of his wife, fearing lest the Arians might somehow seize him and make him a cleric; for often, flattering him to be persuaded to their heresy, they promised greater advancements, if necessary, even to make him a bishop—but he said that for this reason he had joined himself to a second wife, so that he might escape their ordinations. 6. But I will return to the narrative of the affair concerning the patriarch and I will make the story of Joseph himself clear in detail for those wishing to read it, through the words spoken to me by that man. And indeed, as he related, when the patriarch was deemed worthy of the bath, peeking inside through the cracks 1.341 in the doors, he says, I observed the things being done by the bishop to the patriarch, and I took it to mind and stored it away within myself. For indeed the patriarch himself, having a very considerable weight of gold at hand, stretching out his hand, he says, he gave it to the bishop, saying that “Offer this on my behalf. For it is written that through the priests of God things are bound and loosed on earth, and that these things will be loosed and bound in heaven.” So when these things were done, he says, and the doors were opened, the patriarch was asked by those visiting him how he was after the remedy, and he confessed that he was very well; for he knew what he was saying. Then after two or three days in number, with the bishop visiting him often under the pretense of being a doctor, the patriarch fell asleep with a good end, entrusting his own son, who was very young, to both Joseph and to another most respectable man *. All things therefore were done through these two, because the patriarch, being still a child, was an infant and was being raised in their hands. At this time, since the mind of Joseph was often troubled by the secret things that had happened in the affair of the bath, he considered what he should do. And there was there a certain sealed room of the treasury; and *gaza* is interpreted as treasure in Hebrew. While many people were thinking many things about this treasury because of the seal, Joseph, secretly daring, opened it and found no money, but books worth more than money. Reading in these, as I have already said, he found the Gospel according to John, translated from the Greek into the Hebrew language, and the Acts of the Apostles; and not only that, but also the Gospel according to Matthew, being Hebrew by nature, having read from these, his mind was again worn down, being distressed in some way about the faith of Christ; being pricked now by two things, the reading of the books and the patriarch's initiation, nevertheless his heart was hardened, as happens. 7. While he was occupied with these things, the boy left behind by Hillel, being raised for the patriarchate, grew up; for no one else 1.342 seizes the offices among the Jews, but a son succeeds a father. So when the young man came to the prime of his age, certain idle peers accustomed to evils attached themselves to him; perhaps, I think, he was called Judas, but I do not know for certain because of the time that has passed. So his young contemporaries led him into many evil practices, both the ruin of women and unholy lusts, trying to help him in matters of licentiousness with certain magical charms *, performing certain love-charms and by incantations compelling free women to be brought by force to be ruined by him. But Joseph and the elder with him, being compelled to follow the boy, bore it heavily, and often they brought charges against him in words and admonished him. But he was more persuaded by the young men, hiding his shameful acts and denying them; for Joseph and his companions did not dare to speak out the things concerning him in plain speech, but they admonished as if through knowledge. At any rate, they arrive at Gadara at the hot waters. and a festival is held there every year; for they go away
