a senator who went up with Augustus in Rome; and he died, leaving his income to his own city so that for thirty days every five years there might be held in it, during the month Hyperberetaios 225, contests of recitations and of thymelic and scenic performers, of all athletes and a hippic contest. And there arrived in Antioch during his second visit the son-in-law of the same Augustus, Agrippa, and he cleared out the mounds of earth from the old hippodrome which it had from former fears; and he himself watched the varied spectacle; and having marvelled, he departed from there. And formerly Quintus Marcius Rex of the Romans had built the same old hippodrome and the old palace from his own funds, when he came down to Antioch of Syria to Philip the club-footed, the Macedonian, who was ruling in Antioch, to impose upon him to pay tribute to the Romans. The same most divine Augustus became the first and sole king and hierophant of the Romans; and he styled himself thus, Augustus Caesar Octavianus Tropaiochos Sebastos Krataios Imperator, which is autokrator. And the same Augustus reigned in all 56 years. And in appearance he was of moderate height, slender, with straight hair, with fine eyes, with a fine nose. And during his reign he built the temple of Zeus in Rome, renewing also the Capitol, making both of them formidable structures. 226 In the 39th year and tenth month of his reign he issued a decree, proclaiming that all the land that had come under him and which the Romans formerly held should be registered, during the second consulship of Agrippa and Donatus. And all the land under the Romans was registered by Eumenes and Attalus, Roman senators. for he had great fear; for he was very wrathful. And after the 41st year and sixth month of his reign had passed, on the 25th of the month Dystros, at the second hour of the day, on a Sunday, the archangel Gabriel announced the good news in the city of Nazareth to the holy virgin and Theotokos Mary, during the consulship of Quinius and Longinus, while Utillius, who had also recently been promoted by Augustus Caesar, was governor of Syria. BOOK 10. THE TIMES OF THE REIGN OF AUGUSTUS AND THE INCARNATION OF GOD. In the 42nd year and 4th month of the reign of the same Augustus, our Lord and God Jesus Christ was born on the 8th day before the Kalends of January, on the 25th of the month of December, at the seventh hour of the day, in a city of Judaea named Bethlehem, which is near Jerusalem, in the year which is called 42 according to Antioch the Great, when Cyrenius, of consular rank, was governor of Syria, and when the same Octavianus and Silvanus were consuls, and while Herod the king was toparch, that is, was ruling, Judaea. Therefore, from Adam until Phalek, son of Eber, are reckoned 2533 years,
and from Phalek until the 42nd year of the reign of Augus- 228 tus Caesar, 2967 years, so that there are reckoned from Adam the first-formed until the birth in the flesh of our Lord Jesus Christ and the 42nd year of the reign of the same Augustus Caesar, 5500 years. And for the rest, our Lord and God associated with men on the earth, as is recorded in the scriptures, for 33 years, so that it comes to be from Adam until the birth in the flesh and crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ, 5533 years. For Phalek, according to the prophetic voice of Moses, is said to be the halfway point of the time of the future coming of Christ. For just as He formed man on the sixth day, as Moses set forth, having arranged this also in his records, "and one day of the Lord is
