Valentinian the Younger and Theodosius. And when Maximus had committed the murder of the emperor, he immediately came to Rome. Then, indeed, the emperor Theodosius was in the greatest anxiety, and prepared a force against the tyrant, fearing lest he should also plot against the younger Valentinian. And the emperor marched to the war against Maximus, leaving Arcadius reigning in the city of Constantine. And arriving at Thessalonica, he finds those around Valentinian living in great despondency, because out of necessity they had received the tyrant as emperor. Therefore, having taken up the forces of the military legions, he proceeded to Milan; for there Maximus was arranging the affairs of war. But those around the tyrant, when they learned of the emperor's arrival, were not able to withstand the assault for a short time, but shrinking in fear they bring Maximus to him as a prisoner, who was put to death on the 20th of the month of August. And Andragathius, the murderer of the emperor, when the defeat occurred, threw himself into the nearby river and was drowned. Then, therefore, the victorious emperors proceeded to Rome, accompanied by Honorius, the son of Theodosius. Therefore, they were in Rome celebrating victory feasts; at which time indeed Theodosius showed his own goodness towards Symmachus. For he, being of consular rank, had delivered a royal oration for Maximus, and fearing the charge of treason, had taken refuge in the sanctuaries of the churches; the emperor deemed him worthy of all kindness, and enrolled him in the order of the senate. 187 Ibid.: That in the time of the emperor Theodosius, Valentinian the younger emperor is reported to have died from a plot of this kind. His father Valentinian had more wives than was permitted by the established laws of the Romans. His second wife, then, was said to have been the daughter of Justus, and the wife of Magnentius the tyrant in the time of Constantius, who, because of her youth not having had children by him, remained a widow and lived continently; the emperor, having fallen in love with her on account of her exceeding beauty, takes her in a second marriage; from whom Valentinian the younger, who reigned with Theodosius, was born, and Galla, who was joined to Theodosius after the death of Flacilla, at the time when he both conquered Maximus and saved Valentinian; so that he had, in addition to the common interests of the empire, also the connection of marriage. Then, therefore, when the murder of Valentinian was announced, the greatest grief possessed both the emperor of the east and the sister of the deceased, the empress Galla; and great zeal for war was meditated against the one who had committed the murder. And it was Arbogast, of the Frankish race, the son of Bauto, to whom the command of the army had been entrusted by the emperor Gratian, a man fiery and barbaric in spirit; who, having overpowered Valentinian, came into his father's command; for it was not possible to speak against him, because of his strength in wars; for this man dealt with many of those in office against the will of the emperor, and these things not only without the ruler's knowledge, but also against his prohibition; among whom was also Harmonius, who was the son of Taurus, who held the consulship, but since he had offended Arbogast, the latter turned his hand to his sword, and Harmonius, giving his body over to the emperor, was cut to pieces along with the purple robe; and from this, great suspicion arose towards the commander and the emperor. And Valentinian secretly sent for the alliance of Theodosius, as not being able to bear the insolence of the tyrant; however, thinking he was doing something clever against the tyrant, he gives him a letter of dismissal in the council; which the barbarian received and read, and immediately tore it to pieces with his nails, and being enraged against the emperor with a lion-like voice, he departed with a grim look
