as a thousand years,” and on the sixth day, as the scripture foretold, God formed man, and man fell into sin; so that it is clear that thus also on the sixth day of the millennium our Master Jesus Christ appeared on the earth, and saved man through the cross and the resurrection; which things Clement, Theophilus, and Timothy, the wise chronographers, wrote in agreement. And the most God-loving chronographer Eusebius Pamphili, who became bishop of Caesarea in Palestine, also says 229 that the Savior and Lord of all, Jesus Christ, appeared in the sixth millennium of years, according to the number of the six days of the creation of Adam; but before the six-thousandth year was completed, he said that our Lord and God Jesus Christ appeared on the earth to deliver the race of men; and he was born and became man, he says, in the year 5500; our Lord Jesus Christ suffered and rose again and ascended in the year 5533. But all agree that the Lord appeared in the six-thousandth year; therefore, whether more or less, they said he appeared in the 6000th year according to the prophetic voice, and though they do not agree in setting forth the number of the years, he appeared in the last times, as the divine scripture indicates. And during the reign of the same Augustus Caesar Sebastos, a city of Palestine named Salamina suffered from the wrath of God. This city the same Augustus raised up and called it the city of Zeus. And Herod the toparch, that is, king, of Judea was informed at that time that magi spies from Persia had entered the land of Judea; and he ordered them to be arrested. For magi came from Persia, having known, as mystics, through the appeared star which announced in the east the incarnation of the Savior Christ, bringing 230 gifts to him, as to a great king and victor. Who, having come into the east, were asking, Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? and these things were rumored among the Jews. These magi, having been identified, were arrested and brought to King Herod. And he asked them, Why have you come as spies to the land of Judea? And the magi reported to him the miracle of the star, and that a great king had been born to the world, and that we have come bringing gifts to him, as to a great king, to offer to him the gifts we carry, as to God. For we saw his star in the east, and have come to worship him. But Herod, hearing these things, was astonished, considering what power the king who had been born possessed, after Augustus Caesar. So the magi came to Jerusalem in the consulship of Vindicius and Valerius. So Herod inquired of them the exact time of the star's appearance, and said to the magi, If you find him, come and report it to me, so that I too may come and worship him. And the magi departed, led by the star which they had seen in the east, and found Jesus and his mother in the city of Bethlehem. And falling to the ground, they worshipped the Savior Christ; for they said among themselves that this star, which we honor as a god, is showing us his greater God. And having offered to him the gifts which they were carrying, as to God, and 231 having been warned, they went up by another way, that of the border, into the parts of Persia, having disdained King Herod. And when the same King Herod was mocked by the magi, he was enraged; and having inquired diligently from the chief priests of the Jews where the Christ is to be born, he learned. And sending the soldiers, he slew all the infants in Bethlehem, the city of Judea, as the divine scripture says. And immediately Herod, seized by an incurable disease, was eaten by worms and died, and Archelaus his son became king, that is, toparch, of the Jewish nation for 9 years,
