a city without walls, and by the noises from afar, you are accustomed to be shaken by the levers of cowardice.

1.22 (κβ΄) Not all who are prudent in things according to reason are also so in things according to thought; but as many as are so in things according to thought, these will also be found externally to be so in things according to sense-perception. For even if sense-perception holds all men as its tributaries, yet they do not all pay tribute to it in the same way. (15∆_328> For out of simplicity, the majority do not know how to honor it in its own domain, while it deceives.

1.23 (κγ΄) Prudence, being by nature indivisible, is cut into different sections. For to one is given a greater, and to another a lesser part of it; until practical virtue, having grown and having the general virtues as its companions, will fulfill for each the good that is possible. 1408 For the majority have obtained their portion of prudence in accordance with their lack of the life of action.

1.24 (κδ΄) In things according to nature, few will be found prudent; but in things contrary to nature, many. For through fear concerning these things, having emptied out all their natural prudence, they have little prudence in that area; but the greater part in things that are superfluous, and not praiseworthy by nature.

1.25 (κε΄) Of reasonable silence, timeliness and measure are table-companions; and truth becomes its banquet; according to which the father of lies, coming to a departing soul, finds nothing of what he seeks.

1.26 (κστ΄) A truly merciful person is not one who willingly gives from his surplus, but one who yields his necessities to those who seize them.

1.27 (κζ΄) Some through material wealth acquire immaterial wealth by the laws of almsgiving; while others through immaterial wealth acquire the material, having come into a perception of the inexhaustible.

1.28 (κη΄) To be rich in good things is dear to everyone; but it is grievous for one who has become divinely rich not to be permitted to rejoice in it for a very long time.

(15∆_330> 1.29 (κθ΄) Externally, there appears to be health of the soul; but internally, its sickness is naturally hidden in the depth of sense-perception. And if it is absolutely necessary for the former to come about externally by the reaping of reproofs, and the latter internally by the renewal of the mind; foolish is the one who casts off reproofs, and is not ashamed to lie always in the hospital of insensibility.

1.30 (λ΄) Do not be harsh against the one who has unintentionally performed surgery on you; but looking at the unpleasantness that has been emptied out, count yourself wretched; and bless God, the one who became for you the cause of this dispensation.

1.31 (λα΄) Do not be displeased at the severity of your sickness; but through the more effective medicines of diligence, become far from it, you who care for the health of your soul.

1.32 (λβ΄) Do not shrink from the one who strikes you at the right moment; but go to him, and he will show you how much evil is corroding your sense-perception, and you will eat the sweet relish of health, after the refuse from the bitterness has been consumed.

1.33 (λγ΄) Insofar as you are aware of the pains, to that extent accept the one who points them out to you through reproofs. For he becomes for you the cause of perfect purification; without which the mind cannot be in the pure region of prayer.

1409 1.34 (λδ΄) When being reproved, one must either be silent, or answer gently to the one who is accusing; not for the one being reproved to defend his own case; but in order to raise up, perhaps, the one who is reproving in ignorance and has stumbled.

1.35 (λε΄) He who is well-disposed to the one who has unjustly grieved him, before being summoned by him, has lost nothing of what is fitting. But he who does so after the (15∆_332> summons, half of the abundance. But he gains the whole of what was paid in advance, who never through grief

Εἰ γάρ καί πάντας ὑποφόρους ἔχει ἡ αἴσθησις, ἀλλ᾿ οὐχ ὁμοίους αὐτῇ τούς φόρους ἀποδιδόασιν. (15∆_328> Ἐξ ἀφελότητος γάρ οἱ πλείους εἰς τά κατ᾿ αὐτήν τιμᾷν αὐτήν ὡς αὐτή ἀπατεῖ οὐκ ἐπίστανται.

1.23 (κγ΄) Τῇ φύσει ἄτμητος οὖσα ἡ φρόνησις, τέμνεται εἰς διαφόρους τομάς. ᾯ μέν γάρ δίδοται πλέον, ᾧ δέ ἔλαττον μέρος αὐτῆς· ἕως αὐξηθεῖσα ἡ πρακτική ἀρετή, συνδρόμους τε αὐτῇ τάς γενικάς (ἔχουσα) ἀρετάς, τό ἐνδεχόμενον ἑκάστῃ ἀποπληρώσει καλόν. 1408 Οἱ πλείους γάρ κατά τήν ἔλλειψιν τῆς ἐμπράκτου ζωῆς, καί τό φρονεῖν ἐκληρώσαντο.

1.24 (κδ΄) Εἰς μέν τά κατά φύσιν, ὀλίγοι φρόνιμοι εὑρεθήσονται· εἰς δέ τά παρά φύσιν, πολλοί. ∆έει γάρ τῷ περί αὐτά ὅλην αὐτῶν τήν φυσικήν φρόνησιν ἐκκενώσαντες, ἔχουσιν ἐκεῖ μέν τό φρονεῖν ὀλίγον· τό πλεῖστον δέ ἐν τοῖς περιττοῖς, καί οὐ τῇ φύσει ἐπαινετοῖς.

