And he calls “manifestation of the Spirit,” the receiving of one of the gifts. For to me, the believer, he who has the Spirit is evident. “For to one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom; and to another the word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit. To another faith in the same Spirit; and to another gifts of healing in the one Spirit; and to another workings of powers; and to another prophecy; and to another discernings of spirits.” What is the word of wisdom? That someone be wise himself, and be able to make others so. And what is the word of knowledge? To have knowledge and to know the mysteries, but not to be able to teach, nor easily to bring forth to another what they are. And what is faith? Not that of doctrines, but that of signs, concerning which the apostles said, “Increase our faith;” and concerning which it is said, “If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed.” For this is the mother of signs. And it is one thing to have workings of powers, and another to have gifts of healing. For he who has gifts of healing, only heals; but he who possesses workings of powers, not only heals, but also punishes; just as the Apostle blinded the magician; just as Peter took the life of Ananias. And discerning of spirits is, to know who is spiritual, and who is not spiritual; who is the prophet, and who is the deceiver. 95.668 “To another kinds of tongues; and to another the interpretation of tongues. But all these things the one and the same Spirit works.” For one knew what he himself was saying, but was not able to interpret for another. But another possessed both these things. And this seemed to be a great gift, since the apostles also received it first. Since, therefore, this especially puffed them up, the first unto the

Εἰ γὰρ καὶ τὰ χαρίσματα διάφορα, ἀλλ' ἡ ἔνδειξις μία, κἂν πολὺ μεῖζον, ἢ ὀλίγον, ὁμοίως εἰς αὐτόν. «Ὁ δὲ αὐτός ἐστι Θεὸς, ὁ ἐνεργῶν τὰ πάντα ἐν πᾶσιν. Ἑκάστῳ δὲ δίδοται ἡ φανέρωσις τοῦ Πνεύματος πρὸς τὸ συμφέρον.» Ἵνα μή τις λέγῃ, Εἰ καὶ αὐτὸς Κύριος, καὶ τὸ αὐτὸ Πνεῦμα, καὶ ὁ αὐτὸς Θεὸς, ἀλλ' ἐγὼ ἔλαττον εἴληφα· φησὶν, Οὕτω συνέφερεν. Αὕτη γὰρ ἡ μήτηρ τῶν σημείων ἐστίν. Ἄλλο δέ ἐστιν ἐνεργήματα δυνάμεων, καὶ χαρίσματα ἰαμάτων ἔχειν.
