they made a treaty concerning peace, having come to the borders of the fortress of Ammoudias and Mardes, and they confirmed it with documents. And this was the end of the Persian war of Anastasius in the fifteenth year of his reign. Having lasted for three years, or rather, having devastated the land of the Persians in the previous wars, it ended at this conclusion in the fifteenth year of the reign of Anastasius. And when John, the bishop of Alexandria, died, John the Nicaeote was ordained in his place. In the same year Anastasius ordered, and many bronze works were melted down, from which the great Constantine had set them up. And from them he made his own statue, which he erected on the column of Taurus. For the one formerly standing of Theodosius the Great had fallen from an earthquake and was shattered. Years of the world, 5999. Years of the divine incarnation, 499. Emperor of the Romans, Anastasius, 27 years. 16. Emperor of the Persians, Kavadh, 30 years. 12. Bishop of Rome, Symmachus, 12 years. 6. Bishop of Constantinople, Macedonius, 16 years. 11. Bishop of Jerusalem, Sallustius, 8 years. 4. Bishop of Alexandria, John the Nicaeote, 11 years. 1. Bishop of Antioch, Flavian, 13 years. 8. In this year Anastasius, being relieved of the wars, was eager to pervert Macedonius the patriarch from the orthodox faith. And many of the bishops, currying favor with Anastasius, opposed the synod in Chalcedon, of whom the first was Eleusinius of Sasima. And Anastasius brought a certain Manichaean painter, a Syro-Persian from Cyzicus, in the guise of a presbyter, who dared to paint spectral images foreign to the holy ecclesiastical icons in the palace of Helenianae and in the church of St. Stephen of Aurelianae, with the approval of the emperor who delighted 150 in the Manichaeans, from which also a great sedition of the people arose. The emperor then devised for the prefect to attend the assemblies and the litanies. For he feared the uprisings of the orthodox; and it became a custom. Anastasius brought Xenaeas the Manichaean-minded, also called Philoxenus, to Byzantium, as being of like mind. But Macedonius deemed him worthy of neither communion nor conversation, as the clergy and the monks and the people were agitated against him. Wherefore Anastasius also brought him out of the city secretly. And when a certain Acholius drew a sword against him at the instigation of those who hated him, Macedonius ordered him to receive a monthly allowance, being praised for his gentleness. And this he also did for needy temple-robbers. In the same year there appeared a certain fearsome man, a metallurgist, John by name, an impostor in Antioch, who, secretly entering the silversmiths' shops, showed the silversmiths golden hands and feet of statues and other figures, saying: "I found a treasure full of these things;" and he deceived many and defrauded them, taking much money; and having escaped notice, he fled and entering Constantinople, he defrauded many there also; so that the emperor, learning of it, seized him. But he offered the emperor a horse's bridle all of gold with pearls; and taking it, the emperor says to him: "Truly you do not defraud me." And he exiled him to Petra, the fortress of Asia, and there he died. 6. 500. 17. 13. 7. 12. 5. 2. 9. In this year Anastasius the emperor fortified the place of Daras in Mesopotamia, making it large and strong, lying between the borders of the Romans and the Persians, and he made churches and granaries for storing grain and cisterns for water and porticoes, naming it Anastasiopolis. And he also built two public baths and gave it the rights of a city. 151 Years of the world, 6001. Years of the divine incarnation, 501. Emperor of the Romans, Anastasius, 27 years. 18.
