unknown dead and unfaithful. 117.1 But lest “through ink and paper” we make lengthy the testimonies against these men, so as not to weary the readers, for the Sabellians themselves, along with the other testimonies, the testimony of the Jordan will suffice, 117.2 as I have already said. For the Son truly appears at the Jordan, God having become man, not undergoing a change but taking on flesh, not by the seed of a man but having assumed a body from the holy virgin, conceived through the Holy Spirit, a perfect body, 117.3 that is, a perfect man in soul and body. So God and man came to John at the Jordan, being one and the same Son and Christ and Lord; and the Father cries from above, testifying to the Son who was at the Jordan, “This is my beloved Son”; 117.4 and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in the form of a dove as he came into the waters, in order to show them to be pure for the sake of those who would be baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. 117.5 And for the Arians, along with the things said before, it will suffice that the Son said, “I am in the Father and the Father is in me”; for here he showed the equality 117.6 of the Son with the Father and his genuineness. And for the offspring of the Arians who blaspheme the Holy Spirit, two testimonies already set forth will suffice, along with the other testimonies, one indeed 117.7 from Daniel, which is as follows: in the furnace of fire Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, while praising God, include with themselves the whole creation of God and say, “Bless the Lord, all you works of the Lord”; and they numbered the heavens and angels and moon and sun and powers, and earth and sea and all things in them, and nowhere did they number the Son and Holy Spirit with the creatures. And the Seraphim equally hallow the Trinity, saying “holy” not once nor twice nor a fourth time, but three times. 118.1 And let Peter again refute these men, rebuking Ananias and his company and saying, “you have tested the 118.2 Holy Spirit”; and he says, “You have not lied to man, but to God.” And the apostle knows, as we have often said, that the Spirit is not alien to God, saying, “it searches even the depths of God”; but that which is not from the substance of God cannot search the depths 118.3 of God. But we know the Father as Father, the Son as Son, the Holy Spirit as Holy Spirit, a Trinity in unity. For there is one unity of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, one substance, one lordship, one 118.4 will, one church, one baptism, one faith. And let those who are against the holy virgin of Christ and pure bride, that is, 118.5 our mother the holy church, cease *. For her children received from the holy fathers, that is, the holy apostles, the faith to guard, and at the same time to hand it down and declare it to their own children. 118.6 Of whom you also are sons, most honored brothers, and hand down this teaching to your own children. 118.7 Saying these things thus and similar things from the divine scriptures *, do not cease, you faithful and orthodox, to confirm both yourselves and your hearers, teaching, preparing the way, catechizing this holy faith of the catholic church, as the holy and only virgin of God received it from the holy 118.8 apostles of the Lord, to guard it. And so you ought not only to announce † to your own sons in the Lord that each of the catechumens who are about to approach the holy font believes, but also to teach expressly, as she is the same mother of all, of you and of us, to say: 118.9 We believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and 118.10 earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, born of
