84.6 And when the flame is extinguished, remains of its flesh are left still raw and having disappeared for one day, it generates a worm; the worm grows wings, becoming a fledgling, and on the third day it matures, and having matured, it shows itself to those serving in the place and again runs back to its own homeland and rests. 85.1 But it occurs to me to marvel concerning the altogether deceived mind of the unbelieving Greeks and other barbarians, how in their own myths they are not ashamed to signify resurrection in every way and often to sing about resur85.2 rection, as their myths record that Alcestis, the daughter of Pelias, died for her husband Admetus and was raised by Heracles after three days and brought up from the nether regions, and Pelops, the son of Tantalus, after being cut into pieces 85.3 for their falsely-named gods by his own father; Amphiaraus the son of Oicles, restored to life by Asclepius, Glaucus the son of Minos, brought back to life by Polyidus the son of Coeranus with a certain herb, Castor on account of Polydeuces his brother, who willingly chose to exchange life with him every other 85.4 day, and Protesilaus on account of Laodamia. but also that Sisyphus and Tantalus and the daughters of Caucasus, whom they have called Erinyes, and Tiresias along with them have been cast into Tartarus to pay the penalty there, the one by means of a rock, the other under a wheel, and that others have been punished in other ways and still exist in punishment, as not having passed into 85.5 non-existence, but existing in bodies. For if they did not have bodies, how were they delivered to punishments under a rock and a wheel? And there are many things to say about these matters for the presentation of the faith among us, but as a refutation against them. 86.1 But also those who spring from the heresies sing things kindred to these and in harmony with unbelief, in that some of the heretics, I mean the Manichaeans, say there will be a resurrection not of the body, but of the soul, and likewise also the aforementioned Greeks think and hold the same opinion, so that their argument is nonsensical 86.2 rather than put forth from understanding. For if the heresies speak of a resurrection and in general believe in a resurrection, but they define this with respect to souls, such a thing is foolish. For how will a soul that has not fallen rise up? For we do not bury souls in 86.3 tombs, but bodies. For souls do not fall, but the flesh does; just as custom is wont to call dead bodies "fallen ones." Therefore, if a resurrection is confessed by them, it is clear to everyone that it is 86.4 not of the soul, but of the body which has fallen. But again the Greeks are refuted, who deny the resurrection entirely. For by bringing food and drink to the tombs on the days called "public," they burn the foods as whole offerings and pour out the wines as libations, in no way benefiting the dead but rather harming themselves. 86.5 Nevertheless, they are compelled by their custom to confess the resurrection of the dead. For they come to where the bodies of the deceased were laid and call out to the buried dead by name: 86.6 "Arise," they say, "so-and-so, eat and drink and be merry." And if they think that the souls remain there, where the remains of the deceased are buried, such an expectation concerning the souls is a good one; for they await the coming day and the resurrection of the regeneration, until they receive back their composite and yoked bodies, even if the children of the Greeks abhor the flesh as being base and completely perishing and having no 86.7 hope of revival. But if they do not do this in this manner, by what reasoning do they, by binding the souls which are better than the substance of bodies in tombs, rather cast them into condemnation by their supposition, defining

Ἕλληνες δὲ πάλιν ἐλέγχονται οἱ τὸ πᾶν τῆς ἀναστάσεως ἀρνούμενοι. ἀποφέροντες γὰρ εἰς τὰ μνήματα βρώματά τε καὶ πόματα ἐν ταῖς πανδήμοις καλουμέναις ἡμέραις ὁλοκαυτοῦσι μὲν τὰ ἐδέσματα σπένδουσι δὲ τοὺς οἴνους, μηδὲν μὲν τοὺς νεκροὺς ὠφελοῦντες ἑαυτοὺς δὲ μᾶλλον βλάπτοντες. 86.5 πλὴν ἀναγκάζονται ἀπὸ τῆς συνηθείας ὁμολογεῖν τὴν τῶν νεκρῶν ἀνάστασιν. ἔνθα γὰρ ἐτέθη τὰ σώματα τῶν τελευτησάντων παραγίνονται καὶ προσφωνοῦσι τοῖς τεθαμμένοις νεκροῖς ἐξ ὀνόματος· 86.6 ἀνάστα, φάσκοντες, ὁ δεῖνα, φάγε καὶ πίε καὶ εὐφράνθητι. καὶ εἰ μὲν τὰς ψυχὰς ἐκεῖσε νομίζουσιν ἐμπαραμένειν, ἔνθα τὰ λείψανα τῶν τελευτησάντων τέθαπται, ἀγαθή τις τοιαύτη περὶ τῶν ψυχῶν προσδοκία· ἐμπαραμένουσι γὰρ τὴν ἡμέραν τὴν μέλλουσαν καὶ τὴν ἀνάστασιν τῆς παλιγγενεσίας, ἕως τὰ σύνθετα καὶ σύζυγα αὐτῶν ἀπολάβωσι σώματα, εἰ καὶ βδελύττονται οἱ τῶν Ἑλλήνων παῖδες τὴν σάρκα ὡς φαύλην οὖσαν καὶ τέλεον ἀφανιζομένην καὶ ἐλπίδα μὴ 86.7 ἔχουσαν ἀναβιώσεως. εἰ δὲ μὴ τούτῳ τῷ τρόπῳ τοῦτο ποιοῦσι, τίνι τῷ λόγῳ τὰς βελτίους ψυχὰς τῆς τῶν σωμάτων οὐσίας μνήμασιν ἐγκαταδέοντες καταδίκῃ μᾶλλον περιβάλλουσι τῇ ὑπολήψει, ὁριζόμενοι
