and the magi were warned in a dream, as the Gospels declare, but Simeon, being warned by the Spirit through visions, received the Lord into his arms; Anna again, the daughter of Phanuel, giving thanks to the Lord concerning him; and prophesying, such as Agabus and the daughters of Philip; and the women at the passion of the Lord saw visions of angels, and the disciples likewise. 5.150 And what must be said about the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, but also upon Cornelius and upon all the faithful, of whom the Apostle writes: "For to one is given a word of wisdom, to another prophecy, to another kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues, to another gifts of healing, to another a word of knowledge, to another faith, to another workings of powers, to another the discernment of spirits, but all these things," he said, "the one and the same Spirit divides to each one individually as he wills." Glory to God who foretold these things through all the prophets, unto the ages. Amen. 5.151 This is Obadiah the fifth, he says, and he too was deemed worthy to speak beforehand about the mystery according to Christ, thus: "For the day of the Lord is near upon all the nations." It is said readily about the Scythians, that is, of Gog and Magog, but it applies more properly to the Lord Christ; for he adds after a little: "But in Mount Zion there will be salvation." Marginal note: And this one again proclaims clearly that the saving day of the Lord is near in Zion, and upon all the nations. Glory to God unto the ages. Amen. 5.152 This is Jonah the sixth, who not through words, but by deed and type foretold the resurrection of Christ; for the Lord says: "Just as Jonah remained in the belly of the sea monster for three days and three nights, so also will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights." For just as the sea monster vomited out Jonah uncorrupted, so also the tomb vomited out the Lord Christ into a better life. Marginal note: And this one, as in a type through deeds, foretold the tomb and the paradoxical resurrection and incorruptibility of our Lord Christ, through whom also the resurrection and the summing up of all humanity is administered. Glory to God who does these things. Amen. 5.153 This is Nahum the seventh, and he too was deemed worthy to speak beforehand about the resurrection of the Lord Christ, and he says: "Celebrate, Judah, your feasts, pay to the Lord your vows, for they shall no more pass through you into oldness; it is finished, it is taken away; he has gone up breathing into your face, delivering you from affliction." Marginal note: How this one also consistently urges us to rejoice about the resurrection according to Christ and our own, signifying our state of not growing old, that is, incorruptibility and immortality. Glory to God. Amen. 5.154 This is Habakkuk the eighth, and he too was deemed worthy to speak about the resurrection of Christ, thus: "Behold, you scoffers, and look, and wonder, and perish, for I am doing a work in your days, which you will not believe, if someone should declare it." Paul aptly took this passage to refer to the resurrection of the Lord Christ in Antioch of Pisidia. Marginal note: Likewise this one also professes to signify things paradoxical and unbelievable to men, especially to the scoffers, namely concerning resurrection. Glory to God. Amen. 5.155 This is Zephaniah the ninth, and he too was deemed worthy to prophesy about the Lord Christ, and he says thus: "The Lord will appear against them and will destroy all the gods of the nations of the earth, and they will worship him, each from his own place, all the islands of the nations." Again he says: "For I will restore to the peoples a language for its generation, so that all may call upon the name of the Lord, to serve him under one yoke; from the ends of the rivers of Ethiopia they will bring sacrifices to me." And again he says: "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion, be glad and be delighted, O daughter of Jerusalem; the Lord has taken away your iniquities, you have been redeemed from the hand of your enemies; the king of Israel, the Lord, is in
