11 years. 3. Flavian, bishop of Antioch, 13 years. 10. In this year, the emperor Anastasius forced Flavian, the bishop of Antioch, to subscribe to the Henotikon of Zeno; who, having held a synod of the bishops under him, wrote a long letter, confessing the synods in Nicaea and Constantinople and Ephesus, passing over in silence the one in Chalcedon. And he renounced Diodorus and Theodore, adding four chapters, through which he appears not to be in accord with the synod in Chalcedon, and they especially fight against the phrase, "in two natures." But some say that they are by Acacius of Constantinople. And Flavian wrote a private letter to Anastasius, following his purpose; likewise also the impious Xenaias, who, acting on his own authority, added to these chapters an anathema against the most divine Leo of Rome and the synod and those of like mind with them. Constantine, bishop of Seleucia, anathematized the holy synod in Chalcedon, writing the same thing also to Xenaias. But Flavian, as if denouncing them, wrote to the emperor reporting these things. But the emperor became angry with him, approving of Constantine and Xenaias more. Anastasius wrote to Elias, the bishop of Jerusalem, ordering him to vote against the synod in Chalcedon. But Elias wrote back to the emperor, anathematizing Nestorius and Eutyches, but accepting Diodorus and Theodore and the synod in Chalcedon. In the same year a disturbance occurred in Alexandria between John the bishop of Nikiou and the comes Dagalaïphus concerning Genna152dius Phicopterus; and a revolt took place in the city for many days; and the soldiers set fire to the house of bishop John, and by the citizens, the house of Phicopterus; and the Alexandrians erected a column of the emperor in the Anticantharus. 19. 15. 9. 14. 7. 4. 11. In this year, some 200 heretical monks, having come from the east, intrigued in Byzantium along with the impious Severus against Macedonius and the synod. Anastasius received them with honor as enemies of the truth and as having disturbed the east and doing the same things here. But John, the bishop of Alexandria, promised to give the emperor two thousand pounds of gold, if he would completely cast out the synod in Chalcedon. And the emperor was forcing Macedonius to have communion with the apocrisiaries of John and to accept John, who neither accepted nor cast out the synod. But Macedonius resisted, saying he would not have communion with them, unless they confessed the synod in Chalcedon as mother and teacher. And Deuterius, the bishop of the Arians of Byzantium, while baptizing a certain man called Barbas, dared to say, contrary to the Lord's tradition: "Barbas is baptized into the name of the Father through the Son in the Holy Spirit." And immediately the font dried up. And Barbas, becoming fearful, fled and made known the miracle to all. And the emperor was forcing Macedonius, the bishop of Constantinople, to anathematize the synod in Chalcedon, just as Elias of Jerusalem also; but Macedonius said it was impossible to do this without an ecumenical synod having the bishop of Rome as president. Wherefore the emperor, being hostile to him, ordered those taking refuge in the church to be dragged away by force, and he granted the rights of asylum to the churches of the heretics. And as many heretical clergy and laity as were in Byzantium, devoted themselves to Severus and the heretical eastern monks, intriguing against Macedonius. And the God-bearing monks in Palestine, moved by divine zeal, came to Byzantium against Severus and the monks with him. And Dorotheus, an Alexandrian monk, wrote a long book 153 in favor of the synod in Chalcedon, which he gave to Magna, the sister-in-law of Anastasius, who was orthodox. And she brought the book to Anastasius, hoping through it to change his mind. And he, having read it and finding it to be against his opinion, Dorotheus on the one hand to Oasis