1.25 (κε΄) Τῆς εὐλόγου σιωπῆς, ὁ καιρός καί τό μέτρον συνεστιάτορες· πανδαισία δέ τούτου γίνεται ἡ ἀλήθεια· καθ᾿ ἥν ὁ τοῦ ψεύδους πατήρ ἐπί ψυχήν ἀποδημοῦσαν ἐρχόμενος, εὑρίσκει ἐπιζητουμένων οὐδέν.

1.26 (κστ΄) Ἐλεήμων ἀληθής, οὐχ ὁ παρέχων ἑκουσίως τά περιττά, ἀλλ᾿ ὁ συγχωρῶν τά ἀναγκαῖα τοῖς ἀφαρπάζουσιν.

1.27 (κζ΄) Οἱ μέν τῷ ἔνυλῳ πλούτῳ κτῶνται τόν ἄϋλον ἐλεημοσύνης θεσμοῖς· οἱ δέ ἀΰλῳ ἀποκτῶνται τόν ἔνυλον, ἐν αἰσθήσει τοῦ ἀνεκλείπτου γενόμενοι.

1.28 (κη΄) Φίλον μέν παντί, τό πλουτεῖν ἐν καλοῖς· λυπηρόν δέ, τῷ θείως πλουτήσαντι μέν, μή ἐπί πλεῖστον συγχωρηθῆναι δέ ἐνευφρανθῆναι αὐτῷ.

(15∆_330> 1.29 (κθ΄) Ἔξωθεν μέν, ἡ ὑγεία δοκεῖ τῆς ψυχῆς· ἔνδοθεν δέ, ἐν τῷ τῆς αἰσθήσεως πυθμένι πέφυκε κρύπτεσθαι ἡ ἀῤῥωστία αὐτῆς. Εἰ δέ δεῖ πάντως ἔξωθεν μέν ἐκείνην τῷ ἀναθερισμῷ τῶν ἐλέγχων γενέσθαι, ἔνδοθεν δέ ταύτην τῷ ἀνακαινισμῷ τοῦ νοός· ἄφρων ὁ τούς ἐλέγχους ἀποσειόμενος, καί ἐν τῷ τῆς ἀναλγησίας πάντοτε ἀνακεῖσθαι νοσοκομείῳ μή αἰσχυνόμενος.

1.30 (λ΄) Μή τραχυνθῆς κατά τοῦ ἀκουσίως σε χειρουργήσαντος· ἀλλά πρός τήν κενωθεῖσαν ἀηδίαν ἀποβλεψάμενος, ταλάνισον μέν ἑαυτόν· μακάρισον δέ, τόν αἴτιόν σοι ταύτης γενόμενον οἰκονομίας Θεόν.

1.31 (λα΄) Μή πρός τό δεινόν ἀπευδοκήσῃς τῆς ἀῤῥωστίας σου· ἀλλά διά τῶν τῆς φιλοπονίας δραστικωτέρων φαρμάκων, πόῤῥω γενοῦ ταύτης, ὁ τῆς κατά ψυχήν ὑγείας ἐπιμελούμενος.

1.32 (λβ΄) Μή συσταλῇς ἀπό τοῦ καιρίως σε πλήττοντος· πρόσει δέ τούτῳ, καί ὑποδείξει σοι, ὅσον τό ὑποσμῆχον τήν αἴσθησίν σου κακόν, καί φάγῃ ὄψον ἡδύ τό ἐκ τῆς ὑγείας, μετά τό ἀναλωθῆναι τό ἐκ τῆς πικρίας ἀπόβλητον.

1.33 (λγ΄) Ὅσον αἰσθάνῃ τῶν πόνων, τοσοῦτον ἀποδέχου τόν τούτους διά τῶν ἐλέγχων ὑποδεικνῦντά σοι. Καθάρσεως γάρ τελείας αἴτιός σοι καθίσταται· ἧς ἄνευ ἐν καθαρῷ χωρίῳ τῆς εὐχῆς οὐ δύναται γενέσθαι ὁ νοῦς.

1409 1.34 (λδ΄) Ἐν τῷ ἐλέγχεσθαι, ἤ σιωπᾷν δεῖ, ἤ ἡπίως ἀπολογεῖσθαι τῷ καταλέγοντι· οὐ διά τό συστῆσαι τά οἰκεῖα τόν ἐλεγχόμενον· διά δέ τό ἀναστῆσαι προσκόψαντα ἴσως, τόν ἐν ἀγνοίᾳ ἐλέγχοντα.

1.35 (λε΄) Ὁ τῷ λυπήσαντι ἀδίκως πρό τοῦ προσκληθῆναι ὑπ᾿ αὐτοῦ εὐνοῶν, ἐζημίωται τῶν ἀνηκόντων οὐδέν. Ὁ δέ μετά τήν (15∆_332> πρόσκλησιν, τῆς εὐφορίας τό ἥμισυ. Κερδαίνει δέ ὅλον τό προκαταβληθέν, ὁ μήποτε διά λύπην
