philanthropy and the rest of all the virtues crown your divine head. Therefore, knowing these things, I have come with good hopes that I will surely obtain what I ask for. But what the foundation of this present preface is, the story as it proceeds will teach you. Taken from childhood with the suffering of a flow of blood, I have spent my life and my wealth on physicians, and found no healing. 238 But having heard of the cures of the marveled-at Christ, who raises the dead and brings the blind back to the light and drives demons out of mortals and heals all those wasting away in sicknesses by a word, I therefore ran to him as to a god. And having seen the crowd surrounding him, but being afraid to tell him also of my incurable sickness, lest turning away from the defilement of the suffering he be angry with me and the plague of the sickness come upon me more, I reasoned to myself that if I could touch the fringe of his garment, I would surely be healed; and secretly entering into the crowd around him I stole the healing, touching his fringe; and the fountain of my blood being stopped, I was immediately made well. But he, rather, as though foreknowing the counsel of my heart, cried out, "Who touched me? For power has gone out from me." But I, turning pale and groaning, thinking the sickness was returning upon me more boldly, falling down before him I filled the earth with tears, confessing my boldness. But he, as a good man, having compassion on me, sealed the healing for me, saying, "Take heart, daughter, your faith has saved you; go 239 in peace." Thus you also, august ones, grant a swift petition to the one who petitions . But King Herod, having heard these things through the petition, was astonished by the miracle; and fearing the mystery of the healing said, "This healing that has happened to you, O woman, is worthy of a greater monument. Go, therefore, and erect for him such a monument as you wish, glorifying with purpose the one who healed you." And immediately the same Beronike, formerly the woman with the issue of blood, in the midst of her own city of Paneas, erected to our Lord and God Jesus Christ a bronze monument of cast bronze, having mixed in a small part of gold and silver. Which monument remains in the city of Paneas to this day, having been moved long ago from the place where it stood in the middle of the city into a holy house of prayer. This record I found in the same city of Paneas from a certain Bassus, who from being a Jew became a Christian. In which was the life of all the kings who formerly reigned over the Jewish land. But the same King Herod, the son of Philip, having become sated, was judged for 8 months. And he was slain in his 240 bedchamber after the 8 months with the connivance of his wife, as the most wise Clement wrote. And in the eighteenth year of the reign of the same Tiberius Caesar and in the 7th month, being about 33 years old, Jesus Christ, our God, was betrayed by Judas Iscariot, his disciple, our same Lord and Savior, in the month of Dystros, which is also March, on the 23rd, the moon being in its 13th day; and it was the fifth day, the fifth hour of the night. And he was brought to Caiaphas the high priest, and from there he was handed over to Pontius Pilate the governor; and immediately the wife of the same Pilate, Procla, declared to him, "Have nothing to do with that righteous man; for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of him." And when the Jews learned this, they stirred up a riot, crying, "Away with him, away with him, crucify him." And our Lord Jesus Christ was crucified on the 8th day before the Kalends of April, in the month of March on the 24th, the moon being in its 14th day; and it was the sixth hour of the day, the day being the Preparation. And the sun was darkened, and there was darkness over the world; concerning which darkness the most wise Phlegon the Athenian wrote these things in his own writing. In the

φιλανθρωπία καὶ αἱ λοιπαὶ τῶν ἀρετῶν πασῶν περιστέφουσι τὴν ὑμετέραν θείαν κορυφήν. ὅθεν κἀγὼ ταῦτα εἰδυῖα ἧκον σὺν ἀγαθαῖς ταῖς ἐλπίσι πάντως τῶν αἰτουμένων τευξομένη. τίς δὲ ἡ τοῦ παρόντος προοιμίου κρηπὶς προϊὼν ὁ λόγος σε διδάξει. ἐκ παιδόθεν ληφθεῖσα πάθει αἱμοῤῥοίας ὀχετῶν εἰς ἰατροὺς κατανάλωσά μου τὸν βίον καὶ τὸν πλοῦτον, καὶ ἴασιν οὐχ ηὗρον. 238 ἀκηκουῗα δὲ τοῦ θαυμαζομένου Χριστοῦ τὰ ἰάματα, ὃς νεκροὺς ἐξανίστησι καὶ τυφλοὺς πάλιν εἰς φάος ἕλκων καὶ δαίμονας ἐκ βροτῶν ἀπελαύνων καὶ πάντας τοὺς ἐν νόσοις μαραινομένους λόγῳ θεραπεύει, πρὸς αὐτὸν οὖν κἀγὼ ὡς πρὸς θεὸν ἔδραμον. καὶ προσεσχηκυῖα τὸ περιέχον αὐτὸν πλῆθος, δειλιάσασα δὲ ἐξειπεῖν αὐτῷ καὶ τὴν ἀήττητόν μου νόσον, μή πως τὸν μολυσμὸν τοῦ πάθους ἀποστρεφόμενος ὀργισθῇ κατ' ἐμοῦ καὶ πλέον μοι ἐπέλθῃ ἡ πληγὴ τῆς νόσου, κατ' ἐμαυτὴν ἐλογισάμην ὅτι εἰ δυνηθείην ἅψασθαι τοῦ κρασπέδου τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ, πάντως ἰαθήσομαι· καὶ λάθρᾳ εἰς τὸ περὶ αὐτὸν εἰσδύνασα πλῆθος ἐσύλησα τὴν ἴασιν, τοῦ κρασπέδου αὐτοῦ ἁψαμένη· καὶ σταλείσης μου τῆς πηγῆς τοῦ αἵματος γέγονα παραχρῆμα ὑγιής. αὐτὸς δὲ μᾶλλον, ὡς προγνοὺς τῆς ἐμῆς καρδίας τὸ βούλευμα, ἀνέκραξε, Τίς μου ἥψατο; δύναμις γὰρ ἐξῆλθεν ἀπ' ἐμοῦ. ἐγὼ δὲ ὠχριῶσα καὶ στένουσα, τὴν νόσον θρασυτέραν ὑποστρέφειν ἐπ' ἐμὲ λογιζομένη, προσπεσοῦσα αὐτῷ τὴν γῆν ἐπλήρωσα δακρύων, τὴν τόλμαν ἐξειποῦσα. ὁ δὲ ὡς ἀγαθὸς σπλαγχνισθεὶς ἐπ' ἐμοὶ ἐπεσφράγισέ μοι τὴν ἴασιν, εἰρηκώς, Θάρσει, θύγατερ, ἡ πίστις σου σέσωκέ σε· πο 239 ρεύου εἰς εἰρήνην. οὕτως καὶ ὑμεῖς, σεβαστοί, τὴν δέησιν ὀξεῖαν τῇ δεομένῃ παράσχετε . Ὁ δὲ βασιλεὺς Ἡρώδης ἀκηκοὼς ταῦτα διὰ τῆς δεήσεως ἐξεπλάγη διὰ τὸ θαῦμα· καὶ φοβηθεὶς τὸ μυστήριον τῆς ἰάσεως εἶπεν, Αὕτη ἡ εἰς σὲ γενομένη ἴασις, ὦ γύναι, μείζονος στήλης ἐστὶν ἀξία. πορευθεῖσα τοίνυν οἵαν βούλει ἀνάστησον αὐτῷ στήλην, προθέσει δοξάζουσα τὸν ἰασάμενον. Καὶ εὐθέως ἡ αὐτὴ Βερονίκη, ἡ πρῴην αἱμόῤῥους, ἐν μέσῳ τῆς ἰδίας αὐτῆς πόλεως Πανεάδος ἀνέστησε τῷ κυρίῳ ἡμῶν καὶ θεῷ Ἰησοῦ Χριστῷ στήλην χαλκῆν ἐκ χαλκοῦ θερμηλάτου, συμμίξασα βραχύ τι μέρος χρυσοῦ καὶ ἀργύρου. ἥτις στήλη μένει ἐν Πανεάδι πόλει ἕως τῆς νῦν, πρὸ πολλοῦ χρόνου μετενεχθεῖσα ἀφ' οὗ ἵστατο ἐν μέσῳ τῆς πόλεως τόπου εἰς ἅγιον εὐκτήριον οἶκον. ὅπερ ὑπόμνημα ηὗρον ἐν τῇ αὐτῇ Πανεάδι πόλει παρὰ Βάσσῳ τινί, γενομένῳ ἀπὸ Ἰουδαίων χριστιανῷ. ἐν οἷς ὑπῆρχεν ὁ βίος πάντων τῶν βασιλέων τῶν βασιλευσάντων πρῴην τῆς Ἰουδαϊκῆς χώρας. Ὁ δὲ αὐτὸς βασιλεὺς Ἡρώδης ὁ Φιλίππου γενόμενος ἐμπληθὴς ἐκρίνετο ἐπὶ μῆνας ηʹ. καὶ ἐσφάγη ἐν τῷ κουβικλείῳ 240 αὐτοῦ μετὰ τοὺς ηʹ μῆνας συνειδυίας καὶ τῆς γυναικὸς αὐτοῦ, καθὼς ὁ σοφώτατος Κλήμης συνεγράψατο. Τῷ δὲ ὀκτωκαιδεκάτῳ ἔτει τῆς βασιλείας τοῦ αὐτοῦ Τιβερίου Καίσαρος καὶ μηνὶ τῷ ζʹ, γενόμενος ἐνιαυτῶν περί που λγʹ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Χριστός, ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν, παρεδόθη ὑπὸ Ἰούδα Ἰσκαριώτου, μαθητοῦ αὐτοῦ, ὁ αὐτὸς κύριος καὶ σωτὴρ ἡμῶν, μηνὶ δύστρῳ τῷ καὶ μαρτίῳ κγʹ, τῆς σελήνης ἐχούσης ἡμέραν ιγʹ· ἦν δὲ ἡμέρα πέμπτη, ὥρα νυκτερινὴ πέμπτη. καὶ ἀπηνέχθη πρὸς τὸν Καϊάφαν ἀρχιερέα, κἀκεῖθεν ἐξεδόθη Ποντίῳ Πιλάτῳ ἡγεμόνι· καὶ εὐθέως ἡ γυνὴ τοῦ αὐτοῦ Πιλάτου Πρόκλα ἐδήλωσεν αὐτῷ, Μηδὲν σοὶ καὶ τῷ δικαίῳ τούτῳ· πολλὰ γὰρ ἔπαθον σήμερον κατ' ὄναρ δι' αὐτόν. καὶ γνόντες τοῦτο οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι, ἐστασίαζον κράζοντες, Ἄρον, ἄρον, σταύρωσον αὐτόν. καὶ ἐσταυρώθη κύριος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς τῇ πρὸ ηʹ καλανδῶν ἀπριλλίων, μηνὶ μαρτίῳ κδʹ, τῆς σελήνης ἐχούσης ἡμέραν ιδʹ· ἦν δὲ ἡμερινὴ ὥρα ἕκτη, τῆς ἡμέρας οὔσης παρασκευῆς. καὶ ἐσκοτίσθη ὁ ἥλιος, καὶ ἦν εἰς τὸν κόσμον σκότος· περὶ οὗ σκότους συνεγράψατο ὁ σοφώτατος Φλέγων ὁ Ἀθηναῖος εἰς τὴν ἰδίαν αὐτοῦ συγγραφὴν ταῦτα.
