of life, and this is the one who said 'I am who I am', rightly also the torrent of your delight coming from the fount of life you will give to drink to those who have been made drunk from the fatness of your house. But the Savior is the fount of life by not having it from without but by providing it to all living beings, not only to men but also to those who have ascended to the same divine life, for which reason he is also called the fount of wisdom; and the torrent of delight is the Holy Spirit by the delighting of those who have drunk from him, receiving his various gifts. 351 Ps 35,10b In your light we shall see light; the light of God is the true light, the Radiance of the eternal light. In this light, then, we shall see light, you the eternal light about whom it is said, 'God is light'. You will compare to this, 'He who has seen me has seen the Father'. 352 Ps 35,12 The divine word knows how to use so-called metaphors, just as here, pride not being an animal with feet but a state, he has named 'foot', and in Proverbs 'for the feet of folly lead down'; what he prays for, then, is this: may pride not find a place to come upon my soul so as to deceive me, nor may the hand, that is the deed, of a sinner shake me; for if I should do the things of sinners, I will be shaken from virtue. 353 Ps 35,13a 'There' can signify the future life, as in 'There will be weeping', and 'There the weary in body rested', and 'Naked shall I depart there', and if there is anything of the sort. He says then that 'There', that is, in the future life, 'all who work iniquity have fallen'. For even if here they seemed to stand and to work the things of iniquity, yet there they fell, no longer being permitted to be active as they were active before. But one must not be surprised if he speaks of the future as if it has already happened; for many such things could be said, as 'They have pierced my hands and my feet', and 'They have divided my garments'; for since he who foresees prophetically the things that will be sees them as things that will certainly happen, for this reason he defines them as things that have already happened.
354 Ps 35,13b But 'they were thrust out', that is, outside the state in which they were to be
they were forced, or they have become outside of self-action; because they are no longer able to stand, their practical faculties having been actively hindered but not destroyed. 355 Ps 36,3 This goodness will cause you to dwell upon the holy land, so as to be shepherded upon its wealth; for you will have the true shepherd leading you to a divine pasture, which has been named the wealth of that land. But the other things are similar to what is before it. 356 Ps 36,4 The Lord, providing himself as beneficial to us in all things, is found to be both food and drink for us. When, therefore, we feed on him who is the bread of life and are filled with his flesh and blood, being true food and drink, having delighted in him, we shall have him granting all the requests of the heart, that is, of the mind, not the sensible things but the spiritual and intelligible ones. 357 Ps 36,4-7a Delight in the Lord, and having obtained the aforesaid things, make manifest your own way which you practically travel. But when do you do these things? Whenever you are at work on those things which God oversees. For he who sins hides from God, hastening to cover his way. But making your way manifest to God, 'Hope in him, and he himself will do' the things hoped for by you and expected by you, so as to bring forth your righteousness worked in secret 'as light', as that of Job and Joseph. For their righteousness, having shone forth like a light in the whole world, was spread through all generations, but 'Also your judgment'. That is, what he himself judged concerning you, or what you judged and tested in yourself, he will bring forth likewise at noonday, which has a vigorous and pure light. For thus, when all things concerning you have been made manifest, you will become as a luminary in the world. For the time being, now, 'Be subject to the Lord'. But how will this come to be? By keeping the divine commandments, by supplicating him, of the things done before
