begotten of the Father before all ages, that is, of the substance of the Father, Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father, through whom all things were made, both things in heaven and things on earth; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became man, was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried, and rose on the third day according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father, and is coming again with glory to judge the living and 118.11 the dead, of whose kingdom there will be no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified together, who spoke through 118.12 the prophets; in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church; we confess one baptism for the remission of sins, we look for the resurrection 118.13 of the dead and the life of the age to come. Amen. But those who say, "There was a time when he was not," and, "Before he was begotten he was not," or that he came into being from non-existence, or who allege that the Son of God is of another hypostasis or substance, or is mutable or alterable, these the catholic and apostolic Church anathematizes. 118.14 And this faith was handed down from the holy apostles and * in the Church in the holy city from all the holy bishops together at that time, over three hundred and ten in number. 119.1 But since in our generation certain other successive heresies have sprung up, that is, in the time of the emperors Valentinian and Valens in the tenth year of their reign, and again in the sixth year of Gratian, that is in the 119.2 ninetieth year of Diocletian the tyrant, for this reason both you and we and all the orthodox bishops and, in sum, the whole holy catholic Church, in response to the heresies that have sprung up, following the aforesaid faith of those holy fathers, say thus, especially to those approaching the holy font, that they should declare and say thus: 119.3 We believe in one God, Father Almighty, maker of all things 119.4 invisible and visible; and in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, begotten of God the Father, only-begotten, that is, of the substance of the Father, God of God, Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father, through whom all things were made, both things in heaven and things on 119.5 earth, visible and invisible, who for us men and for our salvation came down and was incarnate, that is, was born perfectly of the holy Mary, the ever-virgin, through the Holy Spirit, became man, that is, taking a perfect man, soul and body and mind and all that a man is, without 119.6 sin; not from the seed of a man nor existing in a man, but shaping flesh for himself into one holy unity; not as he inspired and spoke and worked in the prophets, but 119.7 became perfectly man; "for the Word became flesh," not undergoing change nor altering his own divinity into humanity, but uniting into one his own * holy perfection and divinity; for there is one Lord Jesus Christ and not two, the same God, the same man, not working a confusion, but mixing the two 80.7 into one; not proceeding into non-existence, but strengthening an earthly body with the divinity, he united it into one power, brought it together into one divinity; being one Lord, one Christ, not two Christs nor two Gods. 80.8 in him a body
