he resettled Isaurians into Thrace. And he deemed John the Scythian and the other John, the Hunchback, worthy of the consulate and of great honor; and to Euphemius the bishop he declared through Eusebius the magister: "your prayers, O great one, have blackened your friends." And the emperor, having gathered the resident bishops, brought charges against Euphemius, and they, to gratify the emperor, voted for his excommunication and deposition. And the emperor appointed Macedonius bishop of Constantinople, who was then treasurer of the same church. The people, however, rioted on account of Euphemius; and they ran to the hippodrome in procession, but they were not strong enough to accomplish anything, as the emperor was eager to win badly. But Macedonius, ill-advisedly persuaded by Anastasius, subscribed to the Henotikon of Zeno. Macedonius, bishop of Constantinople, 16 years. 6. 2. 5. 1. 2. 7. 8. In this year Anastasius sent Euphemius into exile to Euchaita. And he asked to receive a promise through Macedonius, to remain unharmed while being led away. And Macedonius, being permitted to give the promise, upon entering the baptistery to meet Euphemius, ordered the archdeacon to remove the omophorion from him, and thus having entered simply to Euphemius and having borrowed money, he gave it to Euphemius, so that he was praised by many for both reasons. For he was ascetic and holy, as he had been raised by Gennadius, of whom he was also the nephew. In the same year, upon the death of Athanasius, bishop of Alexandria, John the Monk, a presbyter and steward, surnamed Hemoula, was ordained in his place. Anastasius, bishop of Rome, 2 years. John, bishop of Alexandria, 9 years. 7. 3. 1. 2. 3. 1. 9. 141 In this year, when an incursion of the so-called Scenite Arabs occurred in Euphratensis in a place called Bithrapsa, first of Syria, Eugenius, the general of those parts, having drawn up against them, a man excellent in word and deed, won the battle. The defeated were allies of the Persians from the tribe of Naaman the phylarch. Then also Romanus, commander of the force in Palestine, an excellent man, by counsel and strategy captured in war Ogarus, the son of Arethas of the so-called Thalabane, along with a great number of captives. And before that battle, Romanus also defeated and put to flight another Scenite, Gabalas by name, who had raided Palestine before his arrival. Then also the island of Iotabe, situated in the gulf of the Red Sea and subject to not a few taxes under the emperor of the Romans, but which had meanwhile been seized by the Scenite Arabs, Romanus liberated by fierce battles, again giving it to the Roman merchants to inhabit the island autonomously and to export cargoes from the Indies, and to bring in the appointed tribute to the emperor. 8. 4. 2. 3. 4. 2. 10. In this year Macedonius, by the will of the emperor, hastened to unite the monasteries of the capital, which were in schism on account of the Henotikon of Zeno. But being unable to do this, he advised the emperor that the resident bishops should convene and confirm in writing the things that had been well defined at Chalcedon, which also happened by means of a written act. And he urged the monasteries toward union, especially the monastery of Dius and of Bassianus and of the Acoemetae and of Matrona, which were especially in schism from those accepting the Henotikon of Zeno and readily endured exile. When they therefore resisted, Macedonius resolved, according to their own choice, to leave them alone, or to raise a persecution 142 against them. And the holy Matrona, while still alive and not in communion with the nuns with her on account of the Henotikon of Zeno, demonstrated many wondrous things, when Chrysaorius, a deacon of the church, was compelling her. And a certain other named Sophia, eminent among nuns, having suffered much, showed great endurance. And Theuderic the Afer, having an orthodox deacon very much loved by him,
