Diogenes. Seeing women conversing with each other, he said, An asp is borrowing poison from a viper.
Pulcheria. She, having been asked by someone in a gathering of many women, why she alone of the other women does not wear adornment, said: A sufficient adornment for a woman is the virtue of her husband.
Pythagor. To fall into fire and a woman is the same thing. Secundus. Secundus the wise, having been asked, What is a woman? said: A man's
shipwreck, the storm of a house, an impediment to a carefree life, the capture of life, a daily loss, a self-chosen battle, a costly war, a beast that eats with you, a care that sits with you, an entwining lioness, an adorned Scylla, a wicked animal, a necessary evil.
The same said, I have met with three evils: grammar, poverty; and I was not strong enough to escape a destructive woman.
Philoxenus. Philoxenus the poet, 913 when someone said, Why does Sophocles introduce women as good, but you as base, he said, Because Sophocles speaks of women as they ought to be; but I, as they are.
DISCOURSE 40. Concerning contradiction and insolence and strife. (15E_310> Matt. 5. You have heard that it was said, an eye for an eye, and
a tooth for a tooth? But I say to you: Do not resist the evil one; but whoever slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
Rom. 9. O man, who are you, indeed, to answer back to God? Will what is formed say to the one who formed it, Why have you made me like this? or does the potter not have power over the clay, from the same lump to make, one vessel for honor, and another for dishonor?
Prov. 27. Iron sharpens iron; Prov. 25. The north wind stirs up clouds; but a shameless face, a tongue
provokes. Sirach 4. Do not be rash in your tongue, and sluggish and slack in
your works. Sirach 22. Before a fire, vapor of a furnace and smoke; so before bloodshed,
insults. A man accustomed to words of reproach, in all his days
will not be disciplined. Strife hurried on kindles a fire; and a hasty fight sheds blood. Basil. Contradiction shows an autocratic and insubordinate spirit, even if
it happens in the guise of humility. Of the Theologian. For noble minds are wont to be stubborn against one holding power by force,
and just as a flame fanned by the wind (15E_312> is so much the more ignited, the more violently it is blown upon.
Chrysostom. Do not oppose those who advise you to be silent, saying, I will not endure it that so-and-so should go away laughing at me. For he does not laugh at you then, but when you retaliate. But if he does laugh then, he will suffer this as a fool. But you, in conquering, do not seek the testimony of fools, but consider that from the wise to be sufficient 916. Rather, look up to God, and he will praise you; and the one who is admired by him ought not to seek honor from men at all.

Πουλχερία. Αὕτη ἐρωτηθεῖσα ὑπό τινος ἐν συνόδῳ πλειόνων γυναικῶν, διατί μόνη τῶν ἄλλων γυναικῶν οὐ φορεῖ κόσμον, ἔφη· Αὐτάρκης κόσμος ἐστί γυναικί, ἡ τοῦ ἀνδρός ἀρετή.
Πυθαγόρ. Τό εἰς πῦρ καί γυναῖκα ἐμπεσειν, ἴσον ὑπάρχει. Σεκοῦνδος. Σεκοῦνδος ὁ σοφός ἐρωτηθείς, Τί ἐστι γυνή; εἶπεν· Ἀνδρός
ναυάγιον, οἴκου ζάλη, ἀμεριμνίας ἐμπόδιον, βίου ἅλωσις, καθημερινή ζημία, αὐθαίρετος μάχη, πολυτελής πόλεμος, συνεσθιόμενον θηρίον, συγκαθημένη μέριμνα, συμπλεκομένη λέαινα, κεκοσμημένη σκύλλα, ζῶον πονηρόν, ἀναγκαῖον κακόν.
Ὁ αὐτός ἔφη, Τριῶν κακῶν τέτευγμαι· γραμματικῆς, πενίης, καί οὐλομένης γυναικός ἐκφυγεῖν οὐκ ἴσχυσα.
Φιλόξενος. Φιλόξενος ὁ ποιητής, 913 εἰπόντος τινος, ∆ιατί Σοφοκλῆς χρηστάς παρεισάγει τάς γυναῖκας , αὐτός δέ φαύλας, εἶπεν, Ὅτι Σοφοκλῆς μέν, οἷας δεῖ εἶναι τάς γυναῖκας λέγει· ἐγώ δέ, οἷαί εἰσιν.

καί καθάπερ φλόξ ὑπ᾿ ἀνέμου (15Ε_312> ῥιπιζομένη, τοσούτῳ μᾶλλον ἀνάπτεσθαι, ὅσῳπερ ἄν σφοδρότερον καταπνέηται.
Χρυσοστ. Μή πρός τούς παραινοῦντας σιγᾷν ἀντίτεινε λέγων, Οὐκ ἀνέξομαι ἵνα μου καταγελάσας ὁ δεῖνα ἀπέλθῃ. Οὐ γάρ δή τότε σου καταγελᾷ, ἀλλ᾿ ὅταν ἐπεξέλθῃς. Εἰ δέ καί τότε γελάσεται, ὡς ἀνόητος καί τοῦτο πείσεται. Σύ δέ μή ζήτει νικῶν τήν παρά τῶν ἀνοήτων μαρτυρίαν, ἀλλ᾿ ἀποχρώσας 916 νόμιζε τήν παρά τῶν συνετῶν. Μᾶλλον δέ πρός τόν Θεόν ἀνάβλεψον, κἀκεῖνός σε ἐπαινέσει· τόν δέ παρ᾿ ἐκείνου θαυμαζόμενον, οὐ δεῖ τήν παρά τῶν ἀνθρώπων τιμήν ὅλως ἐπιζητεῖν.
