of God? and again: Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and the Spirit of God dwells in you? and again: But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. And again it is written: And such were some of you, but you were washed, you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our God 29.768. And again: For I will not dare to say anything of what Christ has not accomplished through me by word and deed, for the obedience of the nations, in the power of signs and wonders, in the power of the Holy Spirit. And in the beginning of his epistles, Saint Paul remembers the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, writing thus: Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, a called apostle, set apart for the Gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures concerning his Son, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, who was declared Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness; and again: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit; and again: Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of ministries, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of workings, but the same God, who works all things in all; and Job: As the Lord lives, who has thus judged me, and the Almighty, who has embittered my soul, but the divine Spirit which is in my nostrils; and David: Send forth your light and your truth; calling the Spirit 'light', and the Son 'truth'; and in other places: Show us, O Lord, your mercy, and grant us your Salvation. Concerning the Spirit. Let every soul seeking concerning the more divine things be of good cheer, if it has such an eye as to seek these things and to see the things invisible to sense, and if, thus seeking, it is able to dwell with the very One sought, according to what is written. For it is written: If you seek, seek, and dwell with me. And one dwells then, when one seeks with faith. For even if it should happen that one does not find, one does not depart from dwelling in the faith of the One sought, but says according to the blessed David: Your knowledge was made wonderful from me; it was made strong; I shall not be able to attain to it; and according to the father of the lunatic: I believe, Lord; help my unbelief. Having this aim, therefore, let us seek with faith concerning the nature of the Holy Spirit, having sought from the very One who is sought 29.769 knowledge. For it is itself that which is sought, and itself that which provides the knowledge concerning itself. As we have also learned from it through the divine Scriptures, it is that which made the saints, and provides divine life to those who ask God from it. And it is necessary that it be more honorable than those who receive; for they become holy when it comes upon them, and are corrupted when it leaves them. But it is forever, being a fount of eternal life. And what is the manner of its provision, of its being both in all things and in each individual, let the mind consider, having become worthy of considering, freed from deceit and heresy and from the women who bewitch others. Let it approach in a quiet state. And let not only the surrounding body be quiet, and the turbulence of the body, but also everything that surrounds: heaven, earth, sea, and the rational beings in them. And let it conceive of all things being filled, and from all sides the Spirit standing in them, as if flowing and poured in, and entering from all sides, and shining in. For the Spirit of the Lord has filled the world, and that which holds all things together has knowledge of God. And it shines in all who are worthy. For just as the rays of the sun, having illuminated a cloud, make it shine, producing a golden appearance; so also the Holy Spirit, coming upon a human body, gave life, gave immortality, gave sanctification, and raised up what was lying down. And that which was moved with an eternal motion by the Holy Spirit became a holy living being. And man, when the Spirit came to dwell in him, received the dignity of a prophet, an apostle, an angel of God, though before this he was earth and ashes. And the power of the Spirit would become more manifest and clearer
