prophesying with a true word the things that would happen, he placed in them the choice of the way of life according to him. Such also were the things concerning what was about to happen to them on account of his name, in which, foretelling, he testified that they would be brought before governors, and would reach even kings, and would endure all kinds of punishments, for no evil deed, nor for any other reasonable cause, but this whole thing on account of his name. 3.5.78 which even to this day we see being fulfilled ... to be amazed at the prophecy; for the confession of the name of Jesus is accustomed to kindle the wrath of the rulers. 3.5.79 For even if nothing evil has been done by the one confessing Christ, they nevertheless punish him, torturing him on account of his name as if he were worse than all unholy doers; but if someone should renounce the name and deny being one of Christ's disciples, he is immediately set free, even if he is found guilty of ten thousand offenses. 3.5.80 And why must I collect countless things while trying to describe the character of the apostles of our Savior, when the things already said are sufficient for proof of the matter at hand? Adding these things to what has been said, I will pass on to the other band of slanderers. 3.5.81 Matthew the apostle in his former life did not originate from a respectable occupation, but from those occupied with tax-collecting and greed. None of the other evangelists revealed this, not his fellow apostle John, nor Luke, nor Mark, but Matthew himself, exposing his own life, and becoming his own accuser. 3.5.82 Listen, then, how he expressly makes mention of himself by name in the gospel written by him ... the manner: "And as Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man sitting at the tax office, named Matthew, and he said to him, Follow me; and he arose and followed him. And it came to pass, as he was reclining in the house, that behold, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples." And again, proceeding next, while enumerating the catalogue of the disciples, he adds to himself the name of tax collector. 3.5.83 He says, then: "Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector." 3.5.84 Thus Matthew, through an excess of modesty, indicating the love of truth of his own character, both called himself a tax collector, not hiding his former life, and listed himself second to his partner. 3.5.85 For being yoked with Thomas, as Peter with Andrew, and James with John, and Philip with Bartholomew, he places Thomas before himself, honoring his fellow apostle as better, while the other evangelists have done the opposite. Listen, then, to Luke, how when he mentioned Matthew, he does not call him a tax collector, nor does he subordinate him to Thomas, but knowing him to be better, he listed him first, adding Thomas second, 3.5.86 just as Mark also has done. And his words are as follows: "And when it was day, he called his disciples, and choosing from them twelve, whom he also named apostles: Simon, whom he also called Peter, and Andrew his brother, James and John and Philip and Bartholomew and Matthew and Thomas." 3.5.87 Thus Luke honored Matthew, according to what was delivered to him by "those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word." And you would find John to be similar to Matthew; 3.5.88 for in his epistles he does not even make mention of his own name, or calls himself an elder, but nowhere an apostle or an evangelist; and in the gospel, having indicated "the one whom Jesus loved" he did not reveal himself by name. And yet Peter did not even proceed to the writing of a gospel, because of an excess of reverence. 3.5.89 Mark, his acquaintance and

