hope. Socrates. Wicked hopes, like bad guides, upon sins
lead. Neither a woman without a man, nor a good hope without labor, begets anything useful. (15Ε_304> Leucippus. For pleasant things, even if they are not present, delight with hopes. For that which has been hoped for has been once for all taken from the soul; and that which is no longer from anywhere
expected, prepares a release for the weary. Charicles. For the haste of the speech towards what has not yet been said, the entirety of what has already
been said takes away. Leucippe. For the fear of danger disturbed the hopes of the soul;
but the hope of succeeding covered the fear with pleasure; thus hoping, it feared, and the grieving part rejoiced.
DISCOURSE 39. Concerning women. (15Ε_306> John 4. Jesus says to her: I who speak to you am he. And upon
this his disciples came, and they marveled that he was speaking with a woman. 1 Timothy 2. Let a woman learn in quietness with all submissiveness; but I do not permit a woman to teach
or to exercise authority over a man. Proverbs 5. Do not pay attention to a wicked woman; for honey drips from the lips
of a harlot, which for a season soothes your throat; but afterwards you will find it more bitter than gall.
Proverbs 25. As a worm in wood, so a wicked woman destroys a man.
Proverbs 21. It is better to live in a desert than with a contentious and talkative and angry woman.
Sirach 25. You would consent to dwell with a lion and a dragon, than to dwell with a wicked woman.
912 Basil. The wicked dispositions of women submerge the weak souls of their husbands.
The Theologian. The most foolish of women, lacking their own beauty, flee to colors; and they are, as I might say, decorously put on display, through seemliness unseemly, and through shame more shameful.
Chrysostom. He who has a wicked wife, let him know that he has already received the wages of his iniquities.
It is terrible to take a poorer wife, terrible to take a richer one. For the one has harmed his substance, and the other, the man’s authority and freedom.
(15Ε_308> Clement. Not to adorn herself, nor indeed to be ornamented, beyond what is fitting, shows a woman to be free from slander.
Sextus. Upon a wicked woman a seal is good. Democritus. To be ruled by a woman would be the ultimate outrage. Solon. Solon, having been asked by someone if he should marry, said: If you marry an ugly one,
you will have a punishment; but if a beautiful one, you will have a common one.

Θεολόγου. Αἱ τῶν γυναικῶν ἀφρονέσταται, ἀποροῦσαι κάλλους οἰκείου, πρός τά χρώματα φεύγουσι· καί εἰσίν, ὡς ἄν εἴποιμι, κοσμίως θεατριζόμεναι, δι᾿ εὐσχημοσύνην ἀσχήμονες, καί δι᾿ αἶσχος αἰσχρότεραι.
Χρυσοστ. Ὁ ἔχων γυναῖκα πονηράν, γινωσκέτω ὅτι ἤδη τούς μισθούς τῶν ἀνομιῶν αὐτοῦ ἐκομίσατο.
∆εινόν πενιχροτέραν λαβεῖν γυναῖκα, δεινόν εὐπορωτέραν. Τό μέν γάρ εἰς τήν οὐσίαν ἔβλαψε, τό δέ, εἰς αὐθεντίαν καί ἐλευθερίαν, τόν ἄνδρα.
(15Ε_308> Κλήμεντ. Ἀνύποπτον εἰς διαβολήν δείκνυσι γυναῖκα, τό μή καλλωπίζεσθαι, μηδέ μήν κοσμεῖσθαι, παρά τοῦ πρέποντος.
