of sins, regeneration of the soul, a garment of light, an inviolable seal, a chariot to heaven, an agent of the kingdom, the gift of adoption. O wretched one, do you consider pleasure more honorable than so many and so great goods? For I understand your postponement; even if you disguise it with words. The deeds themselves cry out, even if you are silent with your voice. Let me abuse the flesh for the enjoyment of shameful things, let me wallow 95.1276 in the mire of pleasures, let me bloody my hands, let me take what belongs to others, let me walk deceitfully, let me perjure myself, let me lie, and then, when I cease from evils, I will receive baptism. But who has fixed for you the limit of your life? who has set for you the term of old age? who is so trustworthy a guarantor of the future in your eyes? Do you not see infants being snatched away, those in their prime being led away? life does not have a single term. Why do you wait for baptism to become a gift of a fever? when you will not be able to utter the saving words, and perhaps [not even] hear clearly; not to raise your hands to heaven, not to stand up on your feet, not to bend the knee in worship, not to be taught profitably, not to confess securely, not to make a covenant with Christ, not to renounce the enemy, and perhaps not even to listen with understanding while being initiated, leaving those present in doubt, Did he perceive the grace, or is he insensible of what has happened? but when you do receive the grace with understanding, then you have the talent, but you do not bring forth the work. Just as He gave substance to those who were not, so He refashioned those who had substance, a fashioning both more divine and more exalted than the first; which for beginners is a seal, but for those more advanced in age, a grace, and a restoration of the image that has suffered through wickedness, so that we may not, becoming worse through despair, and always being carried down toward what is worse, fall completely outside of the good and of virtue. Let the bath be for you, not of the body only, but also of the image; not only a washing away of sins, but also a correction of character; let it not only wash away the previous filth, but also cleanse the source; let it not only impress how to acquire well, but also how to give back well, or at the very least, how to put aside what was ill-gotten. For what is the benefit, if your sin is forgiven, but the loss you caused is not resolved for the one who was wronged? there being two evils for you, both acquiring unjustly and holding on to what was acquired, you received remission for the one, but the other you are committing today. For today what belongs to another is with you, and the sin was not annulled, but was interrupted by time; the one was dared before baptism, the other remains after baptism. For the bath holds forgiveness for sins committed, not for sins being committed. But the purification must not be sophistry, but an impression; you must be made completely bright, and not merely colored; nor should the grace be a covering of sins, but a deliverance from them. Blessed is God, who alone does wondrous things. who makes all things, and prepares them. Those who yesterday were captives, are now free, and citizens of the 95.1277 Church. Those formerly in the shame of sins, are now in the confidence of righteousness. If to know God has no excess in goodness, to become a son of God is beyond all good fortune. For he who is deemed worthy to become a son of God, will surely have the dignity of the Father. But the success is beyond prayer; the gift is beyond hope; the grace is beyond nature. -He is baptized with the Holy Spirit, who is sanctified through all thought, and words, and deeds, and is spiritual. For as he who is baptized in water is entirely moistened, so he who is baptized in the Holy Spirit becomes entirely spiritual and holy, being made such in thought and deed.

TITLE 5. -Concerning abominations, and so-called gods. You shall have no other gods

besides me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, nor any likeness of anything that is in heaven, and

of anything that is on the earth below, and of anything that is in the waters under the earth. You shall not bow down to them, nor