ἀληθεῖ λόγῳ τὰ συμβησόμενα θεσπίζων, τὴν αἵρεσιν τῆς κατ' αὐτὸν πολιτείας εἰς αὐτοὺς ἐνετίθετο. τοιαῦτα δὲ ἦν καὶ τὰ περὶ τῶν μελλόντων διὰ τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ συμβήσεσθαι αὐτοῖς, ἐν οἷς προλέγων ἐμαρτύρατο, ὅτι καὶ ἐπὶ ἡγεμόνας ἀχθήσονται, καὶ μέχρι βασιλέων φθάσουσιν, καὶ παντοίας ὑπομενοῦσι τιμωρίας, δι' οὐδὲν μὲν φαῦλον οὐδὲ δι' ἑτέραν εὔλογον αἰτίαν, αὐτὸ δὲ τοῦτο ὅλον διὰ τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ. 3.5.78 ὃ καὶ εἰσέτι δεῦρο θεωροῦντας ἐνεργούμενον ... καταπλαγῆναι τὴν πρόρρησιν· ἡ γὰρ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ὀνόματος ὁμολογία τοὺς θυμοὺς εἴωθεν ἐκκαίειν τῶν ἀρχόντων. 3.5.79 κἂν μηδὲν γὰρ φαῦλον ᾖ πεπραγμένον τῷ τὸν Χριστὸν ὁμολογοῦντι, κολάζουσιν ὅμως αἰκιζόμενοι διὰ τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ ὡς πάντων ἀνοσιουργῶν χαλεπωτέρους· εἰ δ' ἐξομόσαιτό τις τὴν προσηγορίαν καὶ ἀρνηθείη μὴ εἶναι τῶν Χριστοῦ μαθητῶν, ἀφεῖται παραχρῆμα ἐλεύθερος, κἂν μυρίοις ἔνοχος ἁλίσκηται πλημμελήμασιν. 3.5.80 καὶ τί με χρὴ μυρία συναγαγεῖν τὸ τῶν ἀποστόλων τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν διαγράφειν ἦθος πειρώμενον, ἀρκούντων καὶ τῶν εἰρημένων εἰς ἀπόδειξιν τοῦ προκειμένου; οἷς ἔτι ταῦτα προσθεὶς ἐπὶ τὸ ἕτερον στῖφος τῶν συκοφαντῶν μεταβήσομαι. 3.5.81 Ματθαῖος ὁ ἀπόστολος τὸν πρότερον βίον οὐκ ἀπὸ σεμνῆς διατριβῆς ὡρμᾶτο, ἐκ δὲ τῶν ἀμφὶ τὰς τελωνείας καὶ πλεονεξίας σχολαζόντων. τοῦτο οὐδεὶς τῶν λοιπῶν εὐαγγελιστῶν ἐδήλωσεν, οὐχ ὁ συναπόστολος αὐτοῦ Ἰωάννης, οὐδέ γε Λουκᾶς, οὐδὲ Μάρκος, αὐτὸς δὲ Ματθαῖος τὸν ἑαυτοῦ στηλιτεύων βίον, καὶ κατήγορος αὐτὸς ἑαυτοῦ γιγνόμενος. 3.5.82 ἐπάκουσον γοῦν ὅπως διαρρήδην ἐπ' ὀνόματος αὐτοῦ μέμνηται ἐν τῷ πρὸς αὐτοῦ γραφέντι εὐαγγελίῳ ... τὸν τρόπον· «καὶ παράγων ἐκεῖθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶδεν ἄνθρωπον καθήμενον ἐπὶ τὸ τελώνιον, Ματθαῖον ὀνόματι, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, ἀκολούθει μοι· καὶ ἀναστὰς ἠκολούθησεν αὐτῷ. καὶ ἐγένετο ἀνακειμένου αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ, καὶ ἰδοὺ πολλοὶ τελῶναι καὶ ἁμαρτωλοὶ συνανέκειντο τῷ Ἰησοῦ καὶ τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ». καὶ πάλιν προϊὼν ἑξῆς τόν τε κατάλογον τῶν μαθητῶν ἐξαριθμούμενος, αὐτὸς ἑαυτῷ τὸ τοῦ τελώνου ὄνομα προστίθησιν. 3.5.83 λέγει δ' οὖν· «τῶν δὲ δώδεκα ἀποστόλων τὰ ὀνόματά ἐστιν ταῦτα· πρῶτος Σίμων ὁ λεγόμενος Πέτρος, καὶ Ἀνδρέας ὁ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ, Ἰάκωβος ὁ τοῦ Ζεβεδαίου, καὶ Ἰωάννης ὁ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ, Φίλιππος καὶ Βαρθολομαῖος, Θωμᾶς καὶ Ματθαῖος ὁ τελώνης». 3.5.84 Οὕτως μὲν ὁ Ματθαῖος δι' ὑπερβολὴν ἐπιεικείας τὸ φιλάληθες ὑποφαίνων τοῦ ἰδίου τρόπου καὶ τελώνην ἑαυτὸν ἀπεκάλει, μὴ ἐπικρύπτων τὸν πρότερον ἑαυτοῦ βίον καὶ τοῦ συζύγου δεύτερον ἑαυτὸν κατέλεγεν. 3.5.85 συνεζευγμένος γοῦν τῷ Θωμᾷ, ὡς Πέτρος Ἀνδρέᾳ, καὶ Ἰάκωβος τῷ Ἰωάννῃ, καὶ Φίλιππος Βαρθολομαίῳ, προτάττει ἑαυτοῦ τὸν Θωμᾶν, προτιμῶν ὡς κρείττονα τὸν συναπόστολον, τῶν λοιπῶν εὐαγγελιστῶν τοὐναντίον πεποιηκότων. ἄκουε γοῦν Λουκᾶ, πῶς τοῦ Ματθαίου μνημονεύσας οὐ τελώνην ὀνομάζει, οὐδ' ὑποτάττει τῷ Θωμᾷ, κρείττονα δὲ αὐτὸν εἰδὼς πρῶτον αὐτὸν κατέλεξεν, δεύτερον τὸν Θωμᾶν ἐπαγαγών, 3.5.86 ὥσπερ καὶ ὁ Μάρκος πεποίηκεν. ἔχουσιν δὲ αὐτοῦ αἱ λέξεις οὕτως· «καὶ ὅτε ἡμέρα ἐγένετο, ἐφώνησεν τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐκλεξάμενος ἐξ αὐτῶν δώδεκα, οὓς καὶ ἀποστόλους ὠνόμασεν, Σίμωνα, ὃν καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Πέτρον, καὶ Ἀνδρέαν τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ, Ἰάκωβον καὶ Ἰωάννην καὶ Φίλιππον καὶ Βαρθολομαῖον καὶ Ματθαῖον καὶ Θωμᾶν». 3.5.87 οὕτως μὲν τὸν Ματθαῖον ὁ Λουκᾶς ἐτίμησεν, καθ' ἃ παρέδωκαν αὐτῷ «οἱ ἀπ' ἀρχῆς αὐτόπται καὶ ὑπηρέται γενόμενοι τοῦ λόγου».
