he banishes and despises the book because of its inscription, "Tragedy, that is, a prophecy of the present state of affairs." just as they say was said by Basil the Great against Julian. But Macedonius was anathematizing Flavian of Antioch and all who dared to say anything against the synod, and he anathematized and drove away the apocrisiaries of Flavian who had come to him on some business. 20. 16. 10. 15. 8. 5. 12. In this year Anastasius decreed a synod to be convened in Sidon. For Soterichus, the bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia, being ordained by Macedonius, confessed in writing to accept the dogmas of the synod in Chalcedon as a definition of faith. but after this he became so hostile, as to go to the east and confer with the impious Xenaias, and for both to ask the emperor for a synod to be held in Sidon for the complete rejection of the holy synod in Chalcedon; which was also convened and quickly dissolved, the emperor having sent for this purpose Eutropius the tribune, who, having dissolved it, induced Flavian of Antioch and Elias of Jerusalem with their bishops to write things pleasing to the emperor. And Flavian wrote that he accepted only the three synods and the Henoticon of Zeno, making no mention of the one in Chalcedon. But Elias of Jerusalem wrote that the one in Chalcedon should also be rejected. But Soterichus of Caesarea and Xenaias reported to the emperor against Flavian and Elias, that because they were unwilling to declare clearly against the synod in Chalcedon, they did not agree with each other. But Anastasius, being angry, instructed some falsely named monks to assemble in Antioch and to rise up against Flavian, asking him to anathematize the synod in Chalcedon and Diodore and Theo154dore and Ibas and Theodoret; which Flavian, being fainthearted, also did, and he anathematized them in the church along with the synod. In the same year the emperor was also plotting against Macedonius; and the schismatics with hired mobs, while chanting the Trisagion on a Sunday in the Archangel chapel of the palace and in the great church, would add, "who was crucified for us," so that the orthodox out of necessity drove them out with blows. And the emperor openly, through the schismatic monks and clerics and Julian, once bishop of Caria, but then of Halicarnassus, and Severus the impious, while he was still a monk, made war on Macedonius, inflicting on him shameful public insults. But the crowds with women and children, led by the orthodox monks, gathered and cried out: "It is time for martyrdom, Christians, let us not abandon our father;" insulting the emperor as a Manichaean and unworthy of the throne. But he, being afraid, shut the gates of the palace, and prepared ships in order to flee. But Macedonius, whom he had sworn never to see again, he then summoned to see, fearing the crowds. And as he was going to him, the people testified to the leaders and monks, saying: "We have our father from you." And the men of the scholae acclaimed him as he passed by. And entering before Anastasius, he rebuked him as an enemy of the church. But he pretended for the moment to be united with him. 52nd Bishop of Jerusalem, Elias, 23 years. 64. 504. 21. 17. 11. 16. 1. 6. 13. In this year the emperor deceived Macedonius through Celer the magister, having made a memorandum to him, in which he confesses to accept the first and second synods, but omitted the one in Ephesus and Chalcedon; which brought great blame upon Macedonius. For through this he also accepted the Henoticon of Zeno, to which also, when he was being 155ordained, he had subscribed. But Macedonius, going to the monastery of Dalmatus, made a defense through an address to the zealot monks and clerics who were scandalized at him, that he accepts the holy synod in Chalcedon and holds as heretics those not accepting it; and they celebrated the liturgy with him. But the emperor persuaded with gifts his like-minded monks and clerics
