teaching a difference, has set the example of a second marriage. "Or do you not know, brothers (for I am speaking to those who know the law), that the law is binding on a person as long as he lives?" Then the example: "For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives. But if her husband dies, she is released from the law of the husband. Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress." And here now, constructing another point, he showed that a second marriage is not to be rejected. And writing to the blessed Timothy, and legislating 83.544 concerning the ecclesiastical orders, having gone through many things concerning the list of widows, he added: "But refuse to enroll younger widows." And having stated the reasons, he adds: "So I would have younger widows marry, bear children, manage their households, and give the adversary no occasion for slander." But when Paul says, "I wish," Novatus dares to say, "I do not wish." But let us follow the laws of Paul, and let us leave the arrogance of Novatus to its lamentation. 27. — Concerning fornication. But fornication, and all licentiousness, we forbid as unlawful actions. For we hear the most divine Paul crying out: "But sexual immorality and all impurity must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints." And again: "that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau." And: "Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous." And in the Epistle to the Corinthians: "if anyone who is called a brother is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a reviler, a drunkard or a swindler—not even to eat with such a one." Because of this licentiousness, he also delivered the fornicator to Satan, and he cries out explicitly: "If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple." For this reason also he commands to flee licentiousness headlong. "For do you not know," he says, "that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written," he says, "'The two will become one flesh.' But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body." And to the Galatians he offered the same teaching: "Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, murders, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God." But Basilides, and Carpocrates, and Epiphanes, and Prodicus, and the rest of the teachers of licentiousness and lawlessness, read these things, but introduced a contrary legislation, openly setting themselves against the laws of the Spirit. And he wrote similarly to the Ephesians: "For I say," he said, "and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. 83.545 But that is not the way you learned Christ!—assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires;" And what follows these things. And a little after: "For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance
