I hold in praise and a word of acceptance, but not entirely, as I am coming to show. And I desire to acquire like-minded men (for how could I not?), such great and manly men, proven in piety, but with the word of truth and with possible and fitting power. Therefore I would say this: what is it that makes the difference for you with respect to Tarasius? Faith? And as far as is apparent, he is orthodox, having followed the holy synods and having been of one mind with the other patriarchs, having especially fought for the faith previously. The reception of those returning from heresy? And it was not an innovation by him; for it is from the holy fathers, who received them in three ways: either through re-baptism, as in the case of the Pepuzians, or through anointing with myrrh, as in the case of the Arians, or through anathematization of their own doctrine, as in the case of the Nestorians. Ordination for money, which necessarily falls under deposition? Yes, that is completely true; and indeed at that time shepherds were seen to be grievous wolves, altars were destroyed, divine relics were dishonored, holy books were burned. What more? The very icon of Christ, along with other most venerable ones, was insulted and trampled upon. And who could recount in brief the things that require a long history? But what then? That the subsequent president, having advanced rather quickly from worldly affairs to the dignity of the hierarchy, was not able to fight sufficiently for the spirit. From this came the scandals, and from that, the things that are now causing trouble have taken their cause. You, then, know how you stand with him. But we, since we heard from him that he does not receive those ordained for money into communion, even if it was not so suspected, considered it advantageous for the good of peace to be in concord with him; since the Theologian also says, as long as it was possible, one must incline towards this. And where the grieving point is suspicion, consent is better than stubbornness. And neither do we drag you down from your conscience, nor should you demand of us a judgment which is not obvious to us, since person and time and experience cause those who have not arrived at the same things in the same way to differ. But what is this retracing of steps to the divine Germanus and this seeking of ordination from there by all means? For what about the three heretics in between? There is no one who was not ordained by them or by those ordained by them, as the ordination was passed on in succession down to Tarasius. How many ordained men from the east and west and north and sea came in the meantime and were joined through communion to our church? And how many were ordained without money at that time and have ordained others, even if they held heretical views? To know all these things belongs to God alone and not for man to ascertain, and for this reason to suppose all are deposed. But since we are men, as men, I beseech you, let us look at the matters. because man looks at the face, but God looks at the heart, and let only the confession by mouth be required, when it is not obviously false; according to which Tarasius also received his ordination, on the basis of which even the zealots and scrupulous men of that time both came together with Tarasius and were of one mind, even if rather quickly after the synod they were at variance regarding the reception, according to them, of ordination for money and due to certain other issues. If this seems to be well so also to you, we shall also proceed to what follows; for these things will be said also from Tarasius up to the present. And what is the conclusion? To receive communion from every irreproachable priest, according to the Theologian and Chrysostom. For the one says, "Let everyone be trustworthy to you for purification, only let him be one of the approved and not one openly condemned, nor one of those alien to the faith"; but the other, "Be curious, be inquisitive; for unexamined communion is not without danger. For the danger concerns great things." Let us therefore seek out and be inquisitive concerning him from whom we ought to receive communion. whether he confesses the right faith, whether he was not ordained for money, whether any other of the suspected and heard-of faults in his life is true.

Ἐκζητήσωμεν τοίνυν καὶ πολυπραγμονήσωμεν, παρ' οὗ ὀφείλομεν κοινωνῆσαι. εἰ τὴν πίστιν ὁμολογοίη ὀρθήν, εἰ μὴ χρήμασι κεχειροτόνηται, εἰ μή τι ἄλλο τῶν κατὰ τὸν βίον αὐτοῦ ὑποπτευομένων καὶ ἠκουσμένων σφαλερῶν ἀληθές.
