is called together to the hearing by this lofty proclamation. What watchtower of the earth has risen so high above all, 29.433 that from its vantage point one might see all the nations, and with the eye embrace the whole world? Who is so loud-voiced a herald, as to shout audibly to so many ears at once? What place is able to receive those who are assembling? And how great is the teacher and of what sort in wisdom, so as to discover teachings worthy of so great a Church? Wait a little, and you will learn that what follows is worthy of the promise. For the one who calls the assembly and summons all by the proclamation is the Paraclete, the Spirit of truth, gathering through prophets and apostles those who are being saved; since of them, *Their sound has gone out into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world*; for this reason he says: Hear, all you nations, and all you who dwell in the world. For this reason also the Church is gathered from all sorts of pursuits, so that no one may be left outside of the benefit. For there are three pairs of those who are called, in which the whole race of men is included: for nations are those who inhabit the world; earth-born and sons of men; rich and poor. Whom, then, has he left outside the hearing? Those who are strangers to the faith were called through the nations. Those who are in the Church, are those who inhabit the world. The earth-born are those who mind earthly things, and cling to the desires of the flesh. The sons of men are those who take some care and practice of reason; for the rational faculty is proper to man. Rich and poor have their own property known from the outset; the one exceeding the possession of necessities, the others being in want of them. But since the physician of souls came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance, he first placed in the calling in each pair that which was condemned. For the nations are worse than those who inhabit the world; but nevertheless they are preferred in the call, so that those who are sick might first receive the benefit from the physician. Again, the earth-born were placed before the sons of men; and the rich before the poor. The desperate class, and the one for whom salvation is difficult, is called before the poor. For such is the physician's philanthropy to the weaker ones; he imparts the benefit to them first. And at the same time the fellowship of the call is a gatherer of peace, so that those who until now were opposed to one another by their pursuits, might through the Church become accustomed to one another in love. For let the rich man know that he is called by a proclamation of equal honor to the poor man. For, he says, rich and poor are together. Leaving outside your superiority toward the more needy, and the arrogance from wealth, thus 29.436 enter into the Church of God. Therefore let neither the rich man be arrogant toward the poor, nor let the poor man cower before the power of the wealthy; neither let the sons of men despise the earth-born, nor let the earth-born again be alienated from them. And let the nations become accustomed to those who inhabit the world, and let those who inhabit the world receive the strangers to the covenants through love. My mouth will speak wisdom, and the meditation of my heart, understanding. Since, according to the Apostle, *With the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation,* and the working of both in these things produces perfection; for this reason the word has included both in the same, both the working of the mouth, and the meditation of the heart. For if the good is not first laid up in the heart, how can one who has not possessed it in secret bring forth the treasure through the mouth? And if one having the good things of the heart does not make them public by word, it will be said to him: *Wisdom that is hidden, and a treasure that is unseen, what profit is in them both?* Therefore for the benefit of others my mouth will speak

Πλούσιοι καὶ πέ νητες αὐτόθεν ἔχουσι γνωριζομένην τὴν ἰδιότητα· οἱ μὲν ὑπερβαίνοντες τὴν κτῆσιν τῶν ἀναγκαίων, οἱ δὲ ἐν ἐνδείᾳ τούτων καθεστηκότες. Ἐπειδὴ δὲ ὁ ἰατρὸς τῶν ψυχῶν οὐκ ἦλθε καλέσαι δικαίους, ἀλλὰ ἁμαρτω λοὺς εἰς μετάνοιαν, πρῶτον ἔταξεν ἐν τῇ κλήσει ἐν ἑκάστῃ συζυγίᾳ τὸ κατεγνωσμένον. Χείρονα γὰρ τὰ ἔθνη τῶν κατοικούντων τὴν οἰκουμένην· ἀλλ' ὅμως προτετίμηται εἰς τὴν κλῆσιν, ἵνα οἱ κακῶς ἔχον τες πρότερον μεταλάβωσι τῆς ἐκ τοῦ ἰατροῦ ὠφε λείας. Πάλιν οἱ γηγενεῖς πρὸ τῶν υἱῶν τῶν ἀνθρώ πων ἐτάχθησαν· καὶ πλούσιοι πρὸ τῶν πενήτων. Τὸ ἀπεγνωσμένον τάγμα, καὶ δύσκολον ἔχον τὴν σωτη ρίαν, πρότερον κέκληται τῶν πτωχῶν. Τοιαύτη γὰρ ἡ τοῦ ἰατροῦ φιλανθρωπία τοῖς ἀσθενεστέροις· προτέ ροις μεταδίδωσι τῆς ὠφελείας. Ὁμοῦ δὲ καὶ εἰ ρήνης ἐστὶ συναγωγὸν ἡ κοινωνία τῆς κλήσεως, ὥστε τοὺς ἔχοντας τέως ἐκ τῶν ἐπιτηδευμάτων πρὸς ἀλλή λους ὑπεναντίως, τούτους διὰ τῆς Ἐκκλησίας προσ εθισθῆναι ἀλλήλοις εἰς τὴν ἀγάπην. Γινωσκέτω γὰρ ὁ πλούσιος, ὅτι ὁμοτίμῳ κηρύγματι κέκληται πρὸς τὸν πένητα. Ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ γὰρ, φησὶ, πλούσιος καὶ πένης. Ἔξω καταλιπὼν τὴν πρὸς τοὺς καταδεεστέ ρους ὑπεροχὴν, καὶ τὸ ἐκ τοῦ πλούτου φρύαγμα, οὕ 29.436 τως εἰσέρχου εἰς τὴν Ἐκκλησίαν τοῦ Θεοῦ. Μήτε οὖν ὁ πλούσιος τὸν πένητα ὑπερηφανείτω, μήτε ὁ πένης τὴν δυναστείαν τῶν εὐπορούντων ὑποπτησσέτω· μήτε οἱ υἱοὶ τῶν ἀνθρώπων τοὺς γηγενεῖς ἐξου θενείτωσαν, μήτε οἱ γηγενεῖς τούτων πάλιν ἀπαλλοτριούσθωσαν. Καὶ τὰ ἔθνη ἐθιζέσθω πρὸς τοὺς κατοι κοῦντας τὴν οἰκουμένην, καὶ οἱ τὴν οἰκουμένην οἰκοῦντες τοὺς ξένους τῶν διαθηκῶν διὰ τῆς ἀγάπης προσλαμβανέσθωσαν. Τὸ στόμα μου λαλήσει σοφίαν, καὶ ἡ μελέτη τῆς καρδίας μου σύνεσιν. Ἐπειδὴ, κατὰ τὸν Ἀπόστολον, Καρδίᾳ πιστεύεται εἰς δικαιοσύνην, στό ματι δὲ ὁμολογεῖται εἰς σωτηρίαν, καὶ ἡ ἀμφοτέρων ἐν τούτοις ἐνέργεια ὑποβάλλει τὴν τελειότητα· διὰ τοῦτο ἀμφότερα ὁ λόγος ἐν τῷ αὐτῷ συνείληφε, τήν τε τοῦ στόματος ἐνέργειαν, καὶ τὴν τῆς καρδίας μελέ την.
