from all sides those who wished to bathe for some days, supposedly for the sake of getting rid of illnesses, which is a diabolical stratagem. For where the miracles from God have occurred, the adversary was beforehand in setting his destructive nets. For men and women bathe there together. And by chance a certain free woman happened to be in the bath, excelling in the beauty of her form. And the younger man, bewitched by the custom of his own licentiousness, passing through the air, rubbed his side against the side of the woman. But she sealed herself in the name of Christ, since she was a Christian; for whom it was not necessary to transgress the law and bathe with men. But these things happen to the simple and unlearned people on account of the negligence of their teachers who do not secure them through teaching. 1.343 Nevertheless, so that God might show his wonders, the young man failed in his attempt, I mean the patriarch. For he sent messages to the woman and offered gifts; but she, having insulted those who were sent, was not bent by the futile effort of the licentious one. 8. Thence his collaborators, knowing the boy's suffering, which he suffered over the woman, attempt to prepare some greater sorcery for him, as Joseph himself explained to me in detail. For they lead the wretched boy after sunset to the nearer tombs; these are burial places, so called in that country, caves hewn out in rocks. There, the magicians with him, having taken the aforementioned boy, performed certain incantations and perjuries and practices full of impiety upon him and in the name of the aforementioned woman. But by the will of God these things came to the mind of the other elder who was with Joseph; and he, perceiving what was happening, communicates it to Joseph. And first, bewailing himself, he said, “Wretched are we,” he says, “brother, and vessels of destruction, whom do we serve?” But Joseph, having asked the reason, did not hear it from him in words before the elder, taking him by the hand, led Joseph away to where the corrupting ones were holding their gathering with the younger man in the tombs for the sake of sorcery. And standing outside the door, they listened to what was being done by them, and when they came out, they withdrew. For it was not yet late evening, but about the time of sunset itself, when the eye could still see dimly. Therefore, after the departure of the most impious ones from the tomb, Joseph and his companions entered and find certain † paraphernalia and other certain paraphernalia of magic thrown on the ground, upon which, having poured urine and heaped up dust, as he said, they departed. And they recognized the plot, for which woman these evil things were being done by them, 1.344 and they watched to see if they would prevail. When therefore the magicians did not prevail—for the woman was helped by the seal of Christ and faith—they learned that the younger man had persevered for three nights for the arrival of the woman, and later had fought with those who performed the magic, because he did not succeed. This became a third act of instruction for Joseph, that the power of sorcery did not prevail where the name of Christ and the seal of the cross were. Nevertheless, he was not yet persuaded to become a Christian. 9. Then the Lord appears to him in his sleep, saying, “I am Jesus, whom your parents crucified, but believe in me.” But he, not even thus persuaded, fell into a great sickness and was given up for lost. And the Lord appears to him again, telling him to believe and he would be healed; but he, having promised, recovered and again remained in his stiff-neckedness. But he falls into a second sickness again and was likewise given up for lost. And being supposed to be dying by his Jewish relatives, he heard from them what is always done mysteriously among them.
