of men, and they introduced abstinence from what they call animate things, being ungrateful to the God who made all things, and they contradict 4.29.3 the salvation of the first-formed man. And this has now been invented among them by a certain Tatian, who was the first to introduce this blasphemy; who, having been a hearer of Justin, as long as he was with him, brought forth nothing of this kind, but after his martyrdom he fell away from the church, puffed up and blinded by the conceit of being a teacher, as if he were superior to the rest, he established his own type of school, inventing certain invisible aeons, like those of Valentinus, and declaring marriage to be corruption and fornication, similarly to Marcion and Saturninus, and making his own denial of the salvation of Adam». 4.29.4 These things Irenaeus wrote then; but a little later, a certain Severus by name, having strengthened the aforementioned heresy, became the cause for those who came from it of the designation Severians, derived from him. 4.29.5 These, then, use the Law and the Prophets and the Gospels, interpreting in their own way the sense of the sacred Scriptures; but they blaspheme Paul the apostle and set aside his epistles, not even accepting the Acts of the Apostles. 4.29.6 However, their former leader, Tatian, having composed I know not how a certain combination and collection of the Gospels, named this The Diatessaron, which is still current among some even now; and they say that he dared to alter some expressions of the apostle, as if correcting the composition of their style. 4.29.7 This man has left behind a great number of writings, of which his celebrated discourse, To the Greeks, is especially mentioned by many, in which, mentioning ancient times, he showed that Moses and the Hebrew prophets were earlier than all the renowned men among the Greeks; and this indeed seems to be the finest and most useful of all his writings. And such were the things concerning these men; 4.30.1 In the same reign, when heresies were abounding in Mesopotamia, Bardesanes, a most able man and most skillful in the Syriac tongue, having composed dialogues against the Marcionites and certain others who were leaders of different doctrines, committed them to his own language and script, along with very many other of his writings; these his pupils, who were very many for him as he was powerful in argument, have translated 4.30.2 from the Syriac to the Greek tongue. Among which is also his most able dialogue on fate addressed to Antoninus, and as many other things as they say he wrote on the occasion of the persecution at that time. 4.30.3 He had formerly belonged to the school of Valentinus, but having condemned it and refuted much of its mythology, he seemed somehow to himself to have passed over to the more orthodox opinion, yet he did not completely wash away the filth of his former heresy.
