of him, and he is a defender of the salvations of his Christ. Clearly, then, in these things the prophecy made mention of Christ and of those saved by him, opportunely describing all by the one person of David. For just as, it says, he saved him when he prayed, so, it says, will he also be the strength of all his own people. Save your people, and bless your inheritance, and shepherd them and lift them up forever. And what Christ's inheritance is, is shown in the second psalm: for "Ask," it says, "and I will give you the nations for your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for your possession." You would not err in saying that the God-loving and prophets and righteous men among the former people also became the inheritance of Christ, and have partaken of his salvation. For it is not fitting to declare the multitudes and those who unworthily associate with the Church of God to be his people, but only those who live pleasingly to him, concerning whom he would say: "And I will be their God, and they shall be my people." - And shepherd them, and lift them up forever. And he shepherds them here, laying down his life for them, as he says in the Gospels: "The 23.252 good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep;" and again, "My sheep hear my voice;" and again, "I will be with you until the end of the age;" and at the opportune time, having lifted them on high, he will deem them worthy of the heavenly kingdom. A PSALM OF DAVID 28. Of the departing of the tabernacle. Bring to the Lord, O sons of God, bring to the Lord young rams. Bring to the Lord glory and honor. Bring to the Lord glory to his name. Worship the Lord in his holy court. I consider these things to be equivalent in meaning to what is said in the ninety-fifth psalm concerning the calling of the nations in this way: "Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, bless his name, proclaim his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all peoples. For the Lord is great and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods;" to which is added in sequence: "Bring to the Lord glory to his name. Take up sacrifices and enter into his courts. Worship the Lord in his holy court." In which the word, having proclaimed beforehand the evangelical grace poured out upon all the nations throughout the whole world, and having made mention of the new song, that is, of the new Covenant, then commands to bring to the Lord glory and honor, and what follows. And he urges that these things be brought not by the Jews, but by the families of the nations, or according to the other interpreters, and according to the Hebrew accuracy, by the kindreds of the peoples. These things, therefore, were clearly prophesied concerning the nations in the ninety-fifth psalm; but in the psalm at hand, the word commands the sons of the rams to offer the same things to the Lord; whom I think differ in no way from the families of the nations, or the kindreds of the peoples. For it is not the rams themselves who are commanded to offer the prescribed things, but the sons of the rams. And I say this according to the Hebrew memory, in which is not found: "Bring to the Lord, O sons of God." For which reason it is also marked with an obelus by the Seventy, as not being found either in the Hebrew or among the other interpreters. But if one must also consider the edition of the Seventy, I say that the word commands the sons to bring to the Lord not rams, but young rams; and glory and honor and the things said in addition; which indeed from the comparison with the ninety-fifth psalm I would say are prophesied concerning the conversion of the nations. We would not err that the sons of God here
